You get to be Wolverine...including the times he gets beat...,

For those of you looking for a chance to be Wolverine, this is definitely the game for you. I'm a shooter player more than anything but I'd heard good things about this game and I like Wolverine since he's the best X-Men character.
You take control of Wolverine from a third-person and do what Wolverine does best. You can brandish your claws or use a sort of "animal sense" that highlights hints on how to get out of where you are. The story follows the movie and the maps are VERY linear. Keep that in mind. This is a rollercoaster ride, not GTA or anything open-ended. Your attacks are based on a combination of keypresses and movement. It's very consoley but you can definitely play with WASD + Mouse. You'll swipe, leap, grab, slam and toss your way through baddies. As you learn the combos and progress, you'll just cut through the enemies...up until you hit the bosses. Yup, bosses. And the boss fights are just stupid. Your first one, the leviathan exemplifies this. Here are the problems: 1) The camera forces you to look at the boss so you end up getting killed sometimes because you're trying to dodge AWAY from the boss but the camera spins you right at him. 2) After about 2/3 of the boss's heath bar is gone, he transforms into something harder. In the case of the leviathan, his skin hardens and leaves only a small part exposed that you can damage. You have to jump on to him and attack him to make any more progress...not easy considering he gets to slam you with a huge boulder regardless of where you are in the little arena you're fighting it. It's ridiculous. 3) Once you do get the hang of what you need to do, you'll spend a lot of time just doing it: leap on, mash the attack keys until the boss is about to grab you, jump off, dodge, dodge, leap on, repeat. It's stupid considering how much fun the rest of the fighting is. Not all bosses play out exactly like this but they're pretty similar. As you progress, you'll get to upgrade your abilities and unlock new ones. You'll fuel a lot of these abilities with Rage...which is like Mana in a fantasy game. I started to feel like I was playing Diablo again...killing enemies and smashing everything to get some Rage. Outside of the bosses, the only other downside are the stupid cut scenes. I'm sorry but the inability to skip a cutscene is just dumb especially for replayability. Overall, I'd recommend getting this and having some fun but be prepared for some nonsense along the way. It distracts from a great game but fortunately only represents a small part of the game, not the whole thing.

X-Men Origins- Wolverine is a third person action game that follows the events of the recent film. This game may be the best licensed movie game ever made. The game is all out action, but you can build up your character with experience points gained by defeating enemies. Upgrades include more damage, increased health, and special rage powers. The game is very gory as Wolvie evicerates and decapitates his enemies with wild abandon. Executing all of Wolvie's moves are very easy to do with keyboard and mouse set up, and every action button makes Wolvie do something very cool. Graphics are terrific, and the game runs very well on my system (specs to follow). I highly recommend this game to fans of action titles that aren't afraid of a little (ALOT!) blood.
My system specs: OS: Win XP sp3 AMD Athlon 64 x 2 dual core processor 2.00 Ghz (running at 5.70 speed) GeForce 8600GT 512Mb graphics card (single card) 2 Gig of RAM I know this doesn't sound like a killer system, but I can run Bioshock, STALKER, Fallout 3, Crysis, Hellgate, The Witcher, Assassin's Creed, FEAR 2, Cryostasis, etc. all on high or maximum settings with hardly a hiccup.

Very well made, kept me up all night the first day I got it. Very graphic, and fast paced. Controls are easy to pick up and special attacks are quick to learn. Highly recommended for anyone seeking a fast-paced action adventure.

