Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Neato XV-11 Robotic All-Floor Vacuum Cleaner with Filters, Boundary Markers, and Extra Brush Heads (Kitchen)
Anyone who's used a Roomba knows it just wanders aimlessly until it decides the room is clean. Short of spinning in a little circle when it detects dirt, it forgets everything as soon as it encounters it. In that aspect, the Neato is a great upgrade. It maps out each room as it goes, and carefully covers each area exactly once. Perhaps the best demonstration of it's navigation abilities is when it finished and returns to the dock. It just shuts off the vacuum and takes the shortest path through multiple rooms straight to the dock. The only place where the Neato doesn't fare as well as the Roomba is when it hits obstacles it can't see. To start with, the bumper seems to ride a little higher than the Roomba, so I had trouble with the Neato getting stuck in the bases of a couple chairs. (The kind with a frame made of a curved metal tube.) It did eventually get out, but I'll put them up on the table in the future. It also tried very hard to get over the divider between my tiled and carpeted areas, but couldn't quite push the little rubber flap which helps collect dirt over the top. That problem was easily solved with a small rug. What I'm a little more concerned about is the way it tries to climb my lamps. I have several IKEA NOT lamps, which seem to be quite popular. When the Neato runs into them, the front of the bumper will hit and make it turn a bit. The problem comes when it tries to continue around them. The Roomba has a curved bumper, so it will just follow the edge of the base by feel. However, the Neato's bumper seems to have a very hard time detecting hits from the side. (The bumper does move from side to side, but with much more resistance than from front to back.) The trouble is, the Neato has enough power to climb most of the way up onto the lamp bases. I'm sure this puts unnecessary strain on the Neato, particularly the rubber brush which is now spinning against the side of the lamp, and it means it misses a little of the floor next to the lamp, since the cleaning part is up off the floor. I'm sure I can fix this by finding something to raise the lamps by a centimeter or two, but I really don't think the square front of the Neato is helping anything. I have no doubt that the Roomba cleans along edges as well or better than the Neato, though the Neato wins hands down everywhere else. I can only hope that iRobot doesn't have the curved bumper patented, and that Neato improves this one flaw in their next model. (Which I look forward to seeing with great anticipation.) Aside from that, the Neato seems to work quite well. Just be aware you might want to use a few well places strips of carpet tape if you want your rugs to stay exactly where they are while Neato is working. It's fairly gentle, but will definitely shift things around over time.

XV-11 All Floor Robotic Vacuum System,
This review is from: Neato XV-11 Robotic All-Floor Vacuum Cleaner with Filters, Boundary Markers, and Extra Brush Heads (Kitchen)
I've had this vacuum for two months now, and it was well worth the purchase. I didn't expect it to clean every little nook and cranny of my home, but so far it has been doing a very good job. I have several drop offs, in our house, so the Roomba was not working out on the main level of our home.
However just after two months I had the left side wheel fail to operate and parts along with a spring came out. I call customer support and a new robot was suppose to be shipped out. After a week and a half no robot and I called back again. I was told that the robot was no back order and as soon as a new one could be shipped out it would get shipped out.

I was a bit skeptical when I purchased the Neato, my husband even more skeptical to the point of almost demanding on the spot that I return it before I even ran it through the house. Maps a room and my furniture? Impossible! Strong suctioning power on this little dinky thing? Yeah right. Won't be continually dinging up my furniture? Get out of town. Yet after 2 days and two spins around the house with my new robot butler I'm sold!Pros: The mapping technology really makes sure this thing isn't literally bouncing off walls and furniture like the Roomba. Brush design is pretty brilliant, you're definitely not going to be yanking and cutting long hairs out of the brush on a daily basis. Vacuum strength is more powerful than the Roomba and almost as powerful my upright. Larger and easier to access dustbin than the Roomba. Much shorter cleaning time than the Roomba because it smartly covers the space rather than randomly. I haven't had to use it yet but the customer service reviews are outstanding, they seem to really stand behind their products and do what they can to address any defective units. It's one of the main reasons I took the plunge on this. LCD display explains what's going on with the unit (empty bin, place on floor, untangle brush, etc). Scheduling feature. Ridiculously simple to use, charge it, hit a button, and off it goes. Software upgrades mean your Neato doesn't suddenly become obsolete. Amazing on hardwoods. I only have an area rug so can't speak to how well it does on carpet. Cons: A little loud but fortunately low pitched and less annoying than the higher pitched Roomba. Struggles a little between my hard wood floor and thick area rug, however it does still manage to find it's way on to the rug. No side sweepers, so could be better on the corners and edges. No bumper at all so on the off occasion that the Neato doesn't recognize a chair leg it hits it a little harder than I'm comfortable with. Neato, for your next model please consider a clear bumper around the device. The Roomba's black bumper definitely leaves scuff marks along the baseboard. Can't be lifted and moved elsewhere without freaking out while it's running. However, you can start the unit from a new point. Should utilize it's mapping technology to find it's way home. Gets caught between rooms or on corners on the way back and although it does work it's way back it's a bit stressful watching it figure out where it needs to go. Firmware updates are PC only so MAC users will need to use a windows emulator to update. A little pricey but considering that it's cheaper than the high end Roomba with the same or better features it's actually well priced. Has difficulty seeing thin black and silver legs of things. I have noticed quite a few people moaning about needing to pick up cords and other things on the floor so the Neato doesn't get tangled up. The Neato is not a robot that will pick up all of your stuff off the floor. Just as you'd do prior to manually vacuuming your own home the Neato does it's job best if you pick up some of the stuff you've left on the ground and tuck away the loose cords and rug fringe. The bottom line, this is a great little machine and any reservations about it being a new company with a new device should be soothed by the fact that Neato's customer service is so great. The Neato is a game changer when it comes to robotic vacuums and I'm really looking forward to them doing their own version of the Scooba. This bundle is a great value as well, the Neato plus 2 years worth of accessories for the same price or cheaper than the Neato itself is a no brainer.
