After covering the basics of markup languages, Pitts presents XML document-type definitions (DTDs) and XML documents in the broad context of hypertext documents. The book then moves into the more detailed aspects of XML with in-depth discussion of DTDs and content models. The author describes the various entities and introduces you to XLink and XPointer--specifications governing XML links.
Next the author presents XML processors, cascading style sheets (CSS), conversions from HTML to XML, and a look at the present landscape of XML tools and client support. Then it's on to the topic of building XML applications and working with XML vocabularies such as Web Interface Definition Language (WIDL), Channel Definition Format (CDF), Open Software Description Format (OSD), Open Financial Exchange (OFX), and Synchronized Multimedia Integration Language (SMIL). The title finishes with practical discussions of the implementation challenges of XML, the tools to choose, and Web sites to watch for updated information. If you want to learn about where the Web is headed and stay on the bleeding edge, this guide is for you. --Stephen W. Plain

This review is from: XML in Record Time (Paperback)
This book is well arranged. In every chaper, there is a topic, you could follow the it and make progress step by step. I think it give you a clear understanding of XML. However, this is a beginner's book, as I mentioned, if you want to learned more about XML, you have to forward to other books.

In Record Time? Maybe. - In Depth? No Way.,

Indeed, it explains XML and DTD's pretty well. But probably, you're looking for more. Especially when the back-cover mentions "Coverage includes 'XSL', 'Converting HTML to XML', 'WIDL',..." The book merely 'touches' these topics. For real implementation instructions, it redirects you to the Internet. Other books offer you the same thing AND much more (eg. the 'XML Bible' for great XSL-coverage and 'XML by Example' for a Java-point-of-view).

Excellent book to give to a manager,
By A Customer
This review is from: XML in Record Time (Paperback)
I gave this book to a new manager in the company to help him up to speed. He is not responsible for dealing with all details of implimentation but when I came to him every day with a new use for XML at work he needed a good read to explain things. This is exactly what this book is. As a technical reference it is really only the introduction. Almost every chapter points to some URL for more information. As a managers introduction to the technology and for ease of reading - it's a 5 out of 5.
