4.0 out of 5 stars Great temporary and portable solution, December 20, 2006

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Xbox 360 64MB Memory Unit (Video Game)
I recently purchased an Xbox 360 Core system and needed a memory unit to save my games as the Core system does not come with any memory saving hardware. I decided to purchase this memory unit because of the lower price compared to the hard drive. The unit is stated to hold 64MB worth of storage (in reality the card offers a bit less than the stated 64MB, but it is fine because this is normal).

The Xbox 360 64MB Memory Unit comes with a plastic keychain snap case, a folded instructions/warning sheet, and about a dozen glossy-white label stickers. The unit goes along well with any Xbox 360 system as the color and texture quality matches that of the Xbox 360 systems (particularly that of the original faceplates).

The unit is capable of saving a great deal of games. A massive game such as Oblivion may have a save file size of up to 1MB; using the 64MB memory unit, there will be a lot of remaining storage space for other games.

To connect to Xbox Live or Xbox Live Marketplace, any user with a 360 will need a memory unit or the detachable hard drive to setup a gamer profile. Once a gamer profile is setup, any user can connect to the Xbox Live Marketplace for downloadable content. When the Xbox 360 system is connected to Xbox Live, any updates available for the Xbox 360 system can be downloaded and applied immediately. As I recall, the system updates did not take up a lot of space (I believe they were less than 1MB).

Once connected to Xbox Live Marketplace, users can download a variety of content from movie trailers to game demos. Unfortunately due to the small amount of storage space available on the memory unit, users are limited to downloads based on file size. Xbox 360 game demos average around 700MB and HD content are often more than 100MB, making it impossible to download and view/run any type of demo or HD content with a 64MB memory unit. However, any of the non-HD, 480p content and short clips are downloadable as they require less storage space.

This memory unit is great for those who need a quick fix or require no more than bare minimal support for playing their Xbox 360 games. In the long-run I highly recommend users to skip this product and suggest the purchase of the detachable hard drive instead. The hard drive, as often cheered in the reviews, will offer a lot more function and flexibility for any Xbox 360 Core owner. For example, with a hard drive, users have the ability to play original Xbox titles, the capability of downloading larger file content such as game demos, HD movies and trailers, customizable content, and much more. So depending on which product will serve you best, you decide.

5.0 out of 5 stars Must have for every XBox 360, November 25, 2005
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Xbox 360 64MB Memory Unit (Video Game)
The XBox 360 Memory Unit holds 64mb of memory in a small white unit, probably 2" x 1.5" x .5". This compares to the hard drive that holds 20 gig. This memory unit is meant to be portable - and luckily for gamers, this little memory is WIDELY available so even if you can't find a hard drive for your machine, you should be able to easily find a memory unit.

The nice portability means you can bring the unit along to friends houses to play games that you've partially finished. The unit comes with a solid plastic full-surround case that is relatively sturdy. The case even has a hole cut in one corner, so that you could lock it shut or tie it to your backpack. Of course if someone REALLY wanted to get into the case to steal your memory card, it's not that hard to cut through it with a sharp knife. Still, this should at least deter the casual thief.

The cost for the memory unit is currently $39.99. The memory unit does NOT come with the XBox 360 console so you really need one if not two of them, depending on how much you like to game. In our house we usually like to have at least one memory unit per gamer. That way there aren't any arguments about "You overwrote my game file that I was working on for 1000 hours!!!" It can just take one slip of the finger to lead to sure disaster in the gaming world.

Highly recommended for every XBox 360 owner!

5.0 out of 5 stars You'll need this with CORE, December 2, 2005

This review is from: Xbox 360 64MB Memory Unit (Video Game)
Microsoft's Core Xbox 360 system does not support the saving of games. You can play the games but all progress is lost. This little memory unit plugs into one of two slots on the front of the console. It only holds 64mb, but with progress in 4 games, I still have 40MB free. The games' box says how much memory is needed to save. Use this if you can't get/afford a hard drive or you want to take your saved games with you.

Pros:

-The flash memory is very reliable -- the chance of losing data is slim compared to the risks of a hard-drive.

-Its portable

-Allows you to save games

Cons:

-Small memory size

-Costly for the amount of storage space: 63c/mb vs 0.5c/mb with the hard drive
