We are a homeschooling family and thus, we use pencil sharpeners pretty heavily around here. Over the years, I have tried out several different types from battery operated to ones with DC adaptors. All have failed with a few weeks or months. It was frustrating to try out different ones only to have to take them back to the different stores (discount store chains and office supply chains). It got to where I thought I would have to install a hand crank version on the wall.

And then I stumbled upon this little beauty. It's sleek and modern design intrigued me. I like it when I can buy something with both form and function.

But beyond that, this sharpener has kept up with the constant demands from #2 pencils to colored pencils for art/coloring. And that alone earns it five stars from me.

Plus, the price is right compared to some of the other more "heavy duty" sharpeners.

To ensure optimal performance, be sure to clean out the sharpener shavings compartment frequently. Thankfully, this is easy to do on this model. Simply open the "trap door" on the bottom and dump out shavings. You may need to use a wooden skewer to make sure you get all of the impacted shavings out that can get stuck at the top. If you do this, your sharpener will continue to work great.

You can't go wrong with this Spira Sharpener. When ours finally gives out, I'm buying another!

Update: Here we are over a year later from our purchase date and the sharpener is still going strong. It's sharpened more color pencils and regular pencils than I could have imagined and kept on going!

This electric pencil sharpener works well and looks cool. It is, however, limited to one pencil size, but thats fine with me. It's a plug in device...no batteries to fool with. All in all I'm very pleased with my new pencil sharpener!

After wearing out a couple of battery-operated pencil sharpeners over the years, I decided to find an electric one. I like this one because it looks more like an art object that a functional sharpener. However, it works just fine. I particularly like the ease of emptying it. Amazon had a wide selection of sharpeners. I have always found the reviews to be helpful in choosing a selection.

After buying the Royal & Langnickel Small Tin Charcoal Drawing Art Set to use to do the exercises in Drawing from Observation: An Introduction to Perceptual Drawing, I bought a manual sharpener for the charcoal pencils in the set. My results with the manual sharpener were half eaten pencils with very little in the way of a point. The manual sharpener wasn't working for me and I needed sharpened charcoal pencils.
So after reading many of the reviews of electric sharpeners here at Amazon, I decided on the red X-ACTO Spira Electric Pencil Sharpener. It seemed to be very popular, had very good reviews and the price was right. None of the reviews, however, mentioned charcoal pencils, but it seemed worth trying this sharpener and I bought one. It turns out that so far it has worked very well on all of the pencils I've sharpened with it. These have included no name No. 2 pencils, Royal & Langnickel charcoal pencils and Derwent Inktense Watersoluble Ink Pencils
The key to getting a good point is paying attention to the so-called "Pencil Saver" technology. To get a good point and not eat up your pencil, you insert the pencil until you feel the helical cutter start grinding the head of the pencil. At that point DO NOT keep pushing on the pencil. Just hold it there.

Item arrived quickly. I like the shape of this sharpener, and it does a good job. Too many of the sharpeners grind the pencil down to nothing and the point breaks off the first time you use it. This one doesn't.

I've had one of these sharpeners on my desk for a while and it works really well. I like the trap-door at the bottom that allows me to hold the sharpener over a garbage can to empty the shavings. I also really like how it looks. Looks like a cool piece of art on my desk - not a pencil sharpener.

We ordered this unit just over a week ago for my 7yr old so it's easier to sharpen her pencils for her homework. The unit came promptly, as Amazon is always great w/ their Prime shipping, and we plugged it in to test. The unit was DOA. You could hear the motor engage, and "click" like it wanted to spin... but it wouldn't spin. We tried multiple outlets, etc, and the same problem.

So we went to Amazon, and as usual their return/replacement system is top notch and they shipped us a new one same day. We got it the next day, local warehouse shipment, and plugged it in. The thing worked like a charm... for 5 pencils. On the 6th pencil the same issue occurred and it made a noise like it wanted to move the motor, but couldn't.

NOTE: Both of these were adult tested, and the pencil was inserted w/ almost no force to determine how much pressure was needed to complete a quick/accurate sharpen so it wasnt "child error" or pushing too hard.

Sending the 2nd one back, and honestly looking at a new product.
