With the third (and reportadly final) X-Men film on the horizon, let the marketing blitz begin! With the X-Men 3 game hitting every platform, it's surprising to see it on the GBA, and it's even more surprising that the game isn't actually half bad. Looking more like the 16-bit side scrolling licensed games that Acclaim made famous back in the day, X-Men 3: The Official Game features a plethora of levels, bosses, and the ability to play as Wolverine, Iceman, Nightcrawler (who gets unlocked as you progress), and as a GBA exclusive, fan favorite X-man Colossus. The game's storyline takes place between X2: X-Men United and X-Men: The Last Stand as you go back to the destroyed base in Alkali Lake to find pieces of Cerebro. As you make your way through the game, you'll take on assorted armed guards, robots, and even some Sentinels. There's boss battles aplenty, including Toad (who pops up frequently), Sabretooth, Juggernaut, Mystique, Madrox the Multiple Man, Stryker in a big mech suit, and Marvel's new "it" character, the X-23 as well. The graphics look solid and slick for a GBA game, and the music is nicely done as well. The controls are easy, and the gameplay is as well, even though it is too easy for it's own good. Despite that, X-Men 3: The Official Game is a surprisingly good side scrolling licensed beat 'em up, and for those still holding on to their GBA's, this is worth checking out.
