5.0 out of 5 stars A beautiful, challenging FPS.
XIII is a beautiful, challenging FPS. It is the first FPS to use cel-shading, a graphical technique that makes the game look like a cartoon. The level of detail throughout is amazing. It looks and feels like a comic book. XIII controls like most console FPS games. If you have played Halo, Red Faction, or Timesplitters, you will be familar with this setup. The controls are...

3.0 out of 5 stars Decent shooter, nice cell shading
Overall it was a decent game with some really cool touches, but it lacked in many departments. For one, the multiplayer and XBOX live features are worthless. They really should have done a better job with the movements of players in multiplayer. Enemies run like chickens with their heads cut off. This game is basically a "lighter", cartoon version of splinter cell with...

5.0 out of 5 stars A beautiful, challenging FPS., November 9, 2003

XIII is a beautiful, challenging FPS. It is the first FPS to use cel-shading, a graphical technique that makes the game look like a cartoon. The level of detail throughout is amazing. It looks and feels like a comic book. XIII controls like most console FPS games. If you have played Halo, Red Faction, or Timesplitters, you will be familar with this setup. The controls are very responsive, and allow you to aim with much precision.

XIII has a lengthy one player mode. There are 12 levels, connected by a good story, although the plot is far from original. This can get difficult, especially because enemies always hit you.

XIII is also online. It supports up to eight players with Xbox Live. There are 30 maps, which support deathmatch, capture the flag, and team deathmatch. There is no lag at all.

XIII is one of the best FPSs on the market. As for which version is better, they all have exclusive content. The PS2 version has an exclusive multiplayer mode, but it isn't very fun. It is like deathmatch, but you have to only kill certain players. The Xbox version has 8 players online, and voice chat. The Gamecube version is the only one that has split-screen multiplayer.

Overall, XIII is a must buy.

5.0 out of 5 stars This game ROCKS!!!, December 1, 2003

This game is by far one of the best FPS i have ever played!

Story mode is awesome with 12-15 hours of gameplay that keeps you glued to the tv.

Multiplayer mode is awesome with deathmatch, team deathmatch, capture the flag, and a multiplayer mode exclusive to Xbox: Sabotage. Xbox live makes it even better.

The graphics are unique (cel-shaded) and are made to look like a comic book, which is where the story actually came from (a french graphic novel series).

This game will keep you you entertained for ages!

4.0 out of 5 stars Good but could be better, April 27, 2004

I bought this game because the creators, Ubisoft, also made Rainbox Six 3 which is an awesome game.

I just finished this game so I thought I would give a review and hopefully give others an idea of whether to buy this game.

I liked this game cause it's different that the other games out there. The comic book feel of the game is definitely a change.

The only thing i didn't like about this game was the number of stealth missions that you had to go through. Also, i wish you could go through the missions with another player. You do have the option of playing against one another of the different maps with the multiplayer option, but it's not the same as going through the missions. And you do have the option of playing this game online through Xbox Live.

All in all, it's still a pretty good game and i would recommend it.

PS: Beware of Mongoose!

4.0 out of 5 stars Bourne Identity? Some facts, and thinks twice, December 20, 2003

A lot of people are complaining about the XIII story being a camouflaged plagiarism on the movie "Bourne Identity". That's definitely not true. The story is based on a belgium/french graphic novel by Jean van Hamme and William VanCutsem that started in the early eigthies as a comic book. There are now 14 or 15 parts of the story published with each of it around 48 pages in size. My brother owns them all for a long time and I love to read through the whole story since it incorporates a lot more than combat. It has a very intelligent and deep story for all of you that are interested in more than the fighting in this game. In fact I rate it one of the best, most fascinating, most thrilling and most political involved comic stories ever. It surely pays to look for the comic books as a deeper insight in the world of XIII.

Lots of the parts of the script of "Bourne Identity" are directly inspired by this graphic novel classic and it is more the other way round. B.I. is a rewrite for celluloid of "XIII"

5.0 out of 5 stars Not the most original game, but definetly one of the funnest, August 29, 2004

XIII is a VERY cool game. It has a story you'll actually care about, awesome multiplayer modes (especially sabatoge) and some WAY cool graphics. This is no HALO-beater but this is still a solid entry into the crowded market of XBOX first person shooters. If you are a good gamer and want to have a challenge, play the game on the most difficult setting (it isnt that hard). The quality of this game is incredible and the weapons and everything are incredibly detailed. For example, when carrying the M60 Heavy Machine Gun, you will run slower than when you are carrying a whimpy pistol. Overall, I would give this game a 9 out of 10. This is a definite MUST BUY not only because of its quality, but because of its bargain basement price. WORD UP PZ OUT.

