Very fun,
This review is from: X-Statix Presents: Dead Girl (Paperback)
Peter Milligan's X-Statix series ended with the heroes dying. One of these characters is Dead Girl, who already knows a lot about the dead. In this series, she is recruited by Dr. Strange to help suss out dead villains who keep coming back to life. This series is a fun examination on the "dead is dead" policy of certain comic editors, even as characters get to be reborn on what seems to be an almost monthly basis. Which characters gets that right?
Fans of the X-Statix series will see familiar faces. Fans of Marvel comics overall will see a few much loved, but dead, characters, too.

While it's not quite the same as having the late, lamented X-Statix back, the Dead Girl miniseries is pretty close. If anything, the narrower focus (she's not quite the only member in the book, but pretty close) makes this a particularly good X-Statix story, with Pete Milligan getting the chance to do some of his best character work in a while.
His takes on Dr. Strange and Wong are particularly fun, without coming across as petty or mean-spirited. In fact, for a book that spends so much time in Hell or among the damned, there's a real sweetness that pervades this book, which is unusual enough in superhero fare, and forget about books that share this sort of subject matter. Highly recommended for X-Statix fans or fans of Milligan's other work. |
