Product Description

From the Manufacturer

XFX offers you the ultimate reality check with the new XFX Radeon™ HD 5850 graphics cards. Bringing three new dimensions to gaming reality, these graphics cards challenge the limits that have restrained your gaming. Until now. First, ATI Eyefinity Technology literally broadens your horizons by enabling you to spread out across three displays at resolutions of up to 1080p. Use this “wrap-around” in-picture experience to become fully immersed in your gaming—or productively immerse in your work.1 Second, ATI Stream Technology gives your system a significant boost by offloading tasks usually sent to your CPU to your GPU. The result is a more balanced gaming platform that can handle the demands of today’s fully immersive games.2 Third, both the XFX Radeon HD 5850 offer full Microsoft® DirectX®11 support so that you can push your settings to the max and still game at the highest resolutions. And, sure-to-make-you-blink 3D effects are generated through HDR Texture Compression, DirectCompute and Tessellation.

Technology Features

Microsoft DirectX®11
DirectX® 11 is a key feature of Windows® 7 and is important for two key reasons: it helps consumers experience better performing games and faster computing.

ATI Eyefinity technology with DisplayPort connectivity, enables a single GPU to support up to six independent display outputs simultaneously. Boost everyday productivity, or intensify gaming with ultra-immersive playing environments.

ATI Stream Technology is a set of advanced hardware and software technologies that enable AMD graphics processors (GPU), working in concert with the system’s central processor (CPU), to accelerate many applications beyond just graphics.

PCI Express 2.0
solutions double the bandwidth of the existing PCI Express bus delivers faster graphics and enhanced system performance. Additionally, it supports Advanced Power Management features, leading the industry to optimize overall system energy efficiency.

Bonus Game Included!
FOR A LIMITED TIME get your FREE DiRT2 download coupon included in specially marked packages (game available for download December 11, 2009).3 Take the wheel in this first DirectX 11 racing game and experience some of the most realistic graphics ever.

Tessellation
Tessellation is a technique used for many years in the creation of CG film and television effects to add detail to 3D images and it’s now available to PC developers for real time rendering via DirectX 11. Tessellation is truly critical for more realistic environments and characters:

  • Create dynamic water surfaces – look more realistic than ever before
  • Create dynamic clothing on characters – more accurate interaction with environments including wind and movement
  • Create more detailed crowds – high levels of detail no longer need to be limited to characters in the front rows

Multi-Threading
Multi-threading support built into DirectX 11 enables rendering tasks assigned to the CPU to be efficiently spread across AMD’s multiple cores, enabling a better balance of performance between the CPU and GPU.

  • The CPU can effectively feed the graphics processors more data reducing a performance bottleneck

Compute Shaders
Compute Shaders are programs that are executed on the graphics processor. With DirectX 11 and DirectCompute, developers are able to use the massive parallel processing power of modern GPUs to accelerate a much wider range of applications that were previously only executable on CPUs.

  • Optimized post-processing effects – apply advanced lighting techniques to enhance the mood in a scene
  • High quality shadow filtering – no more hard edges on a shadow, see shadows the way you would in real life
  • Depth of field – use the power of the GPU to have more realistic transitions of focal points - imagine looking through a gun sight or a camera lens
  • High definition ambient occlusion – incredibly realistic lighting and shadow combinations

5.0 out of 5 stars Runs Great, October 30, 2009

This review is from: XFX RADEON HD 5850 1 GB DDR5 PCI Express Card HD585AZNFC (Personal Computers)
This replaced my GTX 260 216 and I can say it is an amazing card

Exceeds the performance of the GTX260 in everything except PhysX enabled levels/games, but runs 10c cooler with stock fan control, and my overall case temps went down 5-10c

Batman:AA is the only thing I can think of that you would want an nVidia card for right now, otherwise the feature set, tri display, HDMI audio streaming, power/performance makes it a champ, and the XFX double lifetime warranty is great, just remember to register the card first thing

I have built many computers over the last 15 years usually with nVidia graphics though. I have to say that the drivers on this one were a pain to install. I was upgrading from an nVidia card and wanted to give ATI another chance. After going though the process of cleaning the old drivers after failed installs it did finally work. Now that it's running it's very good. I'm mostly just using it for Starcraft 2 and WoW with 2 monitors at 1900x1200 each.

5.0 out of 5 stars This card is excellent!, December 11, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: XFX RADEON HD 5850 1 GB DDR5 PCI Express Card HD585AZNFC (Personal Computers)
I have more than six months with the card and I can tell you the following:

Pros:
everything is OK with the card, and yes is Reference one, I can play at a resolution of 1680x1050 almost all the titles with the maxed configuration and keep the Games over the 42FPS (I think this is the perfect resolution for this card).

* the card is rather quite and works cool, in idle with the fan set to 36%, the temp is about 36C and on load (playing the Bad company) with the fan set to 65%, the temp is about 60C.

Cons:
for some reason ATI doesn't want this card controls the revolutions of the fan by using the settings predefined in the BIOS of the card, the drivers in windows are taking control of the fan and avoiding the fan increase the revolutions no more than 27% while the temp is about 75C that is so hot.

* To solve this problem, you'll have to use a third-party software known as "Afterburner" from MSI to override the action the drivers cause to the fan, and you could make your own configuration to keep your card cool as possible. Also there is another software to control the fan revolutions, the Sapphire TRIXX.

Other Thoughts:

I think could get be better FPS, just need a better CPU, mine is a AMD Athlon II X3 435.
