Lives Up to the Hype,
This review is from: XIII (Video Game)
While some first person shooters go for realism, XIII brings you into a comic book world of slow motion falls and fun camera angles, all in cel shaded glory!First, you are XIII. You've got anmesia, just like probably 50% of other game heroes :) You are caught up in some sort of international conspiracy and have to figure out who you are and what is going on. And, of course, Who You Can Trust. The plot is long and complicated and great fun to work through. But it's the graphics that really shine. This is all cel shaded, so you really feel like you're in a comic book story. They have cut scenes to add to that feeling. If someone's standing up on a cliff and you shoot them down, little "AAaaaaggghhh"s trail after them! There are all sorts of effects like that that are very fun to watch. The interface is very easy to use. Symbols pop up to show you when you can perform actions. There's the usual medkits, weapons and ammo. They do a GREAT job with this. If an enemy's gun runs out, they have to reload. If you take too long to get to them and they fire a lot of bullets, their ammo will be gone when you pick up the gun! There's great multiplayer here too, with a variety of maps and gameplay options. So even when you finish the game, there will be much more fun to be had. I was worried that with all the hype surrounding this game that it wouldn't deliver. And indeed, some people at the game shop I buy from claimed that they were disappointed. But really, the game is amazingly well done, has great graphics and great gameplay with characters that you get actively interested in. You'd have to be pretty jaded to diss this game just because it was hyped before its release!

Great Game with flawed features,
By
This review is from: XIII (Video Game)
This game is a fun FPS and is definitely worth buying, but like others I would agree it is a style specific preference. The comic book sort of graphics that are unique to XIII make it an exciting new experience, but just because Ubisoft went a different direction than other FPSs doesn't mean it isn't fatally flawed. Like other reviews, the checkpoint system where you have to replay the whole mission if you die at any point in the level, is AWFUL! This one aspect of the game is enough to drive anybody Nucking Futs. Whoever thought that was a good way to take the game, needs to be the beatin' of the week. Other than that, controls are not great but not terrible, the story is a little convoluted and by no means novel. I think the selling point is the unique graphics, the zoom in comic boxes that appear in the event of a headshot when sniping (very cool), and in general just getting to sit there and mow people down with an assault rifle. Great game that could have been so much better, and it makes you sad to know how good it could have been!

This game is GREAT! First of all let me say that I am not a fan on First Person Shooters but this game caught my attention with cell-shading and the story. In the game you wake up on a beach with no memory of who you are. You are shortly arrested for the murder of the President. As the story progresses you uncover a conspiracy larger than the government. The weapon choice is average, but the enviorments are neat. Multiplayer mode is fun and there are different types of multiplayer games. There are times where you must be stealthy, and there are times where it is flat out chaos. Overall this is a great game and a must have for Playstation 2.

I have only watch my friend play the story mode, but i have played this game online for non-stop hours. Let me say i love the online play. All though there are only 3 modes deathmatch, team deathmatch, and powerup mode, the game is so fun you just really dont care. Plus you can join in whenever, but when i mean by that is if theres a game going on you dont have to wait intell there done to join, you can just join in whenever. My only complain is theres no chat rooms, buddy list or usbheadset.
Theres tons of fun levels to play so your never bored. I hope my review helped you on the online aspect of this game. I really hope ubisoft makes a sequel to this awesome game and adds the chat room etc.

This is the best first person shooter i've played in a while and i don't play many first person shooters. The voice acting is incredible! It has David Duchovny and Adam West in it. All of the special gadgets and weapons are amazing. I personally don't like like many stealth games but this made me like them more. And its such a good price for the great quality of the game. I recommend this to anyone who likes action games or comics.

I wasn't sure that I was going to like this game in spite of the great reviews from other gamers and magazine editors. Long story short....I'm very glad I bought this game! The graphics are clean and nice! The story is great! Took some time to get used to the controls but overall I highly recommend this game to first person shooter fans!

A beautiful, challenging FPS.,

XIII is a beautiful, challenging FPS. It is the first FPS to use cel-shading, a graphical technique that makes the game look like a cartoon. The level of detail throughout is amazing. It looks and feels like a comic book. XIII controls like most console FPS games. If you have played SOCOM, Red Faction, or Timesplitters, you will be familar with this setup. The controls are very responsive, and allow you to aim with much precision.XIII has a lengthy one player mode. There are 12 levels, connected by a good story, although the plot is far from original. This can get difficult, especially because enemies always hit you. XIII is also online. It supports up to four players, although it is broadband (cable/DSL) only. There are 30 maps, which support deathmatch, capture the flag, and team deathmatch. There is no lag at all. However, other games on PS2 (Tirbes, SOCOM, Ghost Recon: Jungle Storm) support 16 players. XIII is one of the best FPSs on the market. As for which version is better, they all have exclusive content. The PS2 version has an exclusive multiplayer mode, but it isn't very fun. It is like deathmatch, but you have to only kill certain players. The Xbox version has 8 players online, and voice chat. The Gamecube version is the only one that has split-screen multiplayer. Overall, XIII is a must buy.

Think Nintendo meets Manchurian Candidate...,
By Bryan (USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: XIII (Video Game)
I have to hand it to the people at Ubi. This is one creative and innovative game. It's creative primarily because of the "comic book" style animation and graphics. Now, you might think "well that's lame" - but it's really not. The graphics of the game are smooth and it is a refreshing twist from the typical "Call of Quake" run and gun - everyone's head is exploding - nonsense. It's also creative because of its plot and twists (which I won't reveal, but think Manchurian Candidate or Day of the Jackal... the plotline is THAT good.) XIII could easily be a movie starring someone like Mel Gibson (thinking PayBack) or perhaps if XIII is going to be a bit suave... Pierce Brosnan (007). David Duchovny is to weenie-ish for me as the voice... I expect him to be wining "But Skully - Aliens have ruled the world since the dawn of man" at any moment. This game has some nice foley work as well as some nice voice talent... you will vaguely recognize the voices... but it is well acted and well orchestrated. This is not a "get in there and blow everyone's head up" - but it is not one of those lame easter-egg hunt games either (like Myst or those other 'you must find everything to proceed' games). It has a nice blend of action and suspense... you definitely get to kill people (I like the SAW), but running around like Superman on Steriods get's you killed in a heartbeat (which is more realistic in my opine). Who killed the President? Play XIII... Who is XIII? Find out... you'll be really surprised!

Finally, a decent hier to the Timesplitters 2 FPS King...,
By LiamO (London) - See all my reviews

Xii is based on a french comic but dont let it put you off! ok... I love timesplitters 2 as it was the best fps i have ever played and since i got it last christmas has kept me satisfied, but now i wanted something new. I looked at all the games reviews from various sites (i dont buy many games, only the really good ones!) and Xiii intrigued me the most. Its got class and is my replacement for TP2. I have played the hyped up games such as true crime, and well true crime is very crap. Basically get this game if you love FPs, want to start on FPS' or want it as the original and brilliant game that it is!Breakdown: . cell shading Bad i dont know what else this is a must have game! |
