5.0 out of 5 stars Xbox 360 coooling fan, February 1, 2010
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Xbox 360 Intercooler TS - black (Accessory)
Excellent product. I have purchased several different type of cooling fans and this is far superior to any other brand or type purchased. The fan only runs when needed and will shut off automatically shortly after you power down your console. I would highly recommend this product as preventative maintenance for your console, because the Xbox 360 does overheat and thus far Microsoft has done very little to correct the issue.

4.0 out of 5 stars CHEAP FIX FOR LOUD NOISE, April 3, 2010
By
= Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Xbox 360 Intercooler TS - black (Accessory)
I bought the white one and reviewed that but just adding this here for the black one for people who have had issues with the very loud fans. My original review:

So I bought this intercooler being very skeptical because of many complaints of the loud noise and because my previous experience with Nyko's original line of intercoolers nearly burned my house down because of poor design(leeching power from the Xbox360 console causing massive overheating/melting cords).

Anyways, to my surprise the design is actually quite good and the heat sensor works well enough, although you may have issues with the fan never turning off if your console is in a cabinet like mine(I had to cut out a vent directly where fan was blowing, fixed issue).

Now the problem is that the product is made in China and they just don't do a very good quality job by using parts that do not fit flush and not inserting any kind of insulation or such to dampen the noise from all the loose parts. The parts are not that loose, but these fans are actually quite strong and it seems to only have a full blast setting so all these tiny crevices are allowing a lot of rattling to occur inside the unit, also causing my xbox to shake which made me nervous.

For a simple cheap fix, I simply took a small screwdriver and opened the device(note: there are two longer screws in the middle so that should be remembered when reattaching the back plate). I originally wanted to put oil in the fans like a couple other people did but there is absolutely no way to do so without definitely voiding this device(even though you are technically voiding it by doing this but no one would know if you're careful^^).

After you remove the back plate, simply look around the device and stuff small folded up pieces of paper or something in between the spaces like where the fans are, also between the two outer layers of plastic(the case plastic). Obviously this doesn't look very good but you would be surprised by how much quieter the device is and how it doesn't shake the console anymore. It still makes more noise than a simple console fan should but this essentially dampened about 50% of the noise for me so now I can hardly hear it in my entertainment center which is all I wanted. Went from a noise level of a hand vacuum to maybe a loud laptap fan lol.

I strongly suggest this because of how much my console shook before until I put small(less than 1"x1") pieces of folded paper in it, obviously use common sense and dont stuff any around the wires and break the wires, don't impede the fans airflow, don't touch the circuit boards or overstuff the crevices so the unit gets warped. Hopefully this helps some people because I was about to return this insanely loud fan until I did this and it has worked very well now for the past week and doesn't seem to be any issues.

***NEW PROBLEM(unrelated to the fix above)***

Ok so a month and a half after I fixed my initial issues of the fan being outrageously loud(loose parts rattling), I am now having a new issue with this cooling fan. Nearly everytime I turn on my xbox now, once the fan kicks on after about 10 seconds...it begins making this insanely loud, very unnatural sound that is absolutely no doubt the fan hitting against something. I was almost sure it was the paper I put in before but I am almost positive that isn't the case. I tried testing the fan while it was still on the xbox but turned around and noticed the fans push forward when they kick on. While this probably won't mean much to most people, my fan was poorly put together and the plastic fan well wasn't properly aligned. For some odd reason this is only affecting one fan and is only sticking out in one of the fan wells. I tried scraping it down with a razor blade but I still get that very loud sound of the fan hitting the plastic walls. Strangely enough there is a very simple fix for this also(at least in my case). Once the noise begins it simply will not stop until you pull the power out. I did this from the back of the xbox where the fan is attached to the xbox. You have to pull it out fully for a second or two or else the noise will immediately resume but I just plug mine back in after a couple seconds. The fan works absolutely fine for any amount of time and the problem never returns until I try turning my xbox on again after leaving it off for a few hours. It's pretty annoying but the fan really does work absolutely fine and there's no rattling because of the paper. Still very odd and I wish someone would finally come out with a quality cooling fan!
