This is one of the best series ever. Basically a police procedural, the series is superbly plotted, written, acted, and directed. The regular actors project their characters beautifully, and the viewer really comes to care about them. The plots are riveting, with superb guest stars more than holding their own.
The series takes place in Cornwall, with beautiful scenery, but the situations are not romanticised, and the tough economics of the region come through. I cannot recommend this series strongly enough.

there was a negative review written by someone who expected this to be masterpiece theater. but it isn't masterpiece theater - it is a british mystery series and i have really enjoyed it. the main character is very low key; very contemplative. but i like that - he is not like every other inspector. if you like the other mystery series: lynley, lewis, et. al. then i think you will want to add this one to your collection. i've also begun reading the books from which the series was taken.

If you love murder mysteries without gore and violence and like a peek into the gentle pace and scenic beauty of rural coastal England, this is a great series.
This series takes you from grand manor houses to farmhouses and everything in between with a great cast of characters. Amazon has been a great source for me for a tremendous variety of interesting subjects.

This show is a great show in that it really has a detective that is probably like most homicide detectives in rural areas. Calm and collected. THe beautiful cornish scenery really helps alot too. This series ran for five series and this one is better than the first story wise. The first series was good but this one improved in every aspect as the cast and writers honed in their skills. THe third series is even better with tighter stories than this one though! Jack Shapard plays it straight and calm and the supporting cast shines here too. The picture like all of the british 90's tv shows has some film grain. They started using film instead of videotape only in the 80's generally so this is fact of filmstock. There are no extra features really , just like most of these brit series. However more and more great brit shows are coming out on dvd and the 90's was a great time for brit tv! So take a trip back to 1995 and see a top rated uk tv detective show. Just don't expect the more gritty type of show of todays uk scene.

Love the show but no subtitles,

I don't understand why most of the programs from the UK come without English subtitles. I cannot buy them without the subtitles which I regret because I like the English mysteries much more than any from the US

I am a lover of the British mystery, from Rumpole to Poirot, from Dalziel and Pascoe to George Gently. I bought this series as a gold box offer. I found it weak. Wycliffe is not a character that makes me want to see more. He's like most people: ordinary. The female cop is not terribly likeable. It is actually one of the other men that I enjoy watching the most. I don't know their names. I didn't find the mysteries particularly intriguing or the solutions particularly satisfying. I'd rather watch this than much of what is found on television in the U.S., but not enough to buy any more of them. I give it a C or 2 and 1/2 stars. For really first rate British mysteries, see the aforementioned mysteries or Foyle's War, Blue Murder, Hamish MacBeth, Heat of the Sun, Inspector Morse, Inspector Lewis, A Touch of Frost, Lord Peter Wimsey, Second Sight, all of which receive As. Midsommer Mysteries, Wire in the Blood, Campion, Wallander, New Tricks and Waking the Dead are also all better than this series.

If you love Masterpiece Theatre and your looking for something similiar- DO NOT BUY WYCIFF. In comparison I find it to be a cheezy "british mystery" series with subtle moments of political correctness.
