A beautiful, challenging FPS.,
By "charliekkkk" (Boise, Idaho, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: XIII (Video Game)
XIII is a beautiful, challenging FPS. It is the first FPS to use cel-shading, a graphical technique that makes the game look like a cartoon. The level of detail throughout is amazing. It looks and feels like a comic book. XIII controls like most console FPS games. If you have played Hitman 2, Red Faction, or Timesplitters, you will be familar with this setup. The controls are very responsive, and allow you to aim with much precision.XIII has a lengthy one player mode. There are 12 levels, connected by a good story, although the plot is far from original. This can get difficult, especially because enemies always hit you. XIII has split-screen multiplayer for up to four players. There are 30 maps, which support capture the flag, deathmatch, and team deathmatch. There is no lag at all. XIII is one of the best FPSs on the market. As for which version is better, they all have exclusive content. The PS2 version has an exclusive multiplayer mode, but it isn't very fun. It is like deathmatch, but you have to only kill certain players. The Xbox version has 8 players online, and voice chat. The Gamecube version is the only one that has split-screen multiplayer. Overall, XIII is a must buy.

XIII = Very underrated...but not without its flaws..,

I remember back when this game hit stores it got really bad scores which caused me to neglect this game(I don't do that with games but I decided to do it with this)but I decided to buy a few days ago at the gamestop by my house for the price of 8 dollars used for the Nintendo Gamecube and I must say this game is criminaly underrated! The game has a terrific yet somewhat confusing plot(which becomes easy to understand as you progress through)the music has this funky 70's beat to it and David D from the hit show X files does the voice work for the main character(and Adam West is in this game as well!!!). Now how does this game sum up?..well
First off Visualy the game looks terrific, no FPS has ever done what XIII has done and that is add cell shaded visuals to the game and the game works very well, something I liked was how the characters were in cellshaded visuals while the backround was completley 2d er 3d(I forgot!). I wouldn't say they're jaw dropping but the games visuals are A+ in my book and very original I must say. Now the sound is this game is one of my favorites, and each song played in a level gos so well with it, it has this 70s like crime beat with funk in it. Not only is the music good but the voice acting is great as well! ADAM WEST, c'mon guys the original batman! The gameplay in the game plays like any other FPS but something not many FPS have are STEALTH missions which this game has aswell as the ability to pick objects up. When you're close to an enemy and you're sneaking behind them with a shovel or anything you have in your hand you can bash them over the head with out having other gaurds hear it. The weapons in the game are always great and the ability to get new skills(which you get by getting Documents lied around the game but they won't acctually need to be used to beat the game unless you like dualing weapons)which gives this game some flavor if you ask me...NOW......lets get to the bad part First off I will admit I suck at games but this game is just cheap on Normal difficulty, 2 shots from any gun shot from an enemy LITERALY takes half your life away(Were els it takes longer for you to kill them!!). I also I have to say this but the saving system blows, I mean you can only save in the beginning of the games level or the checkpoint of the games level(were the heck is the save anywere you want, oh it's suppose to be CHALLENGING...But that doesn't mean having 2-3 shots of pistol taking your friggin life away!). The fact that if you ignore the "die restart mission over and over" you'll notice this is a pretty short game(it's the fact that you DIE alot that distracts you from realizing this games short, it can be beatin in 6 hours if you're very good)..Basicly the save system sucks, the A.I isn't the best but the developers sure as hell did a good job at making them cheap...so lets get down to it The good -First FPS to use Cell shaded visuals -The level desighns for each mission is really good -The voice acting is A+ in this game -ADAM WEST(BATMAN)!!! -Good plot -Very awesome music The Bad -I find it really cheap that the A.I can take off like 70% of your health with 2 shots from the worst weapons were els it takes forever to kill them with a friggin machine gun -The Save sucks........bad(then again this was how the Ratchet and Clank series is like) -The games ending.....people complain about Halo 2....that's nothing compared to how this game ends... Overall I had a very enjoyable(and frustraiting)time with XIII, it was a very good game that never got the credit it deserves and I appreciate Ubisoft for creating a game that uses Cell shaded visual and stealth gameplay. The music is terrific, aswell as voice overs, but some of the flaws and problems I had were not very good like the save system cheap A.I and someother things that people have already pointed out...oh yeah and the ending to this game is horrible and we won't be seing a sequal to this game anytime soon. Other then that I give XIII for the Nintendo Gamecube a 4.0 out of 5...

