A good play for X-Fans,
By
This review is from: X2: Wolverine's Revenge (Xbox) (CD-ROM)
This is the sort of game that I like to see people making from the X-Men universe. The game focuses on an interesting character and explores his history while still presenting plenty of action and stealth challenges. One of the things I liked most about the game was the different approaches you could take. You can choose to sneak around and kill your opponents from the shadows or you can go all out and attack in a fury of claws. Either way you're bound to have a good time. This is also the only game so far where the player has full access to all of Wolverine's abilites. It was very enjoyable to use his hightened senses and his healing factor was well represented as a steadily recharging health bar. The voice acting and story were well done and there are plenty of fun extras to be unlocked, too. My only real complaint about the game that keeps me from giving it five stars is the extreem increase in difficulity about half-way through. The game suddenly gets really, really hard and some of the mission objectives are unclear. Hopefully future games will keep more of a balance of the appropriate challenges from the first half of the game without the frustrating difficulity of the second half. All in all, though, this is a great buy for X-Men fans and fans of adventure games.

X2 Wolverine's Revenge os a wolverines solo adventure where you get to play the ultimate living weapon and world's toughest x-Men member. As the adventure unfolds, you have many choices to make. What tactics will you employ to succeed-Stealth or all-out action? where will use your heightened senses to find clues about how to progress? The choices are all yours to make, WOLVERINE!! now this Game is cool for Wolverine's Fans or X-Men Fans it is better than Spiderman and one of the best activision Games, but some levels in the game gets harder. The best there is at what he does,

I've noticed something about all the solo wolverine games I've played. All of them have something to do with the Weapon X project. This one, though, is the best. It starts out at the Weapon X base in 1968, and shows Wolverine escaping. Fast-foreward 30 years. The Shiva virus, lieing dormant until now, has infected him and Logan has 48 hours to find the cure. The implementation of this game is great. The Customizable soundtrack option is(ofcourse) and XBox exclusive, is golden. The implementation of steath, the healing factor, and the multiple costumes is perfection. And the character voices. Mark Hamill does a wonderful job as wolverine, much better than Hugh Jackman. And who better than Patrick Stewart to do Xavier. The dialoge is true to the characters(the line "Security is tighter than one of Jean's outfits" fits so well), all because Larry Hama, former writer of the Wolverine comic, wrote the story. My only complaint is the fact that if this game is comic based (look at logan's conversation with magneto late in the game), why is Colossus there? He's supposed to be dead. All in all, If you want to BE the best there is at what he does, this is deffinately worth your money.

This game gets a bad rap that I don't quite understand. The performances by both Hamill and Stewart and great- the storyline is high energy- there are even some fun cameo appearances from various X-Men.
The stealth abilities of this game are its highlight, and collecting dog tags for downed soldiers through this mode is really fun. The levels are very long, though- and sometimes the bosses are unbelievably difficult. Saves are few and far between, making it stressful to replay levels- but overall, this is a really fun game, definitely worth the $10 you'll probably pay for it.

3 out of five means you get a game that is good wholesome fun with enough phat little touches it keeps pulling you back.its a bit scary to start with as your thrown in at the deep end having woken from a mad experiment being carried out on our star of the peice James Howlet / Logan / Wolverine. its pretty much action from the start, the entire game balances all out action with patient stealth sections. this is a solid game, the control mechanism is simple enough, visuals are as expected for a next gen game. add to this a very well used lisence incorperating voice talents from the movie ( although Logan is voiced by mark 'luke skywalker' hamill, and he is a good choice) with the right talent from marvel making it feel as true to the comics as it has to be. Then theres the phat stuff. Logan can use his mutant senses with the pull of a trigger, this allows you to see further, smell people, see warm footprints and most coolly stealth moves! i dont want to spoil it for you so i'll finish with a simple......its wolverine jim, and thankfully just how we'd like it. HAVE FUN. oh... nearly forgot xbox extra, listen to costom soudtracks while playing the entire game.....