This should have been the movie.,

It's not uncommon to have a video game that is better than the movie version adaptation of its characters. The X-Men Origins Wolverine movie from last year was a pretty horrible movie. It made a ton of money because it's an action packed blockbuster, however, it sacrificed and a made a joke of so many comic book characters like the Blob and Deadpool that comic fans were left speechless. The movie was another dark spot for the X-Men franchise which hasn't gotten better since X-2. When I picked up this game, I expected the game to be utter crap, but I was very surprised at how much I enjoyed it.
It's definitely geared for a R rated audience and doesn't treat the characters bad as the movie did. It has a big more of a background for the X-Men universe (though beating a Wolverine game you still didn't get much info for the supporting cast) Pros: Graphics and Video: Graphics are stellar, smooth, gorgeous, and very detailed. Every character looks larger than life from Wolverine, to Gambit, to the Sentinels, Victor Creed, Weapon X, and a host of other villains. Characters: A lot more characters are introduced that the movie. The movie introduced several characters but it introduced in such a banal way that you really didn't care what happened to them. Here at least the characters from the movie get more time to expand. Better yet is the fact that most of them look menacing and aren't made to look like jokes like the movie did. We also more detail into the experiments that Stryker has done to mutants. In the movie, it's thrown together at the last second but really leaves you with nothing. We also delve into the covert missions that Team X has done, a lot more that's actually shown in the movie. Again in the movie, not much time is devoted to that, but in the game this is expanded a lot more. We also see the creation of the Sentinels and see how Senator Kelly fits into all of this. A lot of the highlights in the game come from fighting the Sentinel machine. Top notch stuff and again the Sentinel makes no appearance whatsoever in the movie. Everything is so glossed over in the movie it's not even funny. Comic book references: The game is loaded with references and quotations from the X-Men comics, and X-Men movie franchise. Not a lot but that sole attempt at trying to give you a comic book feel elevated the game.Controls: Activision, Raven Software made the controls as easy as possible. Wolverine has a lot of super moves and combo moves. You sometimes have to upgrade him to take advantage of them. I liked that they went all out and really tried to make Wolverine as complete as possible. For instance, you can actually regenerate when you are hit just like in the comic books. The programmers added a lot of cool battle scenes and tricks that make this game a mind blow experiences. You might be fighting on the top of skyscraper, or taking apart a helicopter and it's crew in mid-flight, other times you might be taken on Weapon X itself. Sound: Sound was equally amazing. Video games I tell you have really changed in the last twenty years and that's not even talking about Pc games. The video and sound you can get out these games nowadays is amazing. Anyways, sound was excellent everything from the fights and grunts of battle are heard. The voice recordings are great too. Hugh Jackman and LIev Schreiber reprise their roles from the movie for this. The supporting voices are decent too. You don't even notice the cast switches here because the videos voices are that professional. Overall: Great This is a great attempt at bringing the Wolverine story to life. In my opinion, does it ten times better than the horrible movie that while entertaining completely glossed and destroyed the characters that it was trying to replicate This game has it all. I liked that they didn't gloss over a lot of areas and better added a lot of news like the experiments with the mutants, addition of Senator Kelly. the creation, and fight with Sentinel. The official Pc requirements say more or less to have: PIV 3000, 1GB RAM, 8GB HDD, 256MB video card. However, as most Pc games more, you'll probably want to have more than what the official requirements say to get a really pleasant gaming experience. I ran this on Windows XP with an Intel Celeron Cpu with Cpu speed of 2.00 gigahertz, 1 gigabyte of Ram and really important here an NVidia Geforce 7900 Gs. That alone made the playability excellent and more than enjoyable.

This game is 10X better than the movie and should have been what the movie was. The blood and gore is awesome and is true to the Wolverine in the comics. The graphics are topnotch and there's lots of different moves and combos you can do. Great game.

This game is wicked fun, and were it not for Batman Arkham Asylum, I would say it's definitely the best game based on a comic book character..
My biggest complaint with this game, is the lack of polish in the graphics. Compared to Batman AA's graphics, the textures are far less detailed and have lower resolution, as if the developers rushed the game instead of taking time with it. With that said, it's still a good game, and easily worth the money.

Not a great game, but a fun one. It's short and sweet. The combat with the normal enemies is great. This may be the most violent action game I've every played. It's really brutal, in a great way. Does get pretty repetitive though. Especially the boss fights and the fights with the large monsters (jump on, slash, slash, slash, jump off before he grabs you).
Overall a 4, good but not great. |
