Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Gr 5 Up-A well-written biography that will surely capture students' interest. The easy-to-read text flows like the words of a novel. Gourse first introduces Marsalis as a youngster. Just enough information is shared about his childhood, family life, and community to prepare readers for the great accomplishments of this gifted African-American musician. A winner of many awards in the areas of both jazz and classical music, he has had to face many challenges on his road to success. The author discusses Marsalis's love for the trumpet, his willingness to work hard, and the problems that he confronted in the 1970s and `80s when African-American artists were not given many opportunities to perform classical music. Other greats are mentioned, such as Louis Armstrong and Duke Ellington, whose work had an influence on Marsalis. Small black-and-white photos of average quality appear throughout. The listing of Web sites, videos, and books for further study is impressive. A well-researched title that will enhance any collection.-Linda Zoppa, South Bronx High School, NY