5.0 out of 5 stars A really great game, June 15, 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: XIII (Video Game)
I really enjoyed this game and I can't wait for the sequel.
Some people didn't like the cel shading graphics, but I think it looks fantastic. The graphics remind me a little of anime. The story line is great, being based on a French comic book. I had this for PS2 and when I gave that to my brother and bought an Xbox, I made sure to buy this one again. It also has a lot of "replay" value. I like the control setup. I could play this game all day after beating it. I much prefer this game to Halo (which is also a good game, but kinda boring after a while.) The other games I like are Hitman 2 and Hitman contracts. So if you like those, you'll like XIII. In Hitman you can't punch a guy, but in XIII you can. Some people didn't like the save features, (using checkpoints) but you get used to it. For $20 you can't go wrong. For example, I just bought Freedom Fighters for $20 and finished it in about 3 hours. XIII took a few days. Buy this game!

5.0 out of 5 stars BUY THIS!!!!, May 18, 2004
This review is from: XIII (Video Game)
This is one of those games that you will either love or hate. To all those people who say the graphics are stupid looking. Ya'll Suck!!!! The graphics are what make this game what it is. When I first got this game, I thought it was gonna be just another FPS with cool graphics. I was wrong!! This is one of the greatest games ever! The game has many plot twists and turns, and a few surprises in store. If you rent this game, don't give up on it after the first couple levels, give it a chance to build up speed. Once you start playing this game, it is very hard to put down. My one complaint with this game is on the last 3 levels, it turns into a stealth game. It pulls off the stealth briliantly. However, it's a shooter game, not a stealth game. The weapons in this game are incredible. Ranging from crossbows to glass bottles. Pretty much, there's a gun for everyone's killing style. Bottom Line, BUY THIS GAME!!! You will not regret it!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Should be a Game of the Year!, April 13, 2004

I really like this game because you can keep hostages and not very many other games allow you to do that. But, with all of the aiming weapons, you don't get crosshairs, which makes the weapons not as accurate at close range.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very great game, January 15, 2004
This review is from: XIII (Video Game)
When I went to the store to buy a game I really wasn't looking for this game, but after some suggestions and realizing that you can play this over a system link and online, I thought, well I'll check this out. I thought the single player of the game may be mediocre at best, but it was so much better than what I had predicted. The graphics, while being cell shaded, look very nice running off of the Unreal engine. Some of the levels are extremly fun and the whole feel of the game brings me back to Goldeneye, which I don't know a person who didn't love that game. The story is decent, although it does have some twists and turns, but it's cool to search for your identity throughout the game. The controls aren't Halo but they suit almost as good, and the replay value is there. Multiplayer is extremly fun and so is trying to beat the game on the higher difficultys. I recommend this game above anything else out right now, apart from Max Payne 2.

4.0 out of 5 stars If you need an FPS, this is one of the better ones right now, January 2, 2004

XIII is a pretty and original FPS with suave controls (esp. the sniper rifle) and several diverse levels. The only problem is that the levels are way too different from each other. The game tries to hard to "mix things up" and, as a result of this over-conscious attempt at variety, parts of it will enthrall you, parts of it will just p!ss you off and try your patience. Those who like the "Escape to Submarine and Kill about 100 guys who all run at you with SMGs" level will be irritated by the next "Hide in the D@mn submarine and try not to be seen by these 100 guys right next to you" level.

I have to say, however, this game got a lot of critical flack when it came out that was largely undeserved. The headshots have never been more satisfying in a game thanks to the cartoon caption-boxes that pop up when you nail someone but good. The game could also have been more consistent with its assessment of what is & isn't a headshot, but what the heck. I can forgive the little bugs when the game as a whole is fun.

Oh, the multiplayer plays out like an updated version of Goldeneye. I really like it; whether online, or splitscreen 1-4, the game is a senseless non-stop shoot-em-up. "I've seen you--I must kill you! Ha! You're dead! Wait, how did you regenerate in the same spot and see me again?!? Ahhh! Alas, I die, Horatio. Haha! Again I have seen you, and for that you must die! BLAM BLAM BLAM!" That sort of thing has it's place in my oeuvre, and maybe yours, too.

What?
It doesn't?
Well I don't like you anymore.
You don't like me, either, well, at least I'm not the one who thought that that old mayonaise was margarine and killed Grandma!
Yeah, well stop coming back here!
It'll just be more of the same if you do, you--
Yeah, well your mom does, too!
You slippery little rat n!ppler.
