Xmark vs Bowflex SelectTech - I prefer Bowflex and here's why
on May 5, 2016
I bought the Xmark adjustable dumbbell in 2013 to have as a spare set at the office, it gets the job done.
I have also been using Bowflex SelectTech since 2009 when I started doing P90X, so I know both of them intimately.
in 2015 I built a workout room in my house where I like to try to convince my friends to come work out with me. I don't like having extra dumbbells laying around, so I have the Xmark set for my buddies to use so I can save space.
Overall I find the xmark dumbbells are not as good as the SelectTech - and here's why:
Bowflex: The knob on the bowflex model is much easier to use to select the weight you want, and I've never had a weight plate fall out.
Xmark: It's more difficult to use the weight selector, feels less secure, and I've had the weight plates fall out (only while lifting it off the base though, not while working out)
Bowflex has: 5, 7.5, 10, 12.5, 15, 17.5, 20, 22.5, 25, 30, 35, 40, 45, 50, and 52.5 pounds
Xmark has: 10, 20, 30, 40, 50
^The extra options go a big way for tricep exercises and when you are doing supersets.
Bowflex: The rubber grip of the bowflex is more comfortable, and the plastic coating on the weights make the weights slide in and out of the handle & base like butter.
Xmark: The metal plates seem to resist sliding easily into the base, and the materials of the handle and base seem lower quality.
Bowflex: You can buy an optional stand for the SelectTech which brings the weights up to waist level. This is great for picking up and putting down heavy weights.
Xmark: No option to buy abase for the Xmark.
Bowflex: You pay more for Bowflex, and if you are buying the stand as well, you'll be paying almost double.
Xmark: Cheaper to buy, and you have the option of just buying 1 instead of a pair (not sure why you would just buy one.)
If you are buying a spare set for a buddy, go with the Xmark to save money.
If you are buying a primary set for yourself, spend the extra money and get the Bowflex SelectTech.
