I will write another review after appx 3-4 months of use. For me, however, this is a perfect. I am a 64 year old man with serious heart disease. I need regular exercise, but have to stop if I feel my heart stressing too much. The X-Treme Electric Bicycle XB-502 allows me that flexibility. I can pedal or turn on the electric drive and cruise. A perfect fit also was the low price which allowed me to buy it for cash. Also perfect is I need no drivers license, do not have to register it, or insure it. I can ride it on bicycle paths just like a regular bike, or on the street where allowed.

ridden every day for two years,
This review is from: X-Treme Scooters XB-502 Electric Bicycle (Sports)
I have ridden this extreme e-bike for 2 years everyday. I love it. It is made in China. It is not perfect, but I have not had much problem with it. I had a flat tire on the back, but I fixed it with never leak or fix-a-flat. I never let the charge get totally dead, so it has always charged. The instructions are about useless, but I did manage to put the rest together by myself and I was a 53 year old 5' tall woman with determination. I really like the storage in the seat and trunk, because I even rode it in the winter(I could not ride it on ice, that would be stupid.) I could load $200.00 worth of groceries on it using recycle bags sat in front of me.

I am about 5'11 230 pounds, and had some qualms about the potential power in these bikes. I happened to find one that was for sale "Like new/barely used" locally for much less than a new one cost, and jumped on it. I am so happy that I did.
The motor on the bike is easily able to propel me up to its top speed of 20 mph. Granted, with my extra weight (It uses 170 lb rider as its guideline) I lose a few miles on the charge, but thats ok. 2 things to note. 1) The speedometer on mine was saying I was going 40. I had someone pace me and found that it was displaying roughly double the actual speed, so 40=20. 2) THIS IS SO MUCH FUN!

X-treme: worst company I have ever dealt with,

I owned an electric scooter/bicycle shop in California for three years. The web site is still up under the name "Enviro-bike". During this time, I repaired many types of electric scooters and electric bicycles. I closed my shop in 2009, due to a tough economy and the fact that people in southern California only want vehicles that can travel on the freeway. Now I only sell the replacement batteries for electric scooters, electric bicycles and mobility scooters. These are my credentials for writing this review about X-treme scooters and this particular product.
By far, the worst products I ever had the displeasure of trying to repair for customers were from X-Treme. My overall impression of the quality of their products, was that they were built to be thrown away when broken instead of repaired. A few times, I tried to order parts from this company. They were impossible to contact by phone. Messages left were never returned. Once, I ordered a part from their website and received a message that the part was on backorder. After not receiving the part for three weeks, I wrote them about it. I received no reply. I called several times about it and finally contacted a parts person. He told me they never had the part and never would be getting it into stock. Folks, this is an indication to me that most or all of the listings of replacement parts on their website are bogus. Recently, I got a call from a man in Connecticut who bought the X-treme XB-502 through the Amazon website. Amazon does not sell this product directly. It is sold through X-treme's Amazon store. The customer in question bought the 502 for his wife, a small woman who weighs just over one hundred pounds. The bike travels less than 16 miles on a full charge over mostly level ground. The top speed is 15 mph, not 20. He phoned me about replacement batteries for this brand new unit. After many tries, he was unable to contact customer service at the vendors website. He told me he needed 12 volt 10ah batteries, since those are what is specified here in the Amazon product listing. My research on the X-treme site showed me that this bike required 12 ah batteries instead of 10ah. I asked him to open the battery box and inside, he found 12 ah batteries. To Amazon's credit, they will be the ones paying for his replacement batteries, not X-treme. Additionally, the XB-502 seems to ship with a single-stage 12 volt charger. The user is warned not to charge the batteries for more than eight hours at a time. Every electric vehicle I have ever encountered, regardless of country of manufacture, has shipped with a two or three stage charger. An inexpensive two stage charger charges the batteries to about 90% of their full capacity and then goes into "trickle charge" mode. This means that the charger may be left attached to the batteries overnight or even longer. In this way, a two stage charger protects the battery from overcharging. If you own one of these scooters, I would highly recommend replacing the charger with one from TNC scooters. I have dealt with TNC many times in the past and they are a reputable company. For those of you who are enjoying your Xtreme-502, I wish you every success and happiness with your purchase. However, I shudder to think of what may happen if you ever need support, replacement parts or repairs for this product.

