Nothing wrong with it....,

This review is from: X-Men: Colossus - Bloodline (Paperback)
Between reviews here at Amazon, and what I recall from when the series was released, I came to this expecting it to be awful - I wouldn't have bought it, if it wasn't for having enjoyed Hine's other work in the X-Men's corner of the Marvel Universe, and the fact that I paid less than $5 for it.
Once I read it, I was pleasantly surprised. It's true, this is not an essential part of the X-Men's overarching story. It kills every new character introduced, brings on character back from the dead only to move him back off into limbo at best by the end, and doesn't really give us any great insight into Colossus himself. However, that can be said of several X-books that were continuing series, and many of the other mini-series out there. The story succeeded in making me want to keep reading, wanting to find out what happened next (in spite of the fact that I knew of the major reveal regarding Colossus' ancestry going in). Now, I should note that my rating is probably influenced by just how low my expectations were coming into this book. If you're looking for a classic, look elsewhere. However, it is a decent read, and the story hangs together reasonably well.

This book fills you with `why's...,
By
This review is from: X-Men: Colossus - Bloodline (Paperback)
After reading this book, your mind will be buzzing with `why' questions. Why did Marvel greenlight this project? Why was this `fanfiction' published and my/my little brother's wasn't? Why the heck did I buy this? And most importantly, a `what' question. What the heck were the creators thinking?
This book takes one of the mainstay marvel mutants, Peter Rasputain, Colossus of X-Men fame, and throws him in the center of a story so convoluted, yet juvenile, you'd almost think it's publication to be the last request of a make-a-wish child that was under 7 years old. It wasn't. I checked. No, fully grown men wrote this. Ouch. The writing and plot are not the only downfall. For those of you out there that can forgive a bad storyline if the art is nice enough, don't bother. The art is every bit as bad as the scripting. Neither get any better as the book progresses and at the end, you're left wondering how you'll ever get the hour of your life back that it took you to wade through this. I really can't tell you any more without giving away spoilers, and I'm not about to do that. But seriously, before you buy this, look at it somewhere first- flip though it- and you'll see what I mean. Then take your money and buy a classic X-Men book or one of the more recent Wolverine graphic novels. If you want really good classic Colossus, I highly recommend Essential X-Men vol. 1-6, when Peter was at his best. Or Astonishing X-Men even, just DON'T BUY THIS BOOK!

Keep in mind, I generally hate X-Men and hate most things from House of M on in the Marvel U. I bought this on a friends' recommendation to see if there was anything that could be done to salvage it, so I came in expecting a turkey and was not disappointed. That said, this is about as good as Marvel gets these days - a thin, somewhat character-driven story with some pretty art that's WAY too short on story. This is absolutely tragic. It could have been so much more. The research wasn't the worst I've seen, but there were plot holes I'm waiting for a clever fan to fix or will have to fix myself. The history was...Would it really kill anyone in the comics industry these days to Google something? My students do a better job on research papers they work on the day before they're due! This had so much potential to flesh out and evolve the main character and it failed to deliver on 90% of its potential. There's one good scene and one good panel someone could work with to make amazing. Also, the art was pretty - not Roy Lichtenstein, but pretty. Ho-hum. I do not care, but if you really get this stuff for the art, go for it. Thank the Muses I bought this one used and on sale because someone's fan fiction based around this is almost certain to be better.Purchase this only if you are a collector or feel the need to write the fanfic director's cut. If you're the later, contact me.

It was a good gift to give. It is a graphic novel of the Colussus Bloodline comic and I gave it to my friends so he can read all 5 and it save me around 10 dollars to get this book. The money i saved helped pay for the actual comic issues #1 I got for him and put it in a frame. So it is like he cna have his cake and eat it too.

Shouldn't have been collected,

This series needlessly complicates the history of the lead character to an embarrassing degree. The plot is convuluted at best and silly at worst; this is definitely not a book for anyone new to the X-Men or Colossus. While I had high hopes for the art based on the penciller's past performance, it comes off as amateurish. Finally, the last thing this previously bright, hopeful character needed after a recent several year "hiatus" was a dark solo tale that embraced the misteps made with his character leading up to his demise; unfortunately, that's what you get here.

this book was pretty shallow, but it wasn't quite as terrible as the other reviews suggest. the story and art aren't particularly great, but they're not painfully bad either. basically colossus finds out who his ancestors were and so a lot of the story ends up being a fairly tepid account of what was going on in russia a hundred years ago. in the present we see the return of a stock x-men villain (who some people will love seeing in any comic) and a character who was supposedly deceased (and it's not illyana). overall this is a better effort than the fairly recent back stories of rogue (in the first arc of her most recent solo series) and nightcrawler (the draco storyline in UXM). not essential reading, but if you're a really really big fan of colossus or a certain x-men villain then there are definitely worse things you could read.
