This sampler is a real mixed bag, but at the price (free!) is certainly worth picking up.

One of the main draws is "My Old Flame" by Miles Davis (with Sonny Rollins) from the 1951 LP "Dig". This track actually wasn't on the first 10" version of the record, but was added later as an extra when it was released as a 12". This is a nice, slow moody track. But the recording shows its age, and remastering on this track appears to be minimal. Sonny Rollins also turns in a nice improvisational track with "Just in Time", from his 1957 album "The Sound of Sonny".

Peggy Lee's "The Lady is a Tramp" is a classic -- and is quite possibly the song that got her the job acting and singing in the Disney movie "The Lady and the Tramp". It's fast and fun, but again a track that doesn't seem to show much remastering.

"Old Devil Moon" is a brash, brass-laden track from Lena Horne. The song was a big hit from the Broadway musical Finian's Rainbow, and here Ms Horne turns in a strong performance that reminded me a little of Shirley Bassey.

I don't know that they are "Jazz Legends", but the Swedish Radio Jazz Group puts in a fair performance on the medium-paced, laid back track "Yaoundé", which for some reason is named after the capital of Cameroon, although it doesn't sound particularly Cameroonian. This track is OK, but is really the odd man out in the set.

There isn't much cohesiveness in this collection -- all the tracks are totally different stylistically. But there are some nice pieces here. Recommended.

This is a no brainer, even to those who don't dig classic jazz at all (especially the 'smooth jazz' heads, who don't have a clue,OK)? The title explains it all,JAZZ LEGENDS,whose likeness we might not ever see again,as it's the new classical,so get in,it's free, see?
right-on/rock-on\m/!
