My cousin has this same knife set that he got years back.
I bought a knife set for myself recently and I find that the quality is less than that of the older makes.
The handles feel cheap and the box is not as fine as the older one.
Still an overall good knife set.

I used to have one of these knife sets years ago but lost it in a move. It was made with pride in the USA. Beautiful craftsmanship. The item I got now is a sad, made in China (ofcourse) piece of garbage. The box is made if some unidentifable sort of plastic made to look somewhat like of wood. The hinge pin is way too small allowing lots of slop in the lid as though the hinge screws were loose. The lock ring is so rough it is very difficule to secure the blades. This was addressed at the factory by applying light oil to the threads. That cure didn't work. The plastic inserts that hold the pieces are a joke. Distorted out of shape gripping the tools way too tightly. The only good thing I can say is the blades are sharp. Come on Elmer's, you can do better. I would gladly pay twice the price for the original quality,

This is a good set, with nice quality cutting edges, but was a little disappointed with the box (MDF with a veneer rather than what appears to be a solid wood box in the pictures as of 4/29).

The other thing that really surprised me was the poor finish to the non-cutting portion of the blade. Many of mine have chips or worn indentations (possibly from finishing the actual blades?) and what appears to be a bad finish on the 'backs' of the blades. Putting your finger gently on this to help guide a cut really makes it seem like you're knicking your finger on solid sandpaper. I improved it somewhat by grinding the backs a little with a file, but definitely surprised about the lack of quality finish from a name like X-Acto.

Still, it does the job of cutting well and the box does hold everything together, although I think the fragile plastic inserts will be useless before too long. In the top of the box the spare blades are held in place by a magnetic strip, and I anticipate pulling this from the insert and gluing it directly to the inside to of the box.

(PS - don't forget to give the blades a good clean before using them. There was a substantial oil/sheen on mine that would have marked e.g. a paper project)

It cuts paper just ok, but I tried foam board about 1/10" thick and it did very bad job. I used to cut foam board like this before with regular Office Depo paper knife. Disappointed.

This basic knife set is ok, the blades are sharp but they keep comming loose from the handles, i guess this is what you canexpect from an inexpensive set of knifes.

These come in a really nice-looking wooden box! I love all the various blades this set has and also, they've really helped me out during my first year of art school. What I didn't like was the fact that the blade attachments were stored on the top half of the box, the lid. Some of them never failed to fall out and hide themselves at the slightest provocation. To remedy this super annoyance, I decided to switch the top and bottom holders and super-glue them to the box. It's all good now. I'd say if you want to get these, go ahead and get them! Also, if you can make a special, better place for storage of the blades, even better.

I got these mostly for cutting leather projects because I liked a set that my mom had like this--only hers was 40 years old. These seem to have the same good quality and work great for what I've needed them for so far.

I purchased this set becuase I work a lot with plastic hobby models, and lately I been increasing the use of plastic cutted to specific forms, I used another knife and it snaped in two with the exacto the blade quality is top not so I dont requiere that much force. exellent purchase.

I received this item today and i was surprised by the finishing and the quality, the wood box is very compact and well organized as it appears on the pictures, and i recommend it to anyone who love to own a splendid set.

This is a great gift for a crafter or someone who does their own matting and framing. It's small and neat and tidy in it's little wooden storage box, and the blades look plenty sharp. A good price for the product.
