4.0 out of 5 stars Xcom, a good game, now a good book
This book fits in nicely with the game. If you were interested and enjoyed the gameplay, this book will also entertain you. It takes you right along as if you were in a mission of the game. It could stand to be more descriptive, and perhaps some more character development. BUT as it stands, it is very entertaining, and I think works well with the Xcom saga.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not much to drool over, but fun like the game.
Thing is, I couldn't imagine how someone would put the game's content into novel form. And after reading the novel, I still can't. This was a really quick read, and it had sort of a superficial bite to it. None of the characters are really worth caring about, and it doesn't go into much detail about the technologies or species of aliens. But none of that really...

This was a really quick read, and it had sort of a superficial bite to it. None of the characters are really worth caring about, and it doesn't go into much detail about the technologies or species of aliens. But none of that really matters much; I don't think anyone was expecting a masterpiece here.

If ya liked the game, you'll probably have fun with the book.

4.0 out of 5 stars X-Com: an exciting and enjoyable read, February 2, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: X-COM: UFO Defense - A Novel (Paperback)
Although I have never played the game, X-Com, I found this book to be very fun and exciting to read, and particularly enjoyed the geographic descriptions of the locales. It felt as though the writers had either spent some time there, or else done their research very well.

It was not all rosy, of course; there could have been a bit more description of some of the aliens and some of the starships; some of it felt as though it relied upon the reader's prior experience with the game. But all in all, the book was exciting, action-packed, and a real page-turner, and kept me guessing right up to the end as to who the traitor really was. I definitely recommend it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Execlent fiction, October 5, 1996
By A Customer
This review is from: X-COM: UFO Defense - A Novel (Paperback)
I have read this book over and over. It's a real page turner. Its based on the best selling PC game, X-com UFO Defence. The book centers around many charactors and even the aliens. It tells how they won the battel on the earth, the skys, and the final battel on Mars. I would reckamend this book to people who like books based around PC games and fiction fan

5.0 out of 5 stars X-COM A BOOK AND POSSIBLE MOVIE, August 26, 2002
By
This review is from: X-COM: UFO Defense - A Novel (Paperback)
I loved X-COM the book and the game, I wish more books were written and I love the game. I would say a movie about X-COM would rake in the dough literally. I wish it were longer and there should have been a sequal but hey I am happy with it anyway. Hope everyone else enjoys it.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Pretty Good Read, March 20, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: X-COM: UFO Defense - A Novel (Paperback)
This is a good book to read if you liked the game or you like sci-fi and alien stories. I reccomend playing the game before reading the book because the book doesn't tell descriptions on the alien species or air\space craft that well. All that aside, it's a great book. It has a lot of geographical truths and is pretty interesting, especially if you liked the game. The plot is set up perfectly and it had me guessing till the end, which was exciting and I couldn't put it down. Over all short but sweet.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect continuation of the X-com saga!, October 15, 1997
By A Customer
This review is from: X-COM: UFO Defense - A Novel (Paperback)
I very much enjoyed this book, I had been waiting for someone to come out with a X-com book, and was pleased when I found this one. The only flaw I can see is that it appears not to have a sequall in production. In short, if you love X-com the game, or sci-fi alien stories, you will enjoy this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book with a lot of good storyline., October 24, 1996
By A Customer
This review is from: X-COM: UFO Defense - A Novel (Paperback)
This is one of the better books I have read. It centers on the building of a new base in Andermatt, Sweden. During the building of the base the aliens find out and the X-Com team has to go into overtime to stop the advancing aliens. All in all this book is great for those who like Sci-Fi. The only problem I can find is that there isn't another one coming.

1.0 out of 5 stars Pretty bad, December 6, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: X-COM: UFO Defense - A Novel (Paperback)
It was a pretty boring book with cardboard characters, non-descript situations and tedious pacing. While the game was pretty good, it had no plot onto which to latch a book.

Remember the nondescript paper doll-like agents you use? The book will give you the same feeling about the characters, only there is no sense of dread in the missions.

2.0 out of 5 stars Thin, November 11, 2002
This review is from: X-COM: UFO Defense - A Novel (Paperback)
Not only is the book itself thin, the plot and the characters are too. How thin? Well let me say that sometimes the game mechanics shine through them. If you are looking for true Sci-Fi, or anything heavier than a McDonalds' Value meal, look elsewhere. Unless you are nostalgic for the video game, or need something to fill out your time in the bathroom then this book may be worth a read. Personally, I recommend finding something meatier.