Worthwhile Shooter,

At first I was hesitant on purchasing this game due to reviews I have received on the game. But I broke down and purchased a copy and have not been disappointed yet. I predominately play FPS from the newest Bond to Hitman. And this game ranks right up there with them all. The gameplay is spectacular. As well as the graphics. If you are a comic book fan and enjoy the latest animation style with the bold colors and crisp lines this game is worth purchasing. The multiplayer is a blast, literally, and you can play alone or with several other players. It is one of the best shooters on the market.

When I first heard of XIII, my thoughts were that a cell shaded FPS would never work. How wrong I was. This game is creative, and really brings a fresh view on a genre that was getting stale. First, the missions were excellent. Melee weapons were fitted so well into gameplay, and the weapons balance well. Also, the story, the sounds, just everything.I also loved the multiplayer. For starters, bots! They have bots! Second, the scenario 'Hunt' has to be one of the most creative things I've seen in a while. All in all, this game easily earns 5 out of 5.

I really don't know why all the magazines complained about this title. Sure, the difficulty can be steep, but so can Halo's. Anyway, the lack of an autoaim feature shouldn't bug anyone--true shooter players don't use autoaim, cause it's cheap.
The story is refined and great, opening questions about conspiracy theories, even though there are some similarities to the Kennedy brothers. Suffice to say, there are enough plot twists here to keep anyone, even someone weaned on The X-Files, 24, and Alias swooning with the amount of narrative twists and turns. The story is also incorporated nicely into the game play, with cinematic-style flashback scenes that can be played through, with a film grain filter over the visuals. The sound is also very well done, with stellar performances from David Duchovney, Eve, and Adam West; in the same way, guns and the respective sound effects are very good, and are immersive, though completely overblown, which is somehow appropriate for a game based on a French graphic novel. Everything about this game shines with polish--it would be a mistake to not pick it up if you are of age and can handle a mature, complex story with difficult bosses and well-thought-out levels. I bought this game with mixed feelings about it, especially given that I had recently played pure waste such as Die Hard: Vendetta. But this game is very well done, and is very enjoyable, while it lasts. It's short, but the minute I finished it the first time, I went back and played through it again, and then once more, just because I liked it so much. Multiplayer isn't as great, but it's still good, despite the obvious lack of attention to this mode. Sure, it isn't a Halo-calibur multiplay mode, but some of the modes in there rule, and had my friends and I screaming with laughter just because it was so fun. Anyway, buy this game, you won't regret it.

Great Game - A must have!,

This is one of the few games which I gave 5 stars too. It deserves the 5 stars. The game is fun and challenging and realistic. Let me break it down so it will be easier.
Single player- Very good. The AI is good(on the hardest difficulty level) and the levels are good too. Some missions will remind you of Splinter Cell. Multi-player- Also very good. Supports up to 4 players split screen and features favorites like deathmath and capture the flag. Bots can be added too. Graphics- Don't let the graphic style look foll you. The graphics are great. It's unique so this is nothing like any other shooter. There are few spots that could be worked on but they are hard to notice. AI- Like I said above, it's good on the hardest difficulty level. Normal is pretty good. Haven't tried easiest yet. Weapons- Good variety. There are machine guns, pistols, shotgun, rocket launcher, and even chairs and shovels to knock someone out! Controls- A bit hard to get used to if your not a first person shooter fan, but quite easy. Plot- In my opinion, one of the best in FPS history. An assassination conspiracy that you have to figure out. Overall, this game has almost everything a person could ask for in a FPS.

