5.0 out of 5 stars Holy Crap!
I can run Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising at the full settings!!!! With my old dual Nvidia 7600gt's I could barely run it on 800X600.
It is a great card so far!
FYI - it is a HUGE card. It takes up a lot of space. Thing is probably about 10 inches long.
Also, it wants dual 6 pin plugs straight from your power supply to run. If you don't have those I...

4.0 out of 5 stars Price+Power [Good] - Heat+Sound [Bad], December 2, 2009

This review is from: XFX HD487AZWFC Radeon HD 4870 1 GB DDR5 PCI-E 2.0 (Personal Computers)
I replaced my old GeForce 7600 GT with this card in order to keep up with the times. I've never bought a Radeon card before, and I remembered why almost immediately after I installed it. The card ran ridiculously hot with just stock cooling. I understand I only had 1 top case fan - intake and 1 side case fan - exhaust (then there is also the CPU fan/GPU fan). The card was at 70°C IDLE. Yes it was very hot. I ran Crysis on Max settings for about 10 minutes until artifacts kicked in and everything froze. The card was at 99°C when it restarted.

I moved the fan up a couple PCI-E slots and rigged a new side fan right next to the card [intake] because there's a nice opening in the bottom of my case that would allow airflow. After putting this on and manually setting the fan speed [Using CCC] to 100% - I can run Crysis [Max] at about 70°C - 80°C 100% Load, I get around 30-40FPS. The addition of a new 120mm fan along side the 100% GPU fan is very loud. I can bare the loud noises but I know there's people out there who can't.

Mind you I don't blame Radeon for this I blame myself for having less-than-sufficient cooling in my computer. Just make sure you have this under control.

PROS:
*Very powerful [Able to run anything I threw at it on Max - Crysis, NFS:Shift,WoW]
*Inexpensive!
*Nice overclocking features using CCC - I haven't overclocked I just know it would be very easy if I wanted to.

CONS:
*Runs hot [Just make sure you have good cooling/air-flow and you will be fine]
*Fan speed does not reach 100% on automatic when you get ~100°C, which is ridiculous, therefore you have to keep setting it yourself if you need it.

My Specs:
CPU: Intel Core i7-920 Bloomfield 2.66GHz
GPU: G.SKILL 3GB (3 x 1GB) (PC3 10666) Triple Channel
CASE: APEVIA X-CRUISER-BK Black Steel ATX Mid
HDD: Western Digital VelociRaptor 150GB 10000 RPM
MOBO: Foxconn Renaissance

Good card, crossfire cable is kinda short for proper placement for good airflow in crossfire mode. Had to buy thermalright heatsinks to rectify the overheating problems. This also made it a lot quieter and cooler by ditching the stock cooling system. I paid $220 for my original 4870 card and only paid $165 for this one. Almost doubled my avg fps in warhammer 40k. Went from 47fps to 89fps avg on ultimate settings at 1920x1080p.

Received item even before promised date. Item was deliverd in perfect conditions. This is a wonderful video card. Is actually giving me the best output I've seen till now. Yes it is an older product but the price/perfomance value is very hard to beat. Technology is not that old neither. This is still one of the top video cards around. New or older technology is relative, what counts is performance. Can newer cards do better??? And if so!! At what price???

I got this card in October 2009 to replace an ATI 3870 card that was in the system i was upgrading. To date it has run flawlessly. I Live in a hot and dusty location in the Middle East and it never gets too hot and i frequently check the fan/heat sink for dust buildup and find it minimal.

I run this card to a 32" HD LCD TV via a HDMI converter and comes out crystal clear, the card/drivers automatically detected my TV type and resolution and adapted to it. I put a lot of hours on this card as i am a heavy gamer and play a wide variety of games, non of which had a problem on high details. Keep in mind i keep all drivers, including the GPU updated all the time.

I run this card on a motherboard & CPU i ordered with it also from Amazon.com, an AMD Phenom II X4 940 CPU and Asus M4A78 Plus motherboard. They all work well and i highly recommend them!

Wanted the most current, middle of the road graphics card at a good price. Amazon delivered. Installation was a breeze and the graphics card came right up. I am using 2 monitors, a 22 and a 24 inch. Everything looks great and is working superbly. I am using this in my recently built PC, which has an Intel 920 I7, Gigabyte MB, 6Gb RAM, Patriot Warp SSD, Windows 7 64 bit, and Office 2007.
