The caveat to this review is that my status as a long-time X-men aficionado suggests my expectations may be higher than the average gamer. However, my sincere desire to love this game provides counterbalance to any otherwise lofty expectations I might have held.

In short, don't buy this game. The concept of constructing a game predicated on choice suggests there would be different consequences for those choices during the game. Not so. The gameplay is frustratingly short and linear, regardless of what choices the gamer may explore at various stages. The fighting styles quickly become monotonous and the relatively limited number of additional powers to be explored and exploited in the x-gene system only adds to the mounting frustrations. Given the diaspora of over 300 mutants with unique powers in the marvel 616 universe, a selection of only 8 costumes/x-genes (Gambit's energy charged double damage, Pyro's fiery fist slams, Magneto's ballistic gunfire repulsion, Iceman's slip-'n-slide, Surge's electric resistance, Toad's toxic touch, Quicksilver's quickstep, and Wolverine's accelerated health regeneration) are a limited and uninspiring list of mutant abilities to augment your own already paltry powers (shadow blades, mass manipulation, or energy projection with only 4 manifestable ways to use one's mutant abilities).

The rants could continue ad infinitum but you already know the bottom line: this game isn't worth your time, let alone the $49.99 price tag.

1.0 out of 5 stars Just awful October 5, 2011

This game is a huge disappointment. I wouldn't even bother renting this game, i feel so stupid for paying full price. It sounded like you get to create your own mutant then side with either the brotherhood or the x-men. The reality is you choose between three lame characters and then choose one of three lame powers. The role playing aspect of it is also very bad. You unlock very disappointing additions to your power. There is one attack button...a punch...then you can do a slightly stronger punch that's it. All you do is run around punching there is absolutely no creativity to this game at all.

1.0 out of 5 stars Garbage, Pure Garbage May 11, 2012

Fun: 1.0 out of 5 stars
Like anyone I was excited for the new X-Men video game release after the first two successful Legend games. So I preodered this game and waited. The game came and well it was not very good. Actually it was garbage!! The dialouge is just horrific and pointless as well as the story. After the first mission/level I totally forgot what the point of the game was and what was going on. One would think that if they got an actual writer for the X-Men comics, he would actually write a good game. Instead we get dull dialouge and no real linar story.

Then there is the game play. If you love pressing A B and Z and nothing else then you are in luck. If not then you have the true worst button masher.

Finally there is the cut scenes...if you can call them that. All they really are, two comic panels of whatever characters talking the dull dialouge. I know it's Wii so the graphics are not like PS3 or 360 but could we have at least gotten an artist that cared. Same goes for Wii character designs. Just dreadful.

Overall this game is garbage. I should have waited till ACTUAL REAL LEGIT (not a fan podcast) reviews came out and avoided it like they all said. I traded this in right away.

1.0 out of 5 stars The Worst January 4, 2012

This is the worst piece of crap I've ever played, and it's not the console, the game sucks on the 3 consoles. Enough said, won't waste another second writing about it.

1.0 out of 5 stars Skip it. October 2, 2013

It's extremely cheap for a reason. I could list 50 psOne games with more fluid controls. Unless you just want every X-Men game ever made, skip it.

1.0 out of 5 stars Uninspired dreck. February 18, 2012

[Note: this review is for the Wii version.]

Does Marvel have no say in products that bear its corporate imprints? Could they have pulled this piece of unimaginitive, derivative garbage if one of their reps had a chance to play a close-to-finish build of this game? No licensed game should be this bad or banal!

With astoundingly horrible graphics and a trite first-person narrative approach this game must be the worst X-men game of all time. In Legends we got to play as our favorite characters in a dungeon crawler that allowed us to use several individual and some team powers. In this we get to play as some vapid teenager with a backstory lifted from a cereal box? We never get to play as any one of our beloved X-men or any of their nefarious nemeses?

Avoid at all costs!!!

This wouldn't be worth a dime even if you found it in a bargain bin or garage sale.

I hope that someone was fired for perpetrating this product on the unsuspecting and hopeful gaming universe. Shame on them and the developers. And on Marvel, if they knew what they were releasing. A buck's more than a buck in some cases; it's loyalty.

1.0 out of 5 stars Ugh...another bad X-Men game November 8, 2011
Platform for Display:Nintendo Wii
Fun: 1.0 out of 5 stars
I rented this (thank GOD) and after 2 hours, sent it back. It is THAT bad. The camera angles are shaky at best, the controls are not customizable (the jump and attack buttons are reversed from most games), and the worst part is you don't even play as an X-Man. You choose one of three "new" mutants (read: non-canon) who all have the same power set, and interact with the traditional characters. The graphics are laughable, especially the cut scenes. The animators obviously took shortcuts -- the images are what would have looked good on a PS1, and their mouths don't even move.

My advice? Don't waste your time, let alone money, on this abomination.
