And then I stumbled upon this little beauty. It's sleek and modern design intrigued me. I like it when I can buy something with both form and function.
But beyond that, this sharpener has kept up with the constant demands from #2 pencils to colored pencils for art/coloring. And that alone earns it five stars from me.
Plus, the price is right compared to some of the other more "heavy duty" sharpeners.
To ensure optimal performance, be sure to clean out the sharpener shavings compartment frequently. Thankfully, this is easy to do on this model. Simply open the "trap door" on the bottom and dump out shavings. You may need to use a wooden skewer to make sure you get all of the impacted shavings out that can get stuck at the top. If you do this, your sharpener will continue to work great.
You can't go wrong with this Spira Sharpener. When ours finally gives out, I'm buying another!
Update: Here we are over a year later from our purchase date and the sharpener is still going strong. It's sharpened more color pencils and regular pencils than I could have imagined and kept on going!
So after reading many of the reviews of electric sharpeners here at Amazon, I decided on the red X-ACTO Spira Electric Pencil Sharpener. It seemed to be very popular, had very good reviews and the price was right. None of the reviews, however, mentioned charcoal pencils, but it seemed worth trying this sharpener and I bought one. It turns out that so far it has worked very well on all of the pencils I've sharpened with it. These have included no name No. 2 pencils, Royal & Langnickel charcoal pencils and Derwent Inktense Watersoluble Ink Pencils
The key to getting a good point is paying attention to the so-called "Pencil Saver" technology. To get a good point and not eat up your pencil, you insert the pencil until you feel the helical cutter start grinding the head of the pencil. At that point DO NOT keep pushing on the pencil. Just hold it there.Read more ›
So we went to Amazon, and as usual their return/replacement system is top notch and they shipped us a new one same day. We got it the next day, local warehouse shipment, and plugged it in. The thing worked like a charm... for 5 pencils. On the 6th pencil the same issue occurred and it made a noise like it wanted to move the motor, but couldn't.
NOTE: Both of these were adult tested, and the pencil was inserted w/ almost no force to determine how much pressure was needed to complete a quick/accurate sharpen so it wasnt "child error" or pushing too hard.
Sending the 2nd one back, and honestly looking at a new product.
