How Does It Work?

The portable GPS and battery cradle works with all iPod touch 1G, 2G, and 3G models. The GPS receiver provides location information to most any GPS-aware app available in the App Store.*

GPS
The high-sensitivity GPS receiver is built directly into the cradle (not the windshield mount), giving you GPS capabilities on the iPod touch wherever you go. The GPS receiver provides location information to most any GPS-aware app that requests it, enabling dozens of new uses on the iPod touch.

Rechargeable Battery
The cradle's rechargeable battery can power the GPS receiver for approximately 10 hours of continual operation. You can also use the battery to recharge the iPod, doubling the life of the iPod battery. Charge the cradle's battery via your car's cigarette lighter or the USB port on your computer.

Navigation on iPod touch*
The GPS receiver will work with most any car and boat navigation app available in the App Store, including apps from TomTom, Magellan, and Navigon. A built-in amplified speaker loudly delivers navigation voice prompts. When in a car, you can also easily connect the cradle to your car stereo and play your music and navigation voice prompts through your car speakers.

Secure Docking for Car or Boat
The included windshield mount securely docks the cradle with the iPod and attaches it to the windshield for easy viewing and access. The mount is fully adjustable, including portrait and landscape positions. It has a built-in DC power jack for charging the cradle's battery from the car's cigarette lighter, as well as a 3.5-mm audio out to connect to a car stereo. Ideal for use with car navigation apps as well as marine chart plotter apps.

Easy Charging and Syncing
The cradle features a mini USB port for charging the rechargeable battery and syncing the iPod without having to remove the cradle. Mini USB to USB cable is included.

*Important:
Apps not included. The cradle works with most apps that are available for the iPod touch and do not require a network connection. Navigation apps must have built-in maps. I've recently ordered this product twice from this website, once from one of the cheaper sellers, and again from one of Dual's "authorised" distributors (WNH Distribution), which promised to send an upgraded unit. BOTH times I received a unit that is non-compatible with the iPod touch 4th generation (meaning it has to be sent back to the manufacturer for a "firmware 10/10" upgrade). If you order from a non-authorised distributor and need the upgrade, Dual will charge you $60 +shipping (to IL and back) for the upgrade, which takes 1-2 weeks. If you order from an authorised distributer, you'll still have to fork out the shipping costs.

So take note that there are two different products on this website - if you have an iPod touch 4th generation, you're effectively entering a lottery to see which version gets sent to you!

What is the matter with you? A NEW version of this device XGPS251 with the 10/10 firmware exists. The old version of this device does NOT work with an iPOD TOUCH 4th generation device. Now I have to send this XGPS251 into the maufacture and get a replacement unit sent, which is going to take an additional 14 days and an extra $19.95 to complete the order. Why do I have to send it in to the manufacture? Because the manufacture of this product does NOT allow the owner to upgrade the firmware. Why did you send out an older unit? Why?

I have not had this kind of experience with you before. Why would you send out a product that is OUTDATED? You have made me rethink doing any future business with you.

Be sure you know that this model comes without navigation software and it is for an iPod Touch, not an iPhone. The Dual iPod GPS that costs about twice has software.

For navigation there is plenty of software that covers boating, driving, hiking and even flying that is all available at the iTunes store. I'm busy learning some of them. In addition to navigation it will help with iPhone applications that want to find nearby restaurants and coffee shops.

What makes this item a good deal at $100 is that it also works well as a "protection case" and "battery extender". Separately, those items would cost around $60. Also included are a car cord, windshield mount and wall charger that make it easy to use as a music/audiobook/podcast player in a car.

So, what you get is pretty good GPS functionality for about $40. I like it!
