Juvenile and Dull,
By Ali Hausman "The Sleepless Reviewer" (Los Angeles, CA, United States) - See all my reviews (VINE VOICE) (REAL NAME)
This review is from: X-Men: First Class : Tomorrow's Brightest (Paperback)
Definitely not as good as the film, Xmen-First Class, that was VERY loosely drawn from this comic. There is, perhaps, one good story in the collection but the rest are juvenile (as in for young, easily amused children) and incredibly, shockingly dull.

X-Men: First Class... Not as good as I had hoped.,

I don't really know what I expected when I bought this book, but I expected more. The artwork and storytelling is fun, but it's episodic and stand alone stories are hard to get into. I wanted an adventure featuring an in-depth characterization of the first class of the X-Men, but what I got was a pretty basic storytelling of some teenagers with mutants. That aside, however, the stories were fun and the artwork was great, I just wanted more from this book.

Decent for kids,

The cover art is deceptive. The art inside the book is similar to a web comic. The story and writing is fine as an entry level into comics for kids but for 12+ I would think they find it too childish.

Not Bad, But Not Great,

I'm not a huge X-Men fan, but this book got good reviews, so I gave it a shot. Nothing too spectacular here, just eight self-contained stories featuring the original five X-Men solving problems.
I can't help but make comparisons with the first "Utimate X-Men" book by Mark Millar. Both feature the debut of the X-Men (as teenagers), but "Ultimate X-Men" has more energy, and is far more exciting. My thinking is that people seem to like "First Class" because it's better than most other convoluted X-Men books out there. However, because I haven't read any of those other books, I'm left with no point of reference. To me, this book is your average superhero yarn, well written, well drawn, but with no real teeth. Go ahead and get it if you can't get enough of the X-Men. Otherwise, forget it. You're not missing much.

Poor Writing - Even for Children,

I bought this collection because I thought it might have the promise that Ultimate Spiderman had...nope. The writing isn't even befitting of a children's show, and the art is so-so. Perhaps these books got better as the series continued but I don't really care to find out. It's a shame really.
