5.0 out of 5 stars eerie sonic textures, February 2, 2000
This review is from: X-Dreams (Audio CD)
i had the pleasure of playing electric & acoustic bass w/ms. peacock back in new york during the early 70's; you know she is the ex of legendary jazz bassist gary peacock and legendary jazz pianist paul bley, don't you? we even did an album for french polydor, called "Blood" that's awesome-if anyone finds it please write me-i'm on it(under my old name of youngstein)but never got a copy! this music is annette at her spacey best-she was a forerunner of many of the rock/jazz/fusion avante you've heard since the 80's-she's still ahead of her time. musically this is dense material and lyrically it's obtuse enough to spark an inner journey for meaning on several levels. She does have other albums out, recorded in her adopted home of England but they are hard to find. she also pops up on a fairly recent album by myra melford that features her ex, gary p. on acoustic bass; her vocal is impeccable. once you've heard annette's ethereal voice, you'll probably want to experience it again; it defies categorizing - which is a good thing! listen for yourself - take a risk and go beyond your comfort zone! you won't regret it!

4.0 out of 5 stars Annette Peacock will grow on you..very different...very good, October 19, 1999

This review is from: X-Dreams (Audio CD)
X-Dreams is Annette Peacock's best-known album & certainly one of her best. She mixes rock, jazz, avant-garde and blues into an unsettling but ultimately rewarding blend of music. Great lyrics..mysterious..artistic. Buy this album! If you like it, she has more CDs available..all worthwhile...

5.0 out of 5 stars you wanna own this, June 18, 2008
This review is from: X-Dreams (Audio CD)
The concept of a women reciting her poetry, backed by a small division of progressive rock musicans may sound a little dated, but here, it sounds fresh as a daisy.

Annette Peacock is a poet and a great singer. At times on this album, she will read her work in a very matter-of-fact way, then raise her fine alto voice like a trumpet. Her singing is always clean and powerful and never pretentious.

Her band is composed of art-rock and jazz session pros. But the music is straight-forward, so not to distract from the lyrics, and at times rocks at full tilt. The playing is sharp and lean. You really have to love it when these types of guys play more stripped down music. They can add a lot of spices lesser musicians can't.

All around great music. I would reccomended this to anyone who likes any kind of music beyond radio playlists.

5.0 out of 5 stars An outstanding effort from a very underrated and creative artist, October 28, 2009
This review is from: X-Dreams (Audio CD)
I received this CD from my girlfriend for our anniversary, and I think it will be very difficult for her to top this in future anniversaries.

Annette Peacock, an artist, is phenomenal. She is extremely underrated, but her voice and contribution to music has been subtle, yet profound. Her performances were among the first to include electronic synthesizers in live performances, free form lyrics, and she's even considered a contributor to the development of hip-hop.

X-Dreams is Annette's fifth release. It includes some of her most notable work, including the edgy "Real and Defined Androgens", a song that holds massive sex appeal spoken from a very independent-feminine view. Throughout the album, Annette's sultry voice soars over the fluid sound of electronic synths and gritty guitar work laced into the complex, yet danceable rhythms. The focus of the album, lyrically, seems to be Peacock's struggle for confidence and equality (ex. "My Momma Never Taught Me How to Cook", and the expression of sexual release in a world of feminine sexual repression. The themes are complimented fantastically with intense and emotionally charged compositions.

Part Jimi Hendrix, Herbie Hancock, Sly and the Family Stone, Chick Corea, and Janis Joplin, this album's influences include Jazz, Rock, Blues, and R&B and should be considered an outstanding fusion album.
