Editorial Reviews

The Three Mesquiteers was the umbrella title for a series of fifty-one B-westerns released between 1936 and 1943. The films featured the characters Stony Brooke, Tucson Smith and Lullaby Joslin as the threesome, played by many B-western stars of that era. In 1938, John Wayne took over for Robert Livingston as Stony Brooke and starred in eight Mesquiteers films between 1938 and 1939, he was joined by Ray Corrigan as Tucson Smith and Max Terhune as Lullaby Joslin for the first six and Raymond Hatton as Rusty Joslin for the last two. all eight films were directed by George Sherman (Big Jake). John Ford's Stagecoach was perfectly sandwiched between the eight films and John Wayne portrayal of the outlaw gunfighter, The Ringo Kid, made him a superstar and ended Wayne's Stony Brooke run. Livingston was rehired as Brooke and went on to make fourteen more Mesquiteers films and for an incredible total of twenty-nine. In Wyoming Outlaw (the seventh of eight Wayne Mesquiteers films) - Our heroes come to the aid of a modern-day Robin Hood, Will Parker (Donald Barry), who's taking refuge in the mountains of Wyoming. Hotheaded Will, the son of recently fired highway worker Luke Parker (Charles Middleton) is thrown in jail for violating the local game laws. Busting out, Parker scurries to the hills, hotly pursued by the Mesquiteers and the law. Running against time, the threesome try to capture the corrupt politician Balsinger (Leroy Mason) who's responsible for the recession and save Will from the gun-happy policemen and townspeople.

I love The Three Mesquiteers, they are one of the best trigger trios of the b-westerns only licked by the Hopalong Cassidy trios. The Three Mesquiteers are here played by John Wayne, Ray Crash Corrigan and Raymond Hatton. We have good Mesquiteers action, fights, shooting and riding but midway the plot brings the Mesquiteers in the background and Don Barry takes over in the role as the Young criminal who can't get out of the mud because of society and the real bad guys. To have his revenge he goes to his own destruction. In this way the film foresees western noirs with Joel McCrea and films like Lonely are the Brave with Kirk Douglas and Willy Boy with Robert Blake. It is a very interesting twist but I guess the B-Western Police will say that the plot goes too far. The print is super!

For the true dieheart JOHN WAYNE fan..like me.Keep in mind this was a "B"western...which means low budget..but a lot of action. And it had a very good story line.People seem to have forgotten the great actor..Donald"Red"Barry..he was so good as the Outlaw. He was a leading man during those days in a serial classic..."RED RYDER".His acting I felt really stood out.Ray Corrigan..always great to watch.Raymond Hatton...a great character actor. And of course...the great JOHN WAYNE.The music in these "Mesquiteers"have always played a very bug part. It's where music & action work side by side.Like in the serials of the day. This is a very good "B"top notch western to collect.

John Wayne is one actor you will want to watch over and over and I am glad that Randall wants to watch them over so that I can watch some of them too.

Wyoming Outlaw, 1939 film

Cowboys are herding cattle when a dust storm arises. They take shelter in a cabin. One man reads about the effects of the Great War. Range land was converted to wheat land, then the price of wheat dropped and ruined farmers. When they return to herding they find blood from a butchered steer. Can they find the man who did this? They go into town for supplies and food. A bartender tells them about a local strong man, he is also a crack shot. One man hurts a young woman on the dance floor, there is a fight. A wallet is lost in the struggle, it is empty when recovered. Stony Brook meets Smith and Johnson at Irene’s home. Jobs are scarce. One man was fired from his job because he refused to pay graft. There’s no Relief for him.

Young Will Parker meets his friends and they have dinner. Roast beef and cornbread. Mrs. Parker sees Balsinger about a job for her husband (selling jobs?). There is a disagreement. Stony Brook helps her get her money back after a fight. Will Parker is not allowed into the grazing area because he shot game. Rusty talks to him. Can he lasso a deer? He is caught with the goods! Does hunger take precedence over game laws? Stony Brook tells the Governor about the conditions under Balsinger. The Mesquiteers rescue Mrs. Parker, but they are wanted by the Sheriff! Mr. Parker is beaten up. Can Will Parker escape to help him? Yes, but he is pursued by those who are out to get him dead or alive.

Will Parker is cornered, the US Marshal orders out the US Cavalry to get him. The sound of gunshots tells a battle is on. [This pads out the story.] The Three Mesquiteers will try to rescue Will Parker alive. The Sheriff says “no shooting”. Will he be double-crossed?

Early Wayne movie. He wasn't much of an actor, the director wasn't much of a director, and the production values just weren't there, but the basic story line was good, and it was interesting to watch. A lot like most of the TV shows in the early 1950s.

If it wasn't for the historical value, seeing Wayne as a rank beginner, I'd have given it 1 star.

Four stars because John Wayne made it so. B&W cannot compare with color. Story plot is typical western, but John Wayne provides plenty of action and is ably supported by his two partners, Charles Haddon and Ray Cocoran as The Three Mesquiteers. John Wayne ends it with a hot kiss to the girl.
