5.0 out of 5 stars Wynonna Spreads Her Wings and Flies, December 13, 2004
This review is from: Wynonna (Audio CD)
I bought this CD about 10 years ago and it's grown on me. I listen to the nuances and inflections in Wynonna's voice and I think she is one of the best country vocalists around today. I'll review each song individually since they are all that special.

1. What It Takes- Wynonna sounds grounded and confident singing about maintaining personal happiness and peace of mind. She sounds wise and determined.

2. She Is His Only Need- A very endearing and moving song about what a man will do for love. Wynonna's a wonderful storyteller and she delivers the song with sensitivity and displays that country soul in her voice.

3. I Saw The Light- I like Wynonna's interpretation of this song because she sounds surprisingly upbeat, spunky and mischievious in her response to a cheating boyfriend. I got the impression Wynonna's take on this song is about a woman who keeps her dignity intact and remains true to who she is after her man has failed her.

4. My Strongest Weakness- This displays Wynonna's tender side. Here is a woman who is asking God to help her heal her broken heart after her beloved betrayed and walked out on her.

5. When I Reach The Place I'm Goin'- Here momma Naomi teams up with Wynonna to sing a great song. The song has a lot of spiritual connotations attached to it. It can be interpreted many ways because it implies somebody finding meaning in their Earthly journey or it could be seen as a gospelish ballad.

6. No One Else On Earth- I really love this song because it is Wynonna at her rousing best. You can hear all the passion, letting her guard down and sexual tension in this song.

7. It's Never Easy To Say Goodbye- It's hard not to get choked up when listening to this song about letting go of the ones you love. I like how she compared saying goodbye to a person to the death of someone dear in your heart. This shows Wynonna and her songwriter's breadth of emotion.

8. A Little Bit Of Love Goes A Long, Long Way- This is the only song I would say is out of place. Wynonna's soulful and rich voice doesn't always match up with the sometimes lighthearted and whimsical lyrics to this song. She still gave it her best though.

9. All Of That Love From Here- I thought this was a real sweet song providing great images of the South, but it sounds a bit unrealistic for the South in the 1990's. Unless Wynonna's singing about another era in time. It's just that the visuals of the old man in the cotton field putting the girl's belongings in her trunk sounds like something of yesteryear. When I hear of Southern cottonfields I can't help but associate with poor black people and at first the song rubbed me the wrong way because I thought the song was implying that those were the good ole days. Based on what I've seen about Wynonna, she looks like an open minded person and didn't think this was some kind of underhanded prejudiced comment.

10. Live With Jesus- This song is interesting because it is so short, but expressive in its 2:18 minutes running. The song's subject is obvious based on the title. It is about a woman knowing she'll be with Jesus in the end after all the trials and tribulations. It is gospel, country, rock and blues all in one.

In short, that is how diverse and interesting Wynonna's voice is. She is very underrated in country music because she does her own thing and because she doesn't lose weight to stay on top. I think country music needs Wynonna right now in the sea of pop country dollies with limited talents as vocalists.

I absolutely love this album. In my oppinion, it's Wynonna's best. My faves are "She Is His Only Need" (beautiful song), "A Lil Bit O' Love" (good kick a** song), and "I Saw The Light" (cool lyrics). Wynonna at the top of her game.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wynonna soars!, August 21, 2006

Wynonna's first album as a solo artist, and she doesnt disapoint! This is the album that proved she is one of the best vocalists of our time( and it has been proven over and over again). Though this is her first solo album, Naomi Judd has a cameo on When I reach The place im going, and also wrote the song My Strongest Weakness.

3 singles from this cd went to number one. She is His only Need, I saw the light, No One else On earth and another peaked at #4 My Strongest weakness.

One of my personal favorite songs is All that Love from Here.
It isnt about poor black people in the south, or an old man. Its just about Wynonna looking back at her life before she became famous(she lived in kentucky)and when she went solo(I see the tears in my mama's eyes/When she kissed her baby goodbye)(My mama taught me how to stand alone/She let me go but she still holds on) and how she can still feel all the love from back then and now.

