Book Description

September 19, 1997
X.400 and X.500: An Introduction is aimed at those with current or planned involvement in the management of X.400, including messaging managers, system or network planners, and software developers. This book provides background knowledge of mailing systems and functionality as well as a grasp of how the underlying network operates. It explains the terminology and concepts of the standards. Because the standards are very abstract, John Rhoton has illustrated them with an overview of MAILbus 400 and Digital X.500, which are thorough and faithful implementations of the standards.

· Overview of MAILbus 400 as explanation of X.400 standards
· Provides introductory material for those switching from Message Router to MAILbus 400

Nice overview of protocols and good descriptions of basic concepts. Not useful for application developers.

5.0 out of 5 stars Explains the foundation of internet email, February 6, 2000
This review is from: X.400 and SMTP: Battle of the E-mail Protocols (Paperback)
My interest in buying this book was to get a better understanding of Internet email systems. X.400 is obsolete if it ever lived at all. What amazed me is how the development of X.400 and SMTP went hand in hand. Or put another way how SMTP and the other mail protocols are modeled on X.400.

This book gave me a greater appreciation for the work that went into designing today's email systems. Anyone who wants to consider themselves an email expert needs to understand the heritage to fully understand why email is the way it is.
