Fun, Addictive, and Challenging,

The makers of the Total War series have released Spartan: Total Warrior as their venture into the genre of hack and slash games. Spartan sees the player assuming the role of a lone warrior who is fighting in the Spartan army against the invading Roman assault. The game's premise is simple, move from objective to objective while killing TONS of characters. The game can support literally hundreds of characters on screen at once. The player must use a blend of offensive and defensive tactics to survive. If you play on the hard difficulty, prepare to be humbled. Button mashing will get you nowhere. Even though this is a hack and slash game, the player will need to master the shield and proper spacing of enemies before attacking or you will become swarmed and overwhelmed. Once these basic concepts are mastered, the game becomes extremely fun. The battles and levels are epic in scale and you really feel like you are thrust into battle due to the great atmosphere. The game does suffer from poor voice acting and wierd music choices (ie techno during some battle scenes). The combat at times can seem somewhat repetitive, but the variety of melee and mounted weaponry somewhat eliminates this. Overall, Spartan is a great and fun game. The difficulty is challenging, but not imposssible so most gamers can jump into it. The levels have some good variety and the bosses present a fun challenge. I would recommend this game to action adventure fans who are looking for a new twist on an old genre.

This was one of my favorite games from the origonal xbox. I was really excited to get it and play it again but found that it is not compatible with the xbox360. It was a let down but i should have looked into it before paying the money for it. Just to give warning and help keep others from making the same mistake. This game as of now in october of 2010 it is not compatible with xbox 360. just incase a new update comes out sometime soon to fix it.

I've played this game before on my old ps2 and got stuck right at the last boss. Long story short, I moved, things got lost/left behind and this game disappeared. But after so many other games, I kept coming back to this one because it was unbelievably frustrating but just made me want to play it that much more, a true challenge.
The game shipped fast, the game was fine. Had a few issues finding the software for my xbox to run this old game, but that's not the fault of anyone, just incredibly irritating to work through. Fun times to be had.

Spartan was a game that was under-appreciated. While It's Graphics were a Sad PS2 port, the story was very well written. If You like fighting tons of people a la Dynasty Warriors, but with a better story, then this is the Game for You. This game is one that should be in alot of people's collections.

Repetitive Gameplay,

Previous reviewers have hit most of the major descriptive points: lots of warriors, average graphics, simplistic objectives, etc. But one thing I think needs to be stressed is the *repetitive* nature of this game. You will find yourself seemingly fighting the same battle over and over and over again, sometimes because you died but mostly because there just isn't any variety in the game play. You just keep on fighting, surrounded by warriors and mashing buttons in an extremely limited combo system. And the characters will keep yelling the same lines at you over and over and over, until even a patient player can't help but be frustrated. (If I hear "They're attacking the gate!" one more time, the game disc might end up in my fireplace.)
Another annoying thing is the AI... for example, you will be charged with a simple objective such as "protect the prisoners," and then the unarmed prisoners will run headlong into an army of enemy soldiers as if they are unaware that the soldiers are trying to kill them. Often, whether or not you advance to the next objective/level is half button-mashing and half dumb luck. That's not to say this game is *completely* terrible... there is a certain excitement that comes with the speed and simplicity with which you can dispatch your enemies. But, after slaying your 1,000th poorly-rendered enemy clone, it won't take long before you tire of the repetitive game play. The bottom line: if at all possible, rent this game or play it at a friend's house; you won't be sorry that it isn't in your collection.

This game was so over hyped it even got a behind the scenes show on g4tv. Now I wanted 2 play this game cuz well, I being an xbox owner, wanted a good romp like god of war since I already finished ninja gaiden. This game leaves me feeling; like something is missing... it could have been so much more. Let me give u my reviews.
Graphics 7/10:They focused on cramming a huge amount of enemies on screen at the same time which is cool sometimes but when u look at the cut scenes and bland areas. YUCK is this really xbox?. But it's not totally horrid. Sound 7.5/10: When I listen to the excellence god of war soundtrack and ninja gaiden's soundtrack I can't help but think the corny rock tracks playing here was jus tacked on. The weapon sounds are nice clangs and clashes. Then we get to the voice acting um no no this simply will not do. These have got 2 be the worse directed voice acting ever. Game play: Well as much as they hyped it 2 be it's just a basic hack and slasher, which is fine if u like that genre. The weapons in the game although are pretty cool... they jus don't seem 2 carry any real weight with them. I mean when I play the other top 2 action adventure games, ninja gaiden and god of war I really do feel like I'm causing bodily harm 2 folks. The action in Spartan jus feels real muted. The tons of enemies are cool...but when they all surround u alone and u can't find a power up it becomes frustrating. Control 5/10: The controls are adequate u got ur light slash and heavy. But The bow control is totally wack!! The camera is controlled by the right thumb stick which I personally don't like 2 much cuz it can become disorienting. The overall control feels like it's stuck between pc mouse control and console controller style... I don't like it that much. All in all if it seems like I keep bringing up Ninja Gaiden and God of War.... I must use them 2 compare, because those are now the measuring stick by which these games will all be compared, ESPECIALLY Ninja Gaiden. I understand they were trying the huge battles and what not...which I think is real cool. But it could have been better in other departments.

Only thing worse than the gameplay...,

is the absurd storyline. The game mixes actual historic figures (such as Crassus, Tiberius, and Sejanus) with mythical ones (such as Castor, Pollux, and Medusa) without much regard to historical fact. This would be fine except that I have come to expect a lot more from CA. The game should be entitled Spartan: Total Anachronism.
I would gladly overlook that fact if the game was, erm, actually fun to play. Thats the problem, because Spartan: Total Warrior, for all its gee-whiz graphics and speedy gameplay, is missing on a critical gameplay element: fun. The manual talks a big game about the "tactical" elements of the game, but your tactics in large part consist of button mashing at location A, sprinting to more button mashing at location B, then rushing back to location A for (you guessed it) MORE button mashing. On top of that, Spartan Total Warrior offers you numerous opportunities to exercise your abilities to hunt in vain for small glowing circles in order to activiate certain game effects. Want to fire a catapult? Find the glowy. Want to dump oil? Find the glowy? Want to spear a gorgon? You guessed it, find a glowy. This wouldn't be so bad, except that the glowy is hidden away under 30 enemy clones, you are never shown where its located prior to the game start, you can't just *look* for it without being swarmed, and the game will not permit camera movement while paused. Annoyed yet? I sure am. Do you like the idea of acquiring interesting loot with which to squash your enemies? Too bad, because Spartan Total: Warrior offers only a handful of remarkably similar items with which to dispatch your foes. Do I want the weapon with the white effect, or the red effect. Gee, some how I don't seem to care. Oh, and just to make sure the last element of fun is squeezed out, Spartan: Total Warrior is kind enough to impose restrictive time limits. When are game developers going to learn that timed levels are stupid? What is this Super Mario Brothers? Thanks but I'll take actual suspense (like when you find out the main twist in KOTOR, for example) to simulated expense any day of the week. Meh, this game just falls flat. It simply isn't any fun. The idea is cool, and the graphics are good, but that is about the extent of the game's positive attributes. If you really want to slaughter hordes of enemies in a quasi historical world (and I use that term extremely loosely), just stick with Dynasty Warriors and the like. If you just want to destroy your foes and have fun in the process, then perhaps try Return of the King. Either way PLEASE PLEASE RENT THIS GAME BEFORE YOU BUY IT. Otherwise you could end up like me and have a $50 dollar game you will never play collecting dust on your DVD rack. |
