Firstly if you know nothing about computers or you assume this is simply plug and play.. then you are wrong.. just buy an Apple TV.. on the other hand if you are even mildly technically inclined.. have the willingness, time and patience to dedicate to this box, then you are in for a pleasant surprise the things you can accomplish with the powerful hardware inside this machine are virtually limitless.. first step is to upgrade to the latest firmware otherwise this box is very buggy and unstable.. now you have a blank canvas to create a media powerhouse or any other project.. this box is also very easy to root.. most negative feedback or comments are left out of frustration resulting from lack of knowledge.. Good luck.. :D

The title about sums it up. I received the X7 Mini with firmware version 6. The initial problems were that the wireless signal was not stable and Bluetooth would breakup to the point of not being usable for playing music. My wireless mouse worked well, but the wireless keyboard was not interpreted correctly by the system and couldn’t be used. Other than that the X7 Mini was fairly speedy in opening apps and good at streaming SD and 720P video with standard XBMC. I used the remote some and it was ok. Later I was able to flash firmware version 8 after many attempts. This seemed to stabilize the wireless and fix the Bluetooth, as long as the router or Bluetooth receiver are in the same room. In my setup the router is on the next floor up and wireless signal is too weak to get download speeds above 5 Mbps and sometimes less. I switched to using the X7’s Ethernet to a wireless bridge and was able to get good and stable download speeds up to 10 Mbps. However, with the new firmware XBMC seems to crash after a few minutes of streaming video. Also, the Power Icon would put the device to sleep with the original firmware, but with the newer version it will just restarts and goes to the home screen over and over. I have not checked out the Miracast feature yet. I feel that the X7 Mini makes a good project to play around with, but I don’t believe that it is worth the price. And it is sure not “plug and play”.

This is a great product, however the certified MINIX seller does not sell the most up to date models. For example, new Neo X7's are supposed to come with the newest version of XBMC for MINIX. You have to download it yourself on your computer, extract the files, load to USB drive and manually install a shell and start from there.

I have tried many of these TV "support boxes" over the past few years and this is the best one so far. Previously the Logitech Revue had been my box of choice but it was aging fast.

The combination of features that I need from a box like this, which has not easy to come by, is the following:
- Good and flexible media player for files from the NAS drive (movies, photos, songs)
- Simple but good games for my kids
- Ability to connect to my Slingbox on the other side of the Atlantic
- Ability to run the predominant TV player app in this country
- Weather info on the main screen

For me, the overarching criteria are as follows:
- Open platform, not proprietary -> check
- Access to an unrestricted library of apps -> check
- No unnecessary device criteria that rule out a lot of apps (with Google TV that had been the case) -> check; by far most apps that work on a tablet work here
- No weird and ugly custom user interfaces -> check
- Reasonable price -> check

The remote is not bad but you will definitely need a proper wireless keyboard.

My only (small) complaint is that I have not been able to figure out how to increase the font size on the user interface. The labels are bit tough to read sometimes. Changing font settings did not do the trick. But I am hoping I will figure out a solution to this.

I use DNLA Wild Media Server to stream music, movies and pictures from a server to my smart TV. I was looking to watch movies in my office on a smaller TV. I connected the MiniX and in just 20 minuets I was watching movies from my server. It took so long because I had a problem with my network switch. Once I connected it to my wireless router everything came on line. I like it so much, I plan on purchasing another one for use in my garage.

Background: I run a small IT shop and sell a few models of Android based streaming media players that I custom configure and provide support for. That being said I have done a lot of research on what products to sell and direct comparison between different models for both a hardware and firmware stand point.

Review:
I love the MINIX Neo X7 Mini, this little box is exactly the same size as an Apple TV (2nd-3rd Gen) and works like a charm. The quad core CPU and GPU provide all of the horsepower you could ever need to produce a smooth, snappy and enjoyable experience.

Keep in mind what you are ordering when you purchase this box however, it will look and feel just like an Android tablet when you first connect it to your TV. In this aspect I think MINIX needs to make some improvements to the firmware to include a much more user and TV friendly launcher. I highly suggest that you get the box connected to the internet add your Google account and immediately install the TV Launcher app (Free to try, $5) here is the link: [...]

Using this launcher will completely change the experience and truly make the box ready for prime time on you big screen.

My only other reason for the 4 star rating is the wireless performance on these is not quite what I would expect out an 802.11n connection. I'm pretty sure this is just due to an undersized and under powered antenna. If you have no hard wire option and your router is more then 30-50 feet away I would get the Neo X7 with a powered external antenna.

I use both at home at the moment an X7 mini in my bedroom and an X7 in the living room and I have absolutely no issues with either box, but my router is very close to the mini and the X7 connects to my beam forming 802.