XB-502 Great so far...(Grand Rapids, MI),

I have only had my XB-502 for two weeks now, but it runs great. I would have given it 5 stars but after receiving it (requires assembly) I discovered that the holes drilled in the front headlight plate were drilled too large for the screws provided and that 4 of the holes for the floor mat were not drilled at all. Otherwise, I would have had it assembled in an hour. These things were fairly easily remedied with a drill and buying some larger screws from the hardware store but this worried me as to the craftsmanship of the bike. Two weeks so far and I haven't had any problems, it runs great. I will update this review if anything changes.

After just a few hours of use (30 days of purchase) the rear wheel just broke. The quality of materials is terrible. The product states it comes with 90 days warranty but my attempts to contact the manufacturer have been in vain. No response so far and local dealers don't want to process warranty either. I need Amazon to respond to this as this product was sold by Amazon Store. I need a full refund and trust me, don't buy this product.

great little scooter; runs great on level ground; has to work hard on hills, but will do if not too steep and not too long; two or three hills in a row don't work! but again: level ground, 28 mph for 19 miles per charge; great riding; lights and blinkers are excellent; drivers see you and wait and keep distance - quite different than with a regular bike;

Great little scooter to learn on,

After months of research, I settled on this scooter for my first scooter experience and my first electric vehicle experience. I expected this to have some limitations, but was willing to put up with these for the price since it was going to be a learning curve to determine what I like/don't like and would want next time when I'm more experienced and ready to spend a little more on a vehicle of this time. This is a sharp looking scooter that is FUN to ride, inexpensive to operate, and its better for the environment than fossil fuel vehicles. People are fascinated by it and ask questions every time I ride it somewhere.
Limitations: * It does slow down going up steep hills * When ridden at night with the lights on the battery goes pretty fast * The mirrors are not a good design. They aren't tall enough and are very hard to adjust, but I did manage to get 1 adjusted well enough to use. * The turn signal is difficult to turn off without accidently setting it off in the other direction. * The included charger has to be watched carefully so you don't overcharge it. A smart charger would be a good investment. Problems with assembly: * The instructions were limited, but still it wasn't too difficult to figure out. * The floor mat I received was rubber, not carpet, and that was fine because I didn't want carpet anyway. As others noted, the pegs on the mat didn't line up with the pre-drilled holes on the scooter, so some minor modifcations had to be made. In the state where I live this scooter does not have to be registered or insured, so that saves a lot of money. I was spending $80 a month on public transit to run short errands and go to the gym. With this scooter, I have cut that down to about $20 on public transit and I save time not having to wait on bus or train so much. This is a great little scooter for short errands. Love the storage under the seat and didn't end up using the trunk. I do think the price on it should be a little lower as its not of great quality, but it does the job, is fun to ride and is great to learn on.

xb-500,
This review is from: X-Treme Scooters XB-502 Electric Bicycle (Sports)
we owned an xb-500 for two years. While I loved the power, style and range of it, we had many problems. We had three flats which we had to pay a scooter shop to repair at $50 each. This shop said that a cable ran too close the wheel on the front tire and that it was dangerous to drive. The headlights quit working after a month. I was able fix them by reconnecting a wire, but I had to pull off the dash cover. Then the charger quit working after about 10 months. I'm not sure why, but the blinkers never worked. Please, consider the cost and how you will maintain this bike if you buy one.