one of the few great first person shooters for the nintendo gamecube.,
= Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: XIII (Video Game)
XIII is a somewhat rare first person shooter(1. because it's on the gamecube, 2. because it's cell shaded) that sort of flew under the radar.
Natuarlly, the gamecube has always lacked in that department with all the bigger, popular action titles going to the ps2 and xbox. however XIII is a big step in the right direction for the gamcube. XIII is a first person shooter that is cell shaded, and has a 1970's crime show approach. I say that because of the funky soundtrack, and because it has comic book style cut scenes, with little words that jump on screen when you shoot somebody, like "pow" and 'Boom". Kind of like "Max Payne" for the ps2. The gameplay aspect of the game is good. However the storyline can be a little confusing at first. The plot is that you have been found half dead on a east coast beach with no memory of what happend or any sense of who you are. The only clue you have to getting your life and memory back is the roman numeral XIII tatooed on your chest. There are plenty of weapons and little gadgets to help you on your quest. controls are better than i expected, but the main character can be a little slow at switching weapons in a gun battle. However one thing i really didn't like was how often you die in the game, and it takes quite a few shots to kill the enemy. That stuff does get a little old, but it isn't enough to make someone hate it. The graphics are not the best in the world, they kind of remind one of a early Ps2 game. When i first saw the game and i noticed on the back of it that it was cell shaded, I thought "Oh no, they have ruined it", but i decided to buy it anyway beacuse there isn't a whole lot of FPS's for the gamecube. Man was i wrong about the cell shading. The added visual of it really makes the game stand out from other first person shooters. After a hour or two of playing the game, you forget all about the cell shading, and it looks somewhat normal to you. With all that said, here are the PRO's/CON'S for "XIII" on the Nintendo Gamecube. PRO'S- 1. Great gameplay, probably one of the best first person shooters for gamecube. 2. Good story. 3. Cell shading, It actaully makes this game look better. 4. Good controls 5. A different shooting game experience. CON'S- 1. Some of the missions can be a little tedious. 2. Weapon changes are a little slow. 3. It takes too many shots to kill enemey 4. you die alot, and have to retry the whole mission all the time. overall, XIII is without a doubt one of if not the best first person shooters for Nintendo Gamecube. It offers a competely different gaming experience than other competitors in it's genre, with a relatively good price. I was a bit skeptical when i seen this bargain bin beauty, but i decided to try anyway, and boy was i glad i did. This game really did fly under the radar, and i don't know why beacause this is some of the best gaming gamecube has to offer. If you own a gamecube, or your like me and like huntin' for the "good" bargain bin games for a somewhat older system, then look no further. Pick this game up if you find it because it's a rare treat for gamecube owners.

Conspiracy Thriller Comic Turned Into a Video Game!,

If you've read any of my other reviews, you will know that I'm a huge fan of First Person Shooter type games or FPS. That being the fact, I've played many dozens of FPS type games on various platforms. In order for an FPS type game to get a perfect score, it has to excel on numerous fronts. It needs to have decent graphics, tons of different weapons, numerous unique and non-repetitive levels, smart enemy A.I. and a decent amount of game playability. Well folks, XIII or Thirteen is such a game. Imagine taking a spy thriller type comic book and turning it into a video game. That's exactly what the programmers at Ubisoft have created. Don't be put off by the "comic" looking graphics. Doing so will cause you to miss a really awesome game. I know, because that's exactly what I did. Until a friend of mine told me that I just had to play this game. So, I put my prejudice against "comic" graphics aside and played the game. I'm so glad I did! Once I got into it, I was hooked until I couldn't stop playing! It's awesome how the "comic book" references are thoughtfully put into the game. Things like shooting a bad guy at the top of a cliff and then watching the words "Ahhhh!!!" come up in a balloon as he plummets to the ground. Just like it would in a real comic book! All "comics" aside, once you really start playing the game you just forget about the cartoon like graphics and start blasting away at the bad guys. You get to shoot over 15 different weapons (knife, 9mm pistol, grenades, .44 special, double-barrel and pump-action shotguns, harpoon launcher (yes, there's an underwater level), crossbows (nothing like headshots from long distance with this one), mini gun (think Uzi), kalash (think AK47), assault rifle (with grenade launcher), machine gun (so heavy, it actually slows you down), bazooka (a FPS game without a bazooka is not a FPS game!), sniper rifle (again, what good FPS would be complete without a sniper rifle!). And you can also use chairs, brooms, bottles, ashtrays and other objects as weapons. The latter weapons will become a necessity during the "stealth" mode levels of the game. All of the levels are very diverse and take place in various locations, everything from sandy beaches and wooded forests to icy, snowy mountains. As you play the game, various pieces of a conspiracy involving a presidential assassination begin to unravel. Although, you yourself have amnesia and are trying to figure out whom you are as well. There are a total of about 8 different boss fights that you have to defeat to continue in the game. Luckily the checkpoints are thoughtfully laid out so that you won't have to cover too much repetitive ground if you should die the first few times. Some of the boss fights were easier than others, but they were all enjoyable. There is also a 4-player split-screen multiplayer mode that includes deathmatch, team deathmatch and capture the flag. You can also play deathmatch by yourself, since the game designers thoughtfully added some "bots" to play with you during deathmatch. XII Thirteen is rated "M" for Mature. Like most FPS type games, there is a TON of blood and intense violence. This game is all about shooting and killing people and blowing things up. Which is the case with most FPS type games. If that's what floats your boat, then get a copy of this game! It was totally awesome, all the way to the very end? The music soundtrack was also very fitting to the game. |
