4.0 out of 5 stars Gold Edition = Gold Standard February 24, 2010
Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
To be blunt, this game shows what can be accomplished in the video game industry. This feels like a labor of love. It isn't a quick sit down and shoot up some bad guys for a few minutes type of game. This is more for people who want to sit down and totally immerse themselves in a massive universe.

This one is a rarity. This one you don't play; you experience.

Across the top of the box it reads "Trade Fight Build Think". It delivers on those promises in spades. Highest praise and I would not hesitate to recommend this title to anyone interested in the genre. What put the icing on the cake was the fact that I was not familiar with the franchise and bought it out of desperation to find something, anything that would actually install on my PC. To discover such a gem made me forget about the problems I was having with a couple other titles.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not your kid's video game... October 4, 2010

Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
If you want a game that takes you by the hand and leads you to its finish, do not buy this game. If you are looking for instant gratification and a game you can complete in a couple of days worth of 15 minute sessions, do NOT buy this game. If you are easily frustrated and don't want to invest time with economics, strategy and long range goals, DO NOT BUY THIS GAME. If you ARE looking to lose some sleep planning your empire, building fleets and the logistic means to support them, exploring a huge galaxy with many races and many paths to victory, being an industrialist, a pirate, a simple explorer or all of the above then check this game out. You won't be disappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing.... January 30, 2010

This is more for the hardcore player. Solo equivalent to Eve Online. Incredibly in depth. Build your own stations, trade, combat, epic fleet battles.....This game has it all! Death is always just around an asteroid so make sure and save often.

If you have time to be incredibly addicted to a video game and experience a game that will ruin all other games you're currently playing....this is it!

4.0 out of 5 stars A good investment July 28, 2011
Fun: 4.0 out of 5 stars
The sheer enormity of this game makes it possible to play...well, pretty much infinitely. And I don't mean RE-playability. I've put over 60 hours into the X universe and have gotten about 20% of the way to where I want to be. I leave it for a while, sometimes to play another game, and then come back to it months later. You just keep going back to it, again and again, because it's just so fun. And so addicting.

Fond memories of Wing Commander: Privateer? This is your game. Enjoy strategic fleet-versus-fleet RTS battles? This is your game. Love micromanaging resources and building an empire through trade? This is your game. Want to rain destruction down upon the universe and obliterate the vengeful militias that pursue you? This is your game. The beauty of this game is that you can do as much or as little of anything as you want. If you never want to get in a fight, you can avoid pirates and predators. If you never want to bother trading, you don't have to. You can have a thousand ships or one ship. It's all up to you.

For newcomers, I'd actually go straight for Terran Conflict and skip X3: Reunion altogether. While X3: Reunion has a better (I mean, existent) storyline, X3: Terran Conflict has some features that just make it more fun. In particular, I like the addition of the ability to train marines or mercenaries and capture capital ships. It's also easier to find missions, and missions that are of interest to you, by looking at the icons posted by space stations instead of having to dock and check the station's boards. Trust me when I say that you won't "play through" either of these games, so it's best just to focus on one.

In terms of gameplay hours per dollar, I don't think it's possible to get a better value than the X universe.

4.0 out of 5 stars Beware: this game is addicting January 23, 2011

One of the first things this game's manual tells you is, "Say goodbye to a social life and/or sleep." This couldn't be truer! After I started playing this game, some of my friends thought I died because I became so engrossed in it. This game is very much like a solo version of EVE Online, which has its merits and its drawbacks. On the plus side, you don't have to share the universe with other real players, so you're free to progress at your own pace and you don't have to worry about griefers. On the bad side, the AI just can't ever pose the kind of challenge a real player ever would. The game's story itself, while interesting, doesn't really pull you in as much as it could. I found it much more fun to just do my own thing and ignore the game's story unless the rewards were worth my time (which is rare). There's a plethora of unofficial mods on the game's official forum that also make great additions to this game, and if you don't care about posting your gamer stats on their rankings web site, I strongly recommend trying them out because I think they make the game MUCH better.

My complaints about this game are few and far between. Pathing can be pretty bad and I've lost track of how many times I've crashed into asteroids or stations while auto-piloting. During large fleet engagements, the game can get very laggy and take away from the awesome experience of watching two giant fleets blow each other to smithereens (even on a good gaming computer). My biggest complaint, which is a complaint shared by myself and all of my friends who have played it since I started, is that the game literally throws you into the universe with little to no guidance.

This is a fun "little" game. This is my second copy as my original vanished during a move. I love sandbox style games and this one gives you a large area to explore.
