This was one that slipped under the radar in 2013. Water Liars is Andrew Bryant and songwriter Justin Kinkel-Schuster. They are a band that tours forever hailing from the tiny hamlet of Pittsboro in Calhoun County, Mississippi. The population was 212 at the 2000 census which is a nice intimate figure. It perhaps also accounts for the the concentration on the wide open spaces of Wyoming in this excellent album jammed packed with meandering alt country of the kind which the Low Anthem specialised a couple of years back until things went quiet on that front. If you want to check them out fro free head over to the Chicago based Hear-ya music site and seek out Session 114 which showcases songs from this album.

On the evidence of "Wyoming" a rush of new music from this band would be very welcome if it is as good as the evidence presented herein. The opener "Sucker" sets the bittersweet tone of the album where vocalist-guitarist Justin Kinkel-Schuster intones how "I'm throwing out the old regrets and crawling after glory,". Perhaps a motto for 2014? Whatever the case it followed by the two best songs on the album. First up is the poignant guitar driven "Fake Heat" a haunting tune full of regret and poignancy. Equally good is the more upbeat "Linens" a effortless harmonic country song which should be starting point for the curious. Other mentions in dispatches should go to the powerfully commencing "Backbone" until it slips into a gorgeous ballad; the title track also impresses which is a dark rumination on defeat which leads to the sad reflection that " I will die in Wyoming/in a drug store parking lot/so high I'll believe that I am/parked outside your house/two-thousand miles away".

Great contemplative, haunting album. The lyrics are full of evocative imagery of desolate hearts and lives, punctuated by the dark beauty that can be found in even the most mundane, everyday things. The music is stark, stripped-down alt country that occasionally gives way to blasts of noisy guitar at all the right moments. (There are also tantalizing hints of classic rock 'n' roll [think Buddy Holly, Carl Perkins] beats and melodies that have been slowed down to a dirge-like pace, showing that Water Liars are the latest in a long line of musicians reinterpreting the classic song structures).
I've had this album for two weeks and I have hardly played anything else; and "Wyoming" is still growing on me. It's been a long, long time since anything has caught my attention like this has-- years, at the least.
I was introduced to Water Liars at my local music store by an employee who knows I love Mark Kozelek. He suggested I give "Wyoming" a spin, and 1/3 of the way through the first song I knew I had to buy it. Great suggestion on his part, great decision on my part. I will definitely by buying the other Water Liars album very soon.
As for the rest of that lyric I put in my title: "I will die in Wyoming, in a drugstore parking lot, so high I will believe that I am parked outside your house 2,000 miles away."

2nd release from Mississippi band--epic country/folk heartbreak ballad rock that's not afraid to
get a little weird with occasional explosive finales. The vocal duo of Justin Kinkel-Schuster and
Andrew Bryant deliver poignant, beautiful harmonies that oh-so-gently seep into your soul. The
music, thought mostly tight & traditional, makes sporadic forays to unexpected places. Recalls
bands like Phosphorescent, Centro-matic, Iron and Wine, Drive-By Truckers. A quietly
exceptional album for the genre.

Fat Possum is a great label. They have a knack for tracking down, signing, and recording unique artists like Youth Lagoon and Dax Riggs. Their blues artists are legends.

Based on that knowledge, I listened to their new artists Water Liars...and I'm glad that I did. Their music is excellent. It blends great songwriting with emotion and wit. There are even unexpected moments of hilarity, appearing in Fake Heat. There are moments of that will force you feel something, especially in the songs Backbone and Wyoming.

Wyoming is a great collection of songs. It's always nice to come across new music that is meaningful.

Standout tracks: Backbone, Wyoming, Fake Heat
