X-Statix, Vol. 4: X-Statix vs. The Avengers

X-Statix vs. the Avengers contains three story arcs. One is "The Cure", the next is "X-Statix vs. the Avengers" and the final issue of the series, which is in a league of its own.

In the Cure, which reprints X-Statix #19 & 20, Myles Alfred, Vivisector decides to `cure' himself of his mutant gene, in order to make a normal life for himself with his new lover and to please his parents. In the end, he learns that not only is the grass not greener on the other side, but the price of his actions could be more than he, or X-Statix can pay.

In X-Statix vs. The Avengers, which reprints X-Statix #21-25, more of Doop's mysterious background and power capacity is revealed, but it leads to Doop's brain exploding. Both the X-Statix and the Avengers (who want Doop for themselves) chase around the world and battle each other for the brain pieces. Some truly funny moments happen. The fight between Mr. Sensitive and Iron Man is worth the price of the graphic novel.

Then, in the final issue, X-Statix #26, everyone is getting ready to disband the team that has brought them wealth and recognition. But one final payday proves to be a proposal that is too tempting to walk away from. And, much like other X-Statix tales, this one doesn't have that happy of an ending....

Milligan and Allred poured their hearts into this series, and it shows. This graphic is one of the strongest in the X-Statix line, and would make a fine addition to any comic collectors graphic novel shelf.

I won't reveal what happens in the last issue but i do want to say that it was the only way the series could have ended. On that note, I wish that it would have been a better ending but it didn't satisfy me emotionally. the rest of the stories are very well done and X-Force/X-Statix stands as one of the best contemporary superhero comics.

As a whole, after U Go Girl died in X-Force and the name was changed (I don't consider this a spoiler since if you've read this far then you know it and if you're just picking it up then she is referenced like once as a member who died), the series did seem to lose its emotional core but continue with the same quality of storytelling.

While the art is very good, the fill in art throughout the series has been uneven. The allred stuff has been superb though.

Kudos to Peter Milligan and Mike Allred, the most unorthodox superhero creative team that pulled off a great comic.

This is an exceptional series by an exceptional team.
