The idea is great. When I first put them in (3) they worked great then two of them started coming on by them selves. When I did a little checking on line it would seem this is quite common. So far I have only had problems with this type of switch, so I am thinking of changing them to the XPS3 which requires a neutral wire, but it seems to be a more heavy duty & reliable switch.

I've got a couple of these installed throughout my home. Takes only a minute to install and they work great. To be honest, I've only installed these into places where I didn't want to use the wall switch. So I can't vouch for the usability of the swtich itself. I use the remote to control the switches. These switches do dim, and they return to that same dimmed level after you turn on/off. These will work with your existing faceplate for a traditional wall switch.

We bought 2 of these to use with a remote control device. Both switches stopped working all together after less than 1 week. They could not even be operated manually! We are not sure of where to go from here, but we are loathe to buy 2 more and try again.

These same exact switches have been around for well over a decade with no noticeable advancements whatsoever. X10, as a whole, works great if your house (or the power coming in to your house) has no electrical interference at all, which is basically impossible. I've spent hundreds of dollars installing filters, phase couplers, repeaters, amplifiers, and even a sub-panel exclusively for use with my X10 equipment and it is still not reliable.

Sure, one switch might work great here and there, but then comes the problems. One day the switch won't turn on, the next it might not dim properly, and then next it may just do something by itself. If you're just looking for something to use as a hobby type of device, X10 is fine. But just plan on about 75% reliability at best. Over the years I've owned dozens of switches, as well as some plugs, modules, sockets, etc. After trying to do a commercial install starting from scratch with new electrical wiring, I finally just gave up and sold every last unit I've ever purchased.

Please, take my advice, just bite the bullet and spend the extra money on something like INSTEON devices!

This item is obsolete. It works only with incandescent lamps which are no longer manufactured. Even if you still happen to use incandescent lamps in your house, the days are numbered as far as this switch working properly for you. I had to remove a dozen of these from my house and replace. Get the new Insteaon versions which are backwards compatible with X10 or consider switching to zwave (zwave is unfortunately not compatible with x10 so you'd be starting over.)

Modules as shipped (1) Did not switch on and off, would only go from off to bright gradually and down from bright to off gradually like slow dimmers and only if the button was held down for the duration 2) Did not respond to standard whole-house BSR X-10 central control boxes (2) that are active at this location for other BSR X-10 devices currently (3) Did not respond to the BSR X-10 burglar alarm interface module that takes input Form-C dry contact closure from the alarm system and switches X-10 devices on as part of the alarm response. The remaining X-10 devices present at this location continue to respond to the alarm interface module as required. Conclusion: The modules as advertised are imitation BSR X-10 with appropriate cases and zone and device adjuster settings per OE X-10 modules, but do not function other than as dimmer switches for incandescent lights when the buttons are held down. They have absolutely no remote capabilities nor are they able to turn loads on and off with momentary depression of the switch buttons. I advise any other potential purchasers to avoid this marketing chain and if needed, only order one device for testing before placing a more extensive order. This transaction has been written off as a college course in Internet Business Practices 101.

These work great. I have 3 lights that I control. These lights have switches that are in different rooms. I have 2 wall control switches located in 2 different rooms in central locations. They both can control these 3 light switches. My lights are outside and I like to be able to turn them on for visitors or for outside adtivities without going to the garage or downstairs to where the switches are located. With the remote switch, I can control them from our bedroom or from the kitchen. Love them.

I am using this swith to control in-pool lighting. Price was fair and shipping was on-time. This was a replacement job. Installation was simple and the new switch fit perfectly in place and worked exactly as I expected it to. I now control my pool light and (on a separate switch) my landscape lights from the X10 PRO controller at my BBQ counter.
