Product Description

Sponge filters provide both mechanical and biological filtration. Simply install an airline into the unit and provide both aeration and filtration for your fish. Aerobic bacteria colonize the sponge providing a bacterial substance to facilitate the nitrogen cycle. In addition, the sponge traps larger waste particles mechanically cleaning the water without trapping baby fish. They are useful for as breeding filter or as secondary filter. Or they can be used as pre-filtration unit by fitting to an external or a top filter.

I decided to look into buying a sponge filter for my 5 gallon tank after my HoB filter just quit working after we moved the tank. I had seen that these types of filters were good for fish with long, flow-y fins so I figured it would be perfect for my halfmoon betta. I went about fixing it into the tank and boy am I impressed. It had only been in there for 5 minutes attached to an air pump made for tanks up to 20 gallons, and the water had gone from a dingy cloud to near crystal clear! There's a little outflow tube at the top that spits out the water pretty fast, so I would be aware of that if you have fish that aren't too happy about fast flowing water. My betta is a goofball and likes to purposefully ride in the outflow.
Keep in mind that in order for this product to work, you need an air pump! To attach it to the pump, use regular airline tubing made for aquariums. Also, be sure to order a check valve as well to prevent water from shooting back up into the air pump in case there's ever a power outage.

Hey folks! I recommend these to anyone looking for a filter for tanks up to 40 gallons. I always use one filter per 10 gallons, so I have two of these in my twenty, though you could probably get away with just one if you stocked it properly. I can't tell you how great these are from fry, shrimp & betta fish. They can be used with any type of fish. To fully set this filter up, you'd need the following:
- the filter itself
-an air pump for the size of the tank you have
-airline or tubing long enough to reach from the filter to the air pump loosely
-check valve (some air pumps come with check valves)
-an outlet to plug the air pump into
-a flow adjuster valve (optional)

They're only as loud as the air pump you purchase. These are so simple, yet they do so much for you! You'll see many folks buying air stones to produce bubbles. This filter uses the air to create a suction where it pulls the water in through the sponges & then spits it out of the top of the tube in the middle along with the air. This creates bubbles & a current. You can turn the tube so that the current is going to either side or out in front, which I really like. If you feel the current is too strong, just add a flow adjuster valve next to your check valve. Many HOB filters don't filter as well as you'd think. A lot of the water coming out of those filters has just run over top of the filter media. Everything filtered through the sponges must go through the sponges.

A definite perk to having these dual biochemical sponge filters in cycled & established tanks, is that you can jump start the cycling process of a new aquarium set up! The sponges will hold beneficial bacteria, & you can switch one of the new sponges out with one from an established tank's sponge.

Works good on my 10 gallon red cherry shrimp Walstad tank.

No noticeable change in water clarity (which I don't really expect), but the shrimp are settling on the sponge, which means it's doing its job as a biological filter.

If you want something user friendly, cheap, and no floss this is it. Easy to manage and easy to clean. Plus it provides excellent oxygen levels for the tank. I use this is a 6 gallon apple snail tank and I don't have to worry about snails getting sucked up into a filter anymore. I recommend this for tanks over 10 gallons though since it is a good size.