I bought this E-Bike from Amazon.com back in November of 2010. I ride it to and from work 5-days a week and on the weekends down to the beach and back both days. I first saw this little gem on craigs list. I fell in love with the bike but the dude was trying to sell a used item for full price! I tried to reason that the warranty was half used so he needed to chop some money off the price but he refused. I waved my cash in his face and walked away. (moron)
So I ordered a brand new one from Amazon.com in PINK! Love it! At the time I purchased this baby it was only $799! I am shocked to see it for sale at the current price of over $1100! But not really surprised at that as I know I got a super deal. Other peddle assist electrics retail for over $2000 and they don't have ANY cargo space! I put it together myself - I am mechanically inclined - and charged it up. I did expect it to go 25 miles on a charge as advertised but did not take the hills and weight of the rider into account with the first charge so it pooped out on me unexpectedly. Once I got used to the distance it would go and the type of hills it would climb - NO PROBLEM!!! With me on it, and climbing uphill (these are BIG HILLS - in fact it is ALL uphill to my house for 3-5 miles) 7-days a week - it will go a distance of 12 miles on a single charge. I charge it every other day and if I go a little farther on it - there are plenty of places to plug in while I am out paddling on the ocean, have dinner, see a movie, shop! Speaking of shopping! I have fashioned saddle bags out of two Trader Joe's insulated grocery carriers (the squarish blue ones with the zipper) - I use small caribbeaners to clip the two inside handles together, open the seat trunk, and place the bags on either side with the clipped handles inside the trunk, load the bags, zip them, use another caribbeaner to clip the two outside handles and then close the seat down on them - VOILA! And the little bike hauls my big butt AND both big bags full of groceries up the hill to my house without a single problem! (I'm SURE I look rediculous!) However, everywhere I go on my little electric gem with my pink helmet, I get smiles and waves and the occassional surprised jump as it makes no noise and I have been accused of sneaking up on people! Folks stop and ask about it, people at work are jealous because I have so much extra money that I am not spending on registration, insurance, gas, upkeep, as well as the extra cash incentive I get from my employer for using alternative transportation. (yes, I am getting PAID to ride this e-bike) People occassionally accuse me of riding illegally in the bike lane as they pass me on thier bicycle - lol! I don't care, I know that we legally go wherever the bicycles can go! I always have a smile on my face when I ride! Why did I not give it 5 stars you ask? There are several reasons - The tail light burned out and I found that it was nearly impossible to find a replacement anywhere in town - in fact trying to figure out what kind of shop to take it to was a mystery - it's part bike and part scooter! It takes a "56V/10/5W BLT" tail light - which is a dual filiment bulb to work both the tail light and the brake light. I contacted the manufacturer and got a bit of a run around - customer service is NOT GOOD! So I plugged these numbers into the computer and came up with a number of sites in China! Wow! But finally found them on EBAY and bought 5 of them and it's a good thing I did! I have used two of them already! I got really lucky when I tried to find someone to adjust my brakes - one bike shop owner told me that there is a bike shop in town that handles some really odd bicycles from all over the world. These young lads embraced the idea of taking care of me and it. They are really eco-conscious and willing to help - do a great job and don't charge an arm and a leg! These are the reasons why it only got 4 stars! I admit that it would be much easier if manufactures would better support their products and I will do a better job of checking out the customer service aspect the next time I purchase ANYTHING. There seems to be a mentality regarding many foreign based electronic manufacturing companies and that is "if it's broken, buy a new one!" I learned this when I worked for such a company in the customer service/repair department fielding phone calls and speaking with people who's electronic items where kept for MONTHS without ever being repaired. It started out as an American company (Fisher Corp) and was bought by a foreign company. Once that happened, the customer service went into the dumper and we were left without any reasonable explanation for it. I also know that these manufacturers need to change their ways! The world view of electronic waste is changing and they need to become more responsible for it. One of the best ways to do that is to support the products they make by supplying parts and to provide adequate, friendly, accessible customer service. I LOVE my e-bike and will ride it until it will no longer move - then I will find a more reliable company and purchase another. (or have my inventer-brother take it apart and fit it with better electronics!) All in all - I think I have already gotten my money's worth out of it! Happy Trails! |