My other favorite song is My Strongest Weakness, which was written by her mom Naomi Judd. It really is a beautifull song both vocally and poetically.

I URGE everyone to buy this OUTSTANDING cd!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Classic Wynonna, May 22, 2006

This review is from: Wynonna (Audio CD)
I've long been a fan of the Judds and Wynonna, and remember the day this album came out. Wy felt a lot of pressure releasing her first solo album, but I feel she lived up to it.

I have all the Wy albums, but this is the one I keep reaching for. Her voice is powerful and passionate, and there's a song for nearly every mood, from jamming out to "No One Else on Earth" to a more soulful "Gonna Live with Jesus." If you listen closely, you'll hear Naomi accompany her on "When I Reach the Place I'm Goin'."

I highly recommend this album. You won't be disappointed.

4.0 out of 5 stars What a voice and what beautiful lyrics, July 21, 2004

When I first listened to this album I couldn't believe the beauty and expression of Wynonna's voice and the craftsmanship of her songwriters such as Dave Loggins who penned the ballad of a small town loner who found his counterpart in "She Is His Only Need". It litereally brought me to tears.

"He Was My Strongest Weakness" is another beautiful song with a great melody that talks about some lost love or romance, while "All Of That Love From Here" is a real Country ballad with great Country poetry that really gets to the core, making me want to live my life again and feel all of that love I received or never received!

However, the album gets only 4 stars because not all songs can live up to the beauty of the ones described above. Anyway it's a great buy for an emotional and passionate person (like me *smile*)!

5.0 out of 5 stars This album is amazing and EVERYONE should own it!, April 29, 2011

I truly love this album and consider it a true classic. This is one of those albums that I can listen to (and love/enjoy) all the way thru. Put on any track at any time. Put it in the shuffle. Play it as is. Even play the same track several times in a row. It's great either way! I don't wanna write too big of a review, but I just have to tell EVERYONE here that they have to own this album, especially if they like Country and/or any other Wynonna/Judd albums. A "classic" that is great all around, in every song. Ya gotta get it! Period!

5.0 out of 5 stars Wynonna Has the Chops to Sing Just About Anything, November 27, 2010
This review is from: Wynonna (MP3 Download)
I have many of Wynonna's albums, but this first one I bought (which has been lost) really introduced me to the strength and musicality of her voice. I, too, am a singer and can appreciate how she puts the nuances, tonality and phrasing in her songs to make them sound haunting, joyful, rousing or spiritual. This is an amazing feat for an artist. I listen to Wynonna quite a lot. I love so many of her songs, "Father Sun" is one of my favorites, along with "What It Takes," and "Let's Make a Baby King." She brings me to tears every time I hear "Only Love." What a dynamic voice and presence. She definitely needs to continue being a part of the rather bland country scene. In fact, I don't listen to any country artists except Wynonna because I don't particularly care for the obviousness of some country songs. But Wynonna's different She's unique and truly talented.

5.0 out of 5 stars Powerful and Strong, August 4, 2007
By
Music Lover "Music Lover" (Lafayette, Indiana, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Wynonna (Audio CD)
This is Wynonna's first solo effort and a darn good effort too. Every song on this CD is powerful and strong. Her first single "She Is His Only Need" reached number 1 and became her first big solo hit. I remember the first time I heard her sing it on the awards show and how powerful the song was and how it made her mom cry. The 2nd single "I Saw The Light" became a number 1 song also and was the number 1 song for the year on the year end countdown. This song is very upbeat and will keep your toes tapping. The next single "No One Else On Earth" was her 3rd number 1 from the CD and is more of a rock song than a country song but is still a very good song. The 4th single "My Strongest Weekness" was a top 10 hit and is the weakest song on the CD. Other standouts are "When I Reach The Place I'm Going" a duet with her mother sounds just like a Judd song should sound and could have been a single from the CD. "All Of That Love From Here" a ballad that is very smooth and relaxing to hear also could have been a single. All in all this is a very good CD and not a bad start for Wynonna as she ventures into the music business on her own. I am pleased to have this in my CD collection
