Editorial Reviews

The wild, craggy Cornish coast seems ideal for hiding serious crimes, but forthright and observant Detective Superintendent Wycliffe (Jack Shepherd - The Golden Compass) leads an investigative team charged with solving each baffling case. Immigration and insurance swindlers, kidnappers, treasure seekers, suspicious suicides and murderous doctors are some of the cunning criminals they pursue in the intriguing mysteries of this gripping, British police drama.

Storylines are very good.

Wycliffe's family is introduced and the stories seem darker and more complex, reflecting real issues in English society.

The Wycliffe series had a good cast, it is entertaining. The production quality is quite high. I hope they continue to release all the series - I believe there are 5 series, and also the pilot movie, and the special. If you like British (specifically Cornwall) mysteries, these are great. They are slightly dated by some of the technology but not too bad. My only gripe is that it doesn't have captioning - sometimes the British slang needs to be interpreted, but I have trouble figuring out exactly what they did say.

The episodes in Series Three are: Dead on Arrival, Number of the Beast, Slave of Duty, Total Loss, Crazy for You, Faith, Last Judgement, and Old Habits.

We have thoroughly enjoyed each season of Wycliffe, and think they may be getting better as they go along. The plotting is very good, and as much as I love the W J Burley books from which these characters were taken, I think the television series improved a bit when they were not trying to fit an entire mystery novel into the space of one hour. All the main characters--including Cornwall (!)--are wonderful and we like the quiet, no nonsense dignity of this team, that still manages to have some humor at times. Subtitles would be great, but since they are not there, we have not actually missed them all that much. (We always use them when available, but the show is 5 stars anyway. We have not missed the dialog when we turn up the sound.)

Without a doubt this 90's detective show just kept getting better each series. This, the third had even better stories than the first two. And the other reviewer noticed this too. Seriously this shows first season was good , the next better but this one did it perfectly. ONE reviewer said the technology is dated! Ah, this is a show in 1996 using 1996 technology. I shudder to think what they think when watching a movie from lets say the 50's.! And the pace was a little faster it seemed than lets say the first series. However this is still a show in which Wycliffe and his detectives solve murders each episode. And there are some dousies in this one and sometimes the evil murderer may even get away with it. Jack Shepard makes wycliffe the calmest detective around and yet he's a driven man. He's more like most real homicide detective than many film depictions depict. He goes to work and does his job and is totally professional about it. The show is helped along by the beautiful south western English scenery. A place of many cliffs and seashores and craggy flat windswept plains. The acting is solid throughout with the two other leads really fitting into their roles by this series. Sadly they only made five series of this one but at least they are all out on dvd. The show is realistic in many regards and I hope I get to see all five series.

I ordered this set twice and had problems both times. Whoever attempted to match the audio and video had to be deaf because the sound doesn't match the actors' lip movements. They seem to conserve lip movements in Wycliffe videos which makes watching the series a bit difficult for us non-Brits, but to have a delay makes watching the series painful. If it was a one-off problem, I could be more understanding. The fact that two sets were defective means there is something seriously wrong in their quality control.

I'd forgotten about this series, used to watch it in England and enjoyed it, so it was great to see it's now on dvd. Loved seeing the gorgeous Cornish countryside and coast. Storylines are very good. Jack Shepard great actor. Very enjoyable series.
