Product Description

Biochemical Sponge Filter provides both mechanical and biological filtration. Simply install an airline into the unit and provide both aeration and filtration for your fish. Aerobic bacteria colonize the sponge providing a bacterial substrate to facilitate the nitrogen cycle. In addition, the 4 1/2 Inch Sponge Filter traps waste particles mechanically cleaning the water without trapping the baby fish. The Fish Tank Sponge Filter featuring a weighted plastic base that keeps the unit from floating during use, and cylinder design to eliminate dead space between the filter. Lift tube allows the use of power head without adapter, increasing its versatility.

For the price, it is hard to complain. It is solidly built. It has enough weight to stay in place. yes it is large, but I like that about it. I bought a couple of these. I have used them in 10-55 gal tanks. In the smaller tank they are used with my fry so they have a place to hid and so they don't get sucked into the filter. I would have given 5 stars if the was a way to add an airstone to better aerate the bubbles. If you have a small tank and no top you may get some water mist splashing out. If you have a lid no problems. I'll buy again. Don't clean under tap water though. Nothing that will harm the filter, but the chlorinated water will kill the helpful bacteria that form in the sponge media. Clean the filter out in a bucket of tank water when you do a water change.

We have a 37 gallon that has many tetras and a few livebearers, as well as a small pod of cory cats. The backfilter we purchased was different than our normal brand and we have not been happy. However, we have not purchased the new one yet and wanted something to really increase the filtration in the tank. We were reviewing old video we had transferred to DVD and we saw our 125 Gallon fish tank. It was gorgeous, full to capacity, and filtered by filters JUST LIKE THESE. So we got this one.

This has a weighted base and has so far stayed down completely. The airhose was easy to attach to the top.

We noticed a difference in the water quality right away. We got some nice new plants to cover the filter and you would never even know it was there.

I will report back in a month or two if there are any problems. But this has been working very well so far.

I run 3 in a 64 gallon. tank. I rinse the sponges in aquarium water every two months and that's it.

I had one of these running in my sump for a couple months. When it was time to set up a nursery tank for the fry, I just moved the sponge to the new tank, and the tank was instantly cycled. They're also great with battery operated air pumps during power outages.

These sponge filters are functional, but they are not as good as other sponge filters I have used in the past. They leave more residue than previous filters I have used, I find I have to turn up the pumps with these and to clean them about twice as frequently as others I have used. However, that being said, they do work: my water is tolerably clean, I have no algae and my animals are healthy.

Likes:
Functional
-clean water
-healthy pets

Dislikes:
Not as efficient as other sponge filters

Bottom Line:
For top efficiency in a sponge filter (if this is, of course, the type of filer you want; other filter options are always on the table) I would probably choose a different brand.

The price was right and still working great, it is easy to clean and I would buy again. The only issue is not sure how you would put an airstone on this product to make smaller bubbles for less agitation, but I can work with it.

The filter works fine and keeps my fishbowl water nice and clear. The only problem I have had with it is that when you put it into your tank it expands to about twice the stated size and therefore takes up a lot
of room in my small tank. It works great though so I do recommend it.

I ordered this and received it timely but I did not receive the plastic tube that is both pictured and listed in the last line of the product description. The sponge filter would work fine if all the pieces were intact.
