Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

The second volume of Yolen's fantasy anthology series preserves the high quality and range of the first without being repetitive. The 26 stories and poems here run the gamut from Vivian Vande Velde's "Just Another Dragon-Slaying," with its twist on a fantasy cliche, to Tappan King's lighthearted, somewhat autobiographical "A Most Obedient Cat" and the excellent feminist ghost story, "Young Woman in a Garden" by Delia Sherman. Martha Soukup's "The Spinner" weaves echoes of myth and fairy tale into a story of spurned love, while Richard Kearns's "Raven" is a fable worthy of Kipling. The occasional poems seem to have been included more for their fantasy imagery than their subjects. Yolen ( Briar Rose ) demonstrates that a wealth of fine reading is embraced by the fantasy category; her series is a prime source of good short fiction in the field.

From School Library Journal

YA?This collection of stories has bite, sarcastic wit, and a slightly bitter edge. It's just what fantasy needs. Spicing up the mixture are Vivian Vande Velde's "Just Another Dragon Slaying," a toothsome little tale about the realities of killing those pesky beasts; Barbara Hambly's take on "The Little Tailor and the Elves," in which a much-abused wife triumphs with a little help from her friends; Tappan King's delightful "A Most Obedient Cat" is immediately recognizable to any feline-lover whose own darling has ever brought home a treasure (it makes you appreciate how mundane those encounters truly are); and last, but certainly not least, Will Shetterly's "Oldthings," a sourball candy of a cautionary tale. The other selections have a similar tone; not gentle, poetic, or even heroic, instead they feature the world turned inside out and upside down with a vaguely cynical air. It's an acquired taste, but those who have it will find this a tasty treat.?Cathy Chauvette, Fairfax County Public Library