Some major flaws even Logan can't heal...,

This review is from: X2: Wolverine's Revenge (Xbox) (CD-ROM)
First of all, let it be known I am a big Wolverine fan (ask me to show you my Wolverine tattoo sometime...), so I may be too critical.Things I was pleased about -- Mark Hamill (also known as Luke Skywalker, or the voice of The Joker in the Batman animated series)performs the voice of Wolverine...Very good! Patrick Stewart also handles the voice of Professor X. In general, the voice-overs of this game are fantastic, as is the storyline. However this is the best part of the game, and the rest really needs work. I felt like I was playing a beta version of this game. As others have stated, there is a tremendous amount of clipping. Clipping is when people and objects suddenly fall through walls, get stuck, or inexplicably die. Also, the levels are VERY long, and there is no way to save during a level. So plan on spending 30 minutes navigating a level, and if you die, you are gonna need 30 minutes all over again... The game is still very fun though -- I wish that Activision had taken more time to polish things up. I hope there is a sequel planned, so they can address the issues and improve the Wolverine experience...

The X-Men have been getting robbed of a truly excellent X-men title over the course of the last few years with the last truly great game to feature Marvel's Merry Mutants was Marvel Vs Capcom 2on the Dreamcast, (Recently ported to PS2 and Xbox.) Even in the Playstation/N64/Dreamcast era the X-men were not used outside of fighter games at all. This is the first non-fighter X-men game for a major console for a very long time, and it looked very good, and was very well advertised as well. I rarely get so X-cited about a game that I preorder it, but I did preorder this one. Mark Hammel (Luke Skywalker) doing the voice of Wolverine... I had to see this! And he was good! Very good! The voice-overs of this game are fantastic, as is the storyline. However this is the best part of the game, and the rest really needs work, and bad. While this game is light years better than X-men: Next Dimension it still lacks a great deal of polish that a delay of a month or so could have addressed. My biggest complaint being clipping. Clipping is when people and objects fall through walls, and things like that. To me, it's irritating, and an eye sore. The other major complaint I have is the unresponsive buttons, but that may be the fault of the Xbox controller itself. It seems that I have to hit buttons much harder on games that do not implement pressure sensitivity into the game play mechanics to get the characters to do anything. The animation could have also been better; it's pretty choppy, even though the frame rate seems fairly steady for the most part. The cut scenes are very hard for me to watch because the animation is so bad at times. On the plus side, the camera is almost 100% controlled by the player, and that makes it easy to position just where I want it. The music is very event oriented and works well, and if you don't like it there's custom tracks. The game is still very fun though; it's just that I wish that Activision had taken more time to polish this title up. Improving the enemy AI, improving the stealth functionality, and button responsiveness, and eliminating the clipping would have helped this game immensely. It has five stars potential, but in my opinion wasn't quite ready for shipment when it shipped. Hopefully there will be a sequel where they will address the issues that this installment has. As with most of the cross platform games the Xbox version is the best, with GameCube second best (Frame rate issues), and Playstation 2 (Aliasing or jagged edges on top of the clipping problem) looking the worst, but despite its poor animation the character models for this game are actually pretty good, so the differences between the three versions are minimal.

The game sucks because it starts you at the beginning of the level when you die. There are no checkpoints, so when you die, you won't start where you left off. You start at the damn beginning, which makes it a boring and annoying game.

