X-men Evolution,
By An 11-year old viewer (sbsr) - See all my reviews
This review is from: X-Men Evolution - Xplosive Days [VHS] (VHS Tape)
The original X-men did cover a few adult issues and was quite heavy for younger children. These new series are really well done though there is a hint of The New Batman-Superman Adventures style. Overall, quite well done. The new versions of Sabretooth and Wolverine is better although there are some disappointing things such as Toad's strange and scrawny body. It doesn't look like his figure was supposed to be adapted from any place, nor comic or movie. Magneto's boundaries are better at some levels and worse than others. But the fresh plot always wants you to view it over and over again.

This review is from: X-Men Evolution - Xplosive Days [VHS] (VHS Tape)
This cassette features three episodes of the first series of X-Men Evolution. These episodes introduce important characters of good and bad nature. They introduce THE BLOB,QUICKSILVER and SPYKE even though in series three Spyke isn't a main character. It's best to buy or watch UnXpected Changes first if you don't get the storyline. UnXpected Changes is the first part of Series 1. Xplosive Days is the second part. X marks the Spot is the third part But you'll have to pre-order the final part out in September 2003. This video isn't as good as some of the episodes in Series 3 but they are a good way to introduce main character. So I believe this is one wicked video. [...]

I've been an X-Men fan since I was 14 years old. (okay so that was only 8 years), and I've seen the other X-Men cartoon. I don't know about others, but I have to say that this cartoon gives a good story even if it isn't exactly like the comic books. I like the way they present the characters; very much what I would imagine them to be animated. Yes, some things change. But that is to be expected. I think X-Men Evolution in itself presents a very good story to follow, nice animation, and great characters to enjoy.

Evolution is more like de-evolution,

For anyone who has read the original comics and seen the original series, you will be throughly surprised by this new installment. The bad points: Almost every X-Man and Brotherhood member is either a high school student or teacher. Mystique is the principal. Toad, Jean, Nightcrawler, Rogue, Cyclops, etc are students. Wolverine is sorta a mentor for them at Xavier's home. The school they go to is not Xavier's. It is a public high school. So they must deal with hiding their powers and looks, for some of them. Good Points: Animation is excellent. The best I have seen in a long time. I love the way Nightcrawler looks. The stories are well written. And for the most part, they have kept the key pieces of the original stories true. Wolverine and Sabretooth having a past, Wolvering not knowing everything, Rogue/Mystique and Nightcrawler/Mystique ties. Cyclops/Jean relationship. I am a new fan of X-Men, brought on by the hit movie and I do like this show. I am unsure whether die-hard, long-time fans are welcoming it as much. I think for the kiddie set (I am 22 years old), it's a good show and teached valuable lessons, as the comics from yester-years have taught about racisim and family.

wildstorm comics are all flash and no substance. Please don't compare to Marvel. Hee HeeAs for X-men Evolution, the stories are pretty good, character designs are great. The animation is as good as sat. morning animation can get. The acting was more believable than the original show which was heavy on the over dramatics. eg. "jean! Noooooooooooooooooooooo!" overall X-men is a great show and worth waiting to purchase on dvd.

this other reviewer took the words out my mouth, so i'll just quote him
"Any "traditional" X-men fan over 25 will be disappointed with X-men Evolution. Fans who did not grow up reading the X-men comics or cherishing the original X-men Animated Series may like it, (people under 15) but these fans are not the hard core base of X-men fans to which I refer. So many bad ideas went into this Evolution series. First of all, I can't get past the ridiculous notion of the X-men attending the local public high school! (And with Mystique as the principal?) The X-men's school was the Xavier School for the Gifted - Period! In addition to that, the idea of the "good" mutants going to this same high school as the "bad" mutants is just plain stupid. They were mortal enemies, and no way could they co-exist in the same school, even with the conflicts that happen in these stories. Furthermore, the introduction, at this early stage of the X-men story-line, of characters like Nightcrawler, (whose depiction in this series stinks,) Rogue, (who is portrayed like some punk Gothic chick) and the new mutants is just not the way it happened nor should it happen even in a revised edition like this. I can handle Storm and Wolverine as early mentors, because they are supposed to be older like they are shown to be here, but the others were just not in existence at this stage of X-men history. Ice Man and Beast were supposed to be there from the beginning just like Cyclops and Jean. The Angel, who was my favorite, was another original member of the team, but he doesn't make his appearance until later seasons. And since when were the twins, Quicksilver and the Scarlet Witch enemies as they were portrayed here? They were supposed to be as close as any brother/sister twins could ever be. Pietro was always supposed to be defending his sister to the end. He was never terrified of her. And what's with this show making Wanda so super powerful like that? She wasn't so super-mighty as portrayed here. Lastly, I must criticize the art because it is just hard to look at. I know they are going for a stylized look like in some of the comics, but, like another critic observed, the noses are just plain bad. And the huge feet bother me as well. If YOU like it just because it is something on the X-men being done, that's great, I suppose it is better than nothing. But for me the original series in the 90s, (yes, that means the original "series") was far superior, (I don't understand how anyone could criticize the art in that show. In my view the art in many of those original series episodes rivaled even the best of Disney, especially "The Phoenix Saga", and the "Dark Phoenix Saga", as well as many more: beautiful art!) Sadly, what we have now in "Evolution" is some Hollywood executive's vision of a revised X-men universe, targeting today's bubble gum brigade, (ie: the high school setting, Spyke and his skateboard.) Hollywood has always thought they know better than the creators of the genre, but usually, like in this case, it only results in a bastardization of what so many of us grew up loving."

The series start is decent. Don't expect it to follow old story lines and you won't be disappointed. A pretty good buy for any Marvel or just X-Men fan.

Being a fan of the early 90's X-men cartoon series we were loathed to give this new series a chance. However, after giving it a chance with an open mind we will say will say it did grow on us. No, it doesn't follow the comic story lines. It is more of a mixture of the comic book and the movie series. The Spike character is similar to the godson character in the 90's cartoon series in his relationship with Storm. Different powers, but similar idea. The volume is still early in the series so everyone is still being introduced. The series production was pretty good. Good theme song and the character development was done well. The only thing we disliked about this disc is the fact that you have to collect 5-6 dvds to get the whole season. Too bad the series wasn't collected until the third season. We know it lets them make more money, but by now the series should have been put in a collection.
