5.0 out of 5 stars In the style of "Angry Little Girls," but even better :-) (IMO, anyway), December 15, 2008

This review is from: X Diary (Paperback)
The art is a little bit like "Angry Little Girls" in that both are very simply drawn, yet super cute and effective. The fact that this book is in color and has such a great story and universality to it makes me really appreciate it. It's also written like a diary itself, except in comic form, which makes it really quick, pleasant, and fun to read. It's very funny, and sad at the same time--a given, I suppose, as the two main characters are former lovers trying to do the "Let's be friends, even though it makes us feel womp-womp and super awkward" thing. Impressively, even with all the post-breakup sadness and drama that can automatically come in such situations, Toma does a great job of making it really accessible, humorous, and not too heavy at all. Anyone who has ever laughed, cried, or wanted to tear their hair out because of a relationship should definitely check this book out!

5.0 out of 5 stars Adorable, September 6, 2008
This review is from: X Diary (Paperback)
I absolutley loved this comic. I literally couldn't put it down until I finished the whole book in one sitting. The art was simple, yet quirky and humorous. And a major plus: the whole book was in color! "X Diary" is written like a literal diary, only the entries are illustrated with cute drawings and always end with a zinger. I was laughing outloud while I was reading it. It reminded me of American comic strips, like Calvin and Hobbes.

Many times, I could relate to the main character in the woes and happiness in relationships--the doubts; the longing; the need for independency and self self-approval; and even trying to make your ex/boyfriend jealous. Even though exes and past relationships might be a heavy and dismal subject, the author/artist pulls off the story in a humorous and light-hearted manner through her innocent and endearing characters. A must read for all who have been or will be in a relationship.
