Product Description

Ubi Soft introduces cel-shading to the First-Person Shooter genre with the unique, politically-charged XIII. Discover the secrets of the conspiracy-rich plot and find out the mysterious connection between your shrouded past, and the President's assassination. Become a master of both stealth infiltration and weapons-based combat in order to survive a relentless slew of enemies. Strategically switch between silent weapons such as the deadly crossbow, or distance and power weapons like the sniper rifle and machine gun. Immerse yourself in an epic conspiracy story with a visual style straight from the pages of a comic book.

From the Manufacturer

XIII is a stylish, first-person shooter thriller featuring a conspiracy of epic proportions. As a secret agent with complete amnesia, players unravel clues behind their true identity, while uncovering sinister plots against themselves, the U.S. government, and a mysterious presidential assassination. In XIII, Jones proves a valuable ally, as players will need to call upon her assistance in several gripping situations. This Collaborative mode is just one of XIII's varied gameplay modes, which also include Stealth, All-Out Action, and multiplayer.

Features

  • The Ultimate Conspiracy: Unravel a whirling conspiracy plot where your identity, the President’s assassination, and the future of America are shrouded in mystery.
  • So Much Style, It’s Criminal: Graphic novel presentation, flashback graphics and pop up windows create a groundbreaking entry into the genre. XIII marshals the power of Unreal II technology and unique comic book visual styles.
  • Groundbreaking Gameplay: Experience a wide variety of gameplay – cunning use of human shields, silent weapons and XII’s internal "sixth sense" that detects approaching enemies. To survive, you’ll master techniques ranging from covert infiltration to heavy combat as you battle sinister conspiratorial forces.
  • A Deadly Arsenal of Weapons: Handle a dizzying array of weapons ranging from silent crossbows to precision sniper rifles, furious automatic weapons, chairs, bottles, ashtrays, shovels and even enemy soldiers’ bodies.
  • A New Kind of Multiplayer: Square off against other players in innovative multiplayer modes such as the cooperative Cover Me along with classic modes such as Capture the Flag and Deathmatch.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lives Up to the Hype November 25, 2003
Platform for Display:PlayStation2
While some first person shooters go for realism, XIII brings you into a comic book world of slow motion falls and fun camera angles, all in cel shaded glory!
First, you are XIII. You've got anmesia, just like probably 50% of other game heroes :) You are caught up in some sort of international conspiracy and have to figure out who you are and what is going on. And, of course, Who You Can Trust.
The plot is long and complicated and great fun to work through. But it's the graphics that really shine. This is all cel shaded, so you really feel like you're in a comic book story. They have cut scenes to add to that feeling. If someone's standing up on a cliff and you shoot them down, little "AAaaaaggghhh"s trail after them! There are all sorts of effects like that that are very fun to watch.
The interface is very easy to use. Symbols pop up to show you when you can perform actions. There's the usual medkits, weapons and ammo. They do a GREAT job with this. If an enemy's gun runs out, they have to reload. If you take too long to get to them and they fire a lot of bullets, their ammo will be gone when you pick up the gun!
There's great multiplayer here too, with a variety of maps and gameplay options. So even when you finish the game, there will be much more fun to be had.
I was worried that with all the hype surrounding this game that it wouldn't deliver. And indeed, some people at the game shop I buy from claimed that they were disappointed. But really, the game is amazingly well done, has great graphics and great gameplay with characters that you get actively interested in. You'd have to be pretty jaded to diss this game just because it was hyped before its release!

3.0 out of 5 stars Great Game with flawed features December 10, 2003
Platform for Display:PlayStation2
This game is a fun FPS and is definitely worth buying, but like others I would agree it is a style specific preference. The comic book sort of graphics that are unique to XIII make it an exciting new experience, but just because Ubisoft went a different direction than other FPSs doesn't mean it isn't fatally flawed. Like other reviews, the checkpoint system where you have to replay the whole mission if you die at any point in the level, is AWFUL! This one aspect of the game is enough to drive anybody Nucking Futs. Whoever thought that was a good way to take the game, needs to be the beatin' of the week. Other than that, controls are not great but not terrible, the story is a little convoluted and by no means novel. I think the selling point is the unique graphics, the zoom in comic boxes that appear in the event of a headshot when sniping (very cool), and in general just getting to sit there and mow people down with an assault rifle. Great game that could have been so much better, and it makes you sad to know how good it could have been!

5.0 out of 5 stars Mr. Rowland? July 9, 2004
By Pat
Platform for Display:PlayStation2
This game is GREAT! First of all let me say that I am not a fan on First Person Shooters but this game caught my attention with cell-shading and the story. In the game you wake up on a beach with no memory of who you are. You are shortly arrested for the murder of the President. As the story progresses you uncover a conspiracy larger than the government. The weapon choice is average, but the enviorments are neat. Multiplayer mode is fun and there are different types of multiplayer games. There are times where you must be stealthy, and there are times where it is flat out chaos. Overall this is a great game and a must have for Playstation 2.

5.0 out of 5 stars A beautiful, challenging FPS. November 9, 2003
Platform for Display:PlayStation2
XIII is a beautiful, challenging FPS. It is the first FPS to use cel-shading, a graphical technique that makes the game look like a cartoon. The level of detail throughout is amazing. It looks and feels like a comic book. XIII controls like most console FPS games. If you have played SOCOM, Red Faction, or Timesplitters, you will be familar with this setup. The controls are very responsive, and allow you to aim with much precision.
XIII has a lengthy one player mode. There are 12 levels, connected by a good story, although the plot is far from original. This can get difficult, especially because enemies always hit you.
XIII is also online. It supports up to four players, although it is broadband (cable/DSL) only. There are 30 maps, which support deathmatch, capture the flag, and team deathmatch. There is no lag at all. However, other games on PS2 (Tirbes, SOCOM, Ghost Recon: Jungle Storm) support 16 players.
XIII is one of the best FPSs on the market. As for which version is better, they all have exclusive content. The PS2 version has an exclusive multiplayer mode, but it isn't very fun. It is like deathmatch, but you have to only kill certain players. The Xbox version has 8 players online, and voice chat. The Gamecube version is the only one that has split-screen multiplayer.
Overall, XIII is a must buy.

5.0 out of 5 stars multiplayer aspect online December 27, 2004
A Kid's Review
Platform for Display:PlayStation2
Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
I have only watch my friend play the story mode, but i have played this game online for non-stop hours. Let me say i love the online play. All though there are only 3 modes deathmatch, team deathmatch, and powerup mode, the game is so fun you just really dont care. Plus you can join in whenever, but when i mean by that is if theres a game going on you dont have to wait intell there done to join, you can just join in whenever. My only complain is theres no chat rooms, buddy list or usbheadset.

Theres tons of fun levels to play so your never bored. I hope my review helped you on the online aspect of this game. I really hope ubisoft makes a sequel to this awesome game and adds the chat room etc.
