I purchased this unit for a project I had to get done in a short period of time. It arrived Wednesday and when I went to use the soldering iron on Thursday I found it was defective. The tip could not be tightened so it was moving around when you touch the board. I sent the seller an email on Thursday stating that my iron was broken and the tip temperature was about 60 C lower than what the display was reading and could not be calibrated. Within 2 hours, the seller replied that they are sending a new iron but did not address the tip temperature issue. On Saturday I had a replacement iron BUT when I went to check temperatures, they were all over the place and I could not get a steady reading. The tip temperature bounced around from 220-290 when I set it to 300C. There is no way to calibrate for this. So to get my project done, I had to increase my iron temp to 400C which causes the tip to oxidize quickly so I guess it is good there are 10 tips included.
I also decided to check the temperatures of the hot air and this was very stable as expected within 5 degrees.
The other Main issue I have with the unit are the cheap lamp which is advertised as a $39.95 value is nowhere worth that price. I can buy the same poor quality lamp at Kmart for less than $10. The base is too light and tips over too easily.
I will summarize what I think the Pros and Cons are for this system.
1. Excellent Customer service
2. Hot air works well and is reasonably quiet
3. Hot air temperature is accurate and stable
4. 10 tips are included with the system

1. Soldering iron is very poor quality. Not holding temperature.
2. Soldering iron took about 1.5 minutes to reach 300 C on the tip, even though the display said it was at 300 the whole time.

I bought this machine because I found myself working on SMDs more and more. I got it before getting my current machine, an Aouye 968A+, a similar unit and better quality. Both came from a different site selling soldering equipment, and when I saw the 7040-XTS here I just had to say something.

It is a nice design having both a soldering iron, for regular soldering, and a hot air gun, for SMD work. The vacuum pump is quieter than the 968A+, and the vacuum pick up tool is a metal body rather than a plastic one. These are the only reasons why I gave it 2 stars, and only because Amazon doesn't allow partial stars.

First, let's start with the lamp that comes with the unit. It's a nice looking lamp, but the pictures don't show you the thing falling over every 5 seconds because the base it nothing but plastic. The light and magnifying glass makes the thing top heavy, and the neck is not very long when you want to use the magnifying glass.. The site I got it from advertised this lamp as a $39.95 value, for free. If I were to give it a value, I would give it $5.00 or less, much less.

Second, the solder iron stand and coil cleaner. The iron stand is almost completely enclosed, only a few openings for air. The enclosure tends to warm up and eventually get hot when the iron is in used. The stand for the 968A+ has no enclosure except that where the iron rests. The rubber foam on the bottom of both the stand and coil cleaner mean that they move if you try and use them. Whereas the 968A+ iron stand has hard rubber feet on the bottom of the stand and the coil cleaner attaches to the stand so they don't move around.
