4.0 out of 5 stars Pretty decent bike for commuting or other short trips, July 27, 2010
This review is from: X-Treme Scooters Ladies Lithium Electric Powered Mountain Bike (Sports)
For the record, I didn't get this bike from Amazon but I couldn't find another site to post a review so this review is about the product only and does not include Amazon service. I bought the bike from a not-so-local dealer. Considering the travel time and cost and the difficulty of working with the dealer, I think Amazon would have been the better option for me.

I bought the step-through or "ladies'" bike but as far as I can tell, the mens' bike is identical except for the frame so I think this is relevant to that version, too. In fact, the x-treme website shows both versions as the same model. I've had it about 2 months now and have put about 200 miles on it so far so I have a decent amount of experience with it but I'm sure I'll continue to discover more.

Although I'm generally satisfied with it, and I think for most people it will be totally adequate, there are some improvements that would have made it 5 star for me.

Price: I paid $1099 plus tax at the dealer. At a price under $1000, it would be great. Don't expect to save money using this bike vs. gas. At $3/gallon and 25 mpg, you would have to replace over 9,000 miles of car trips to make the bike pay for itself. However, if you used it to replace or to avoid buying a car, then it easily pays for itself in avoided car payments, insurance, maintenance, etc.

Weight and size: At 52 lbs, it's a heavy bike. And it's bigger than your typical bike. So I found it difficult to manage in tight spots. I've used it a few times on the train during non-rush hour and it was still a bit of a hassle. Forget about using it when it's crowded. You can't really sling it over your shoulder so be willing to spend some time on the elevator or escalator. I don't hang this bike up because it's just too unwieldy. Although it's supposed to be a mountain bike, I don't see using it as such. It's just too heavy and I think the additional power doesn't overcome the extra weight over a real MTB.

Range: The advertised range is 20-25 miles. I haven't tried running it down on electric only but I doubt that it will do much more than 10. I have easily gone 30+ with pedaling and would be bored going more than a mile without pedaling anyway so for me, that range isn't a major issue. I have managed to kill the battery, though, and it's not much fun at that point but it's totally rideable until you can get it home to recharge.

Performance and handling: Because of the size, weight, and frame, it doesn't handle like my other bikes at all. I still need to get used to it, but I find the steering twitchy. You will be able to maintain a speed of 20+ mph easily with modest pedaling. Because I'm used to working much harder to maintain that speed on my road bike, I don't feel like I'm moving fast at all, though. I bottom out the pedals without leaning very hard so you have to learn not to pedal through turns. The front disk brake works fine. I try not to need it so I can't say if it's any better than your typical caliper brakes.

Recharge: From fully discharged the battery will fully recharge overnight. I haven't timed it but for me that's fast enough. The battery is detachable so you can bring it inside to recharge while leaving the bike outside. The Li batteries should good for at least a year or two of daily use so presumably by the time they need replacing, replacement prices will be down significantly.

Workmanship: Very robust frame that feels like it will last forever. The components are decent but not great. I believe they are standard components so they should be easy to replace if you're not satisfied or when they wear out.

Other: The headlight is not very bright so I would still use another light source. I have a headlight on my helmet. My bike came assembled by the dealer and I understand it's not that difficult to do yourself. Having said that, the dealer did a crappy job of assembling and I had to tighten and fix what he did after about 25 miles of riding.

Overview: As my typical bike ride is 30 miles, this bike doesn't do a lot to extend my range. And because of its size and weight it requires a bit of planning if you want to use it on a trip in conjunction with public transportation. However, it does as advertised and can be a lot of fun, too. I enjoy breezing past the spandex clad crowd on their skinny tires. The bike comes with almost everything you need, you just need a helmet if you don't already own one. In addition, gloves and an alternate headlight are recommended. For those of you who have a commute that doesn't involve train or bus, this bike makes a lot of sense. It's great if you wanted to use it to replace car/train/bus trips and can save you a lot of money as an alternative to those forms of transportation. Where I live, it would probably take less than half a year to break even. It's an enjoyable way to arrive at your destination and you won't even be sweaty at the end. With the included rack, it's great for making modest shopping trips or getting your takeout order. So I'm decently satisfied and will probably hang on to it for many years.