I'm not a comic book fan by any means. I just don't think it's my cup of tea personally. That being said, however, I have heard about the X-Men over the years and think that they're yet another wonderful group of superheros to spring forth from the mind of the great Stan Lee. And right here, we have "X2: Wolverine's Revenge," Wolverine's debut in both a 3D format and a sixth-generation console, and despite some frustrations that can get on your nerves, it's a real blast to play. The story focuses on Wolverine learning that the "Shiva" virus implanted inside him during his time at the Weapon X program has activated and, despite his mutant healing ability, will kill him in 2 days. He must journey back to Weapon X to find out how to make the antidote, then gather the ingrediants and absorb it to kill the virus. Along the way, Wolverine faces off against classic X-Men villians Sabertooth, Wendigo, Juggernaut, Magneto, and Lady Deathstrike.
The game is a mixture of open, hand-to-hand combat and stealth. One of the good things about this game is that the developers, "GenePool Software," made it so you can play using any style you want, and the structure to that is really tight. Your basic move set stays the same throughout the game, but you can take advantage of the "dog tag" system, which ties in with the stealth. Should you go through the game sneaking around and steath-killing enemies, you're awarded dog tags for each kill. If you obtain a certain number of them, you unlock "strike moves"; if 2 or 3 enemies are in a specific position, you can press buttons which will cause you to attack all of them at the same time. There's four levels of these in total. At the beginning of the game, you only have Level 1 moves, which will kill weaker enemies, but only wound stronger ones. The more dog tags you collect, the more levels you open up, which causes the strike moves to be deadlier and more visually fantastic. This way, the game encourages you to play it stealthy for the first half of the game so you'll have the deadliest strike moves for the really tough enemies later on. All of Wolverine's powers are on display here, and using all of them is crucial to your success. The regenerative healing powers restore you back to full health after a really nasty fight. The adamantium claws cut through your enemies with deadly force. The mutant sense, perhaps the most useful power in the whole game, is a stealth mode that turns the environment a dull tan, highlights enemies in red, and places arrows over their heads to show which way they're looking. Coupled with a crouch manuever that allows you to move relatively fast but completely silent, and you have a way of rapidly silencing enemies without them even knowing you're there. You really get the feeling that you're Wolverine and are the best at what he does, which is very true. As with all the positives, there are bound to be some negatives, which there are. Without a doubt, the biggest problem for me is the lack of a checkpoint system. If you die on a mission, you have to restart all the way from the beginning, which is bullcrap. You could be just about to the exit point and then you die, forcing you to redo it all over again. Your healing power doesn't do much to help you when you've got lasers, automated turrets, cannons, and huge robots firing at you non-stop. Just a sporadic checkpoint system or a quicksave feature would've greatly reduced the frustration. As for the other stuff, it's minor, but noticeable. Enemies with guns immediatly lose track of you when you round a corner, but when you knock it out of their hands, they know exactly where you are at all times. The few turret sequences are a pain because you have no way of getting out of the turret until you destroy your assigned target; therefore enemies can tear you to bits. Out of all the big bosses, Magneto is the worst of them, because he flies around all over the place using ranged attacks, where the others, including the very last one in the game, are ground-based and fairly easy to defeat if you use the right strategies. Still, I wish Wolverine had some sort of ranged attack he could use on enemies instead of always having to close the distance to fight them hand-to-hand while they're firing guns. Lastly, the sounds are kinda annoying and repetitive. The enemies all utter the same coughing groan when you kill them and Wolverine roars in the same tone over and over again when he gets hit. Some variation would've made the audio experience a lot more pleasant. The graphics on display here are a mixed bag. As always, they look the best on Xbox. There's no dynamic lighting that moves; it's all preset and static. Characters look more animated than usual and there's tons of instances where body parts clip through objects. That all being said, however, this game has some of the best weather effects I've ever seen in a game; the snow and wind blowing across and hitting the screen when you're outside never gets old. The pitch-black underground mines you travel through are really creepy, Weapon X abounds with all sorts of twisted experiments gone wrong, and fires cast everything in an orange glow. So, despite the rough edges with the characters and physics, the environments are really immersive and keep you tuned in to the experience. In the end, "Wolverine's Revenge" is an awesome game with an awesome story unique to video games that could definitly happen in the X-Men world. It's a shame it's so unnoticed; despite the problems that plague it, there's a thrilling adventure to be had, with diverse gameplay to provide much enjoyment. Wolverine definitly impressed me; he couldn't have come crashing into the 3D gamescape with a bigger bang! RRaaarrrr!!!

Ok game, some flaws,

This game suffers from the same flaws that Indiana Jones for the Xbox suffers, no in level saves. So if you die at the end, you start all over at the start of the level. Also, Mr. Fleenor, if you pull in your claws, Woverine heals at a rapid rate. But as a whole, rent, do not buy this. It is worth a look but not worth [$$$] |
