Xbox 360 coooling fan,
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Xbox 360 Intercooler TS - black (Accessory)
Excellent product. I have purchased several different type of cooling fans and this is far superior to any other brand or type purchased. The fan only runs when needed and will shut off automatically shortly after you power down your console. I would highly recommend this product as preventative maintenance for your console, because the Xbox 360 does overheat and thus far Microsoft has done very little to correct the issue.

CHEAP FIX FOR LOUD NOISE,
By Terry (NH, USA) - See all my reviews

This review is from: Xbox 360 Intercooler TS - black (Accessory)
I bought the white one and reviewed that but just adding this here for the black one for people who have had issues with the very loud fans. My original review:
So I bought this intercooler being very skeptical because of many complaints of the loud noise and because my previous experience with Nyko's original line of intercoolers nearly burned my house down because of poor design(leeching power from the Xbox360 console causing massive overheating/melting cords). Anyways, to my surprise the design is actually quite good and the heat sensor works well enough, although you may have issues with the fan never turning off if your console is in a cabinet like mine(I had to cut out a vent directly where fan was blowing, fixed issue). Now the problem is that the product is made in China and they just don't do a very good quality job by using parts that do not fit flush and not inserting any kind of insulation or such to dampen the noise from all the loose parts. The parts are not that loose, but these fans are actually quite strong and it seems to only have a full blast setting so all these tiny crevices are allowing a lot of rattling to occur inside the unit, also causing my xbox to shake which made me nervous. For a simple cheap fix, I simply took a small screwdriver and opened the device(note: there are two longer screws in the middle so that should be remembered when reattaching the back plate). I originally wanted to put oil in the fans like a couple other people did but there is absolutely no way to do so without definitely voiding this device(even though you are technically voiding it by doing this but no one would know if you're careful^^). After you remove the back plate, simply look around the device and stuff small folded up pieces of paper or something in between the spaces like where the fans are, also between the two outer layers of plastic(the case plastic). Obviously this doesn't look very good but you would be surprised by how much quieter the device is and how it doesn't shake the console anymore. It still makes more noise than a simple console fan should but this essentially dampened about 50% of the noise for me so now I can hardly hear it in my entertainment center which is all I wanted. Went from a noise level of a hand vacuum to maybe a loud laptap fan lol. I strongly suggest this because of how much my console shook before until I put small(less than 1"x1") pieces of folded paper in it, obviously use common sense and dont stuff any around the wires and break the wires, don't impede the fans airflow, don't touch the circuit boards or overstuff the crevices so the unit gets warped. Hopefully this helps some people because I was about to return this insanely loud fan until I did this and it has worked very well now for the past week and doesn't seem to be any issues. ***NEW PROBLEM(unrelated to the fix above)*** Ok so a month and a half after I fixed my initial issues of the fan being outrageously loud(loose parts rattling), I am now having a new issue with this cooling fan. Nearly everytime I turn on my xbox now, once the fan kicks on after about 10 seconds...it begins making this insanely loud, very unnatural sound that is absolutely no doubt the fan hitting against something. I was almost sure it was the paper I put in before but I am almost positive that isn't the case. I tried testing the fan while it was still on the xbox but turned around and noticed the fans push forward when they kick on. While this probably won't mean much to most people, my fan was poorly put together and the plastic fan well wasn't properly aligned. For some odd reason this is only affecting one fan and is only sticking out in one of the fan wells. I tried scraping it down with a razor blade but I still get that very loud sound of the fan hitting the plastic walls. Strangely enough there is a very simple fix for this also(at least in my case). Once the noise begins it simply will not stop until you pull the power out. I did this from the back of the xbox where the fan is attached to the xbox. You have to pull it out fully for a second or two or else the noise will immediately resume but I just plug mine back in after a couple seconds. The fan works absolutely fine for any amount of time and the problem never returns until I try turning my xbox on again after leaving it off for a few hours. It's pretty annoying but the fan really does work absolutely fine and there's no rattling because of the paper. Still very odd and I wish someone would finally come out with a quality cooling fan!

After about the second week it started to make a humming noise whenever it turned itself on, otherwise I really like the fact that it is not always running and seems to be working fine.

Love this product. I like the fact that it turns on only when it senses that my XBOX 360 is too hot. I also like the fact that this comes in black so that it matches my black color XBOX.

This cooling fan is loud as many other owners have stated it to be; however, it gets the job done. I just received mines today, and already I see immediate results. I play a lot of Left 4 Dead 2, Gears of War 2, and Mass Effect 2---these games alone require long lengths at the controller, and sometimes you need to take a break for about an hour or two. Before whenever I left my system unattended I could count on it to be warmer than it should. One method that I suggest that everyone should do is to install your games directly to the hard drive, this will cut-down on the power needed to run the gaming disks, and keep the console cooler. This method works pretty/fairly well, but the console will still get warm, so now with the intercooler I'm expecting a much more cooler console than what I had before. I'm thinking of standing my console vertically, so I'm wondering if I added another fan that's advertised on here (a glow-stand vertical cooler) will that make the system even cooler than just with the intercooler itself? Something to think about. The concept of cooling fans really came from Amateur Radio Operators as "Ham-Rigs" get 10x hotter than the 360, so I'm also considering having my ham-buddy help me rig-up some more fans instead...will see if I can make my own vertical fans...good way to save the dough! Anyways, I highly recommend this product to anyone seeking to push the 360 console pass it's 3-Ring-of-Death Lifespan.

Warning! Intercooler TS Design Flaw,
By tomcat9 (USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Xbox 360 Intercooler TS - black (Accessory)
Try this on your Xbox 360 with the Intercooler TS. With an Xbox 360 that has been running for about five minutes, turn off the Xbox and wait for the TS fans to shut off. As soon as the TS fans shut off, turn on the Xbox 360. I can almost guarantee that the TS fans will never restart or at least take an extremely long time to do so. This is the Intercooler TS' fatal flaw.
The reason this happens is because there is a reference sensor hidden within the case whose reading the TS compares to that of the primary (and visible) sensor that senses the air flowing out the Xbox. The problem is the Intercooler case also heats up from the warm air coming off the Xbox, which in turn heats up the reference sensor within. Well, guess what? Under certain conditions like the one mentioned in the previous paragraph, the TS will read from its primary sensor a lower temperature than the reference sensor. The TS then "thinks" the Xbox is cooler than the surrounding air. Therefore, the TS fans will never start, even as your Xbox gets hotter. The TS' design flaw causes heat buildup that can shorten the life of not only your Xbox 360 but the TS itself as well. Please be warned.

Definitely works! Where my 360 sits, it always had an overheating issue. I got this for Christmas and now I don't have a problem at all! Only runs when needed so it saves the energy! Love it!

I bought two of these for presents last Christmas. Here we are, 7 months later, one works and the other is dead. On the bright side, I'm sure they kept the xbox's cool, but it's irritating to have to replace one within a year.

I don't understand people saying that this intercooler takes about 2 hours to kick on. Within 2 minutes of my Xbox turning on the intercooler TS turned on automatically. And my xbox was turned off for 10 hours so it wasn't hot to start with. After about 10 hours with my xbox on I turned it off. The intercooler turned off about 5 minutes later.
Some people may find the intercooler loud but you really can't hear it over the sounds of the TV. All in All I wish I had gotten this for my old xbox that overheated and got the RROD. A++++ |
