5.0 out of 5 stars Xandros 2.0 and Kissing Windows Goodbye

Forget about this! It is so old that it will not have any drivers for any of your hardware and even then, back in 2003 it was one of the least favorite Linux distros.

Easy to add applications that did not come with it. It plays my audio cd's, dvd's, mp3's. I can surf the Internet and answer e-mails. I can customize the desktop. I can add skin's to applications that will allow. It knows when I plug in my camera, or external USB hard drive. If an application hangs, I can press Ctrl+Alt+Del keys and then kill the process that is hanging. But this is very rare for Linux applications. But then I can run certain MS Windows applications and this does happen to them. But no reboot of Xandors. It is not perfect, but it works for my needs.

Kissing Windows Goodbye

I have used Linux Xandros 1.0 for over a year now. Xandros always starts up and shutdown, not like hanging sometimes ME. It is solid and stable to use every day. I have made user accounts for myself and son. Xandros has a switch user facility which comes in handy, I can allow my son to log on and my session keeps working in the background. He can check his email and browse the Internet, then he logs out. And I switch back to my session. We each have our own settings and desktop. Plus our own software.

I could go on and on, but will write more when I get version 2 installed. I give the product five stars and technical support the same.

I have used this O/S since March of '04. It is hands down the best alternative to Windows around and the easiest I have found to install of the Linux versions. I have not run anything but some version of Linux for the last 2 years. If you have to run some Windows applications look into Crossover Office. Check the Xandros web site.

5.0 out of 5 stars Xandros 2.01, August 12, 2004

The cost of this OS is awesome. I like the OS better than
Lindows/Linspire because there are fewer strings attached.
Sure I have a lot of experience with Unix operating systems
and Linux, so I like that I can get a text log via "console"
but I mostly browse. I was thinking of using this desktop
on my firewall (something Linux is good for/at) but we'll
have to see.

Agree with all John A Debay said.
But wait !8^), I don't even have the Deluxe Desktop which John
has. I have the standard distribution. [John, do you have
Crossover which is also offered?] (...)
OK, you may have to subscribe for money. Anyway, Jerry is
impressed and Jerry doesn't impress easily and he always
tells it like it is.

In addition, my younger daughter can play all the games
on neopets.com through the web browser (Opera) supplied
with Xandros and that's what she cares about the most.

As for me, I may get Crossover so I can test Microsoft
Office on Xandros.
