Significantly Quieter and Smaller than the Intercooler EX,

Unit is VERY noticeably quieter and smaller than the Intercooler Ex. Auto on/off function is great, that way the 360 starts up quiet and as you play games turns on as needed. Great improvement over the EX.
EDIT: After using this for the last week I wish I could take the review up another star. The TS is actually keeping the entire 360 cool to the touch, even the games are now coming out at room temp instead of on fire. And like I said before, the sound is WAYYY less than the EX, not a whole lot louder than a computer. EDIT: Pushing 5 months and absolutely no problem with my 360...gets used daily and is working like a charm :)

Everything is better in pairs,

The Nyko intercooler TS is the long awaited cooler to finally put rest to the problems of the past (draining power from the console), but it falls short of delivering the ultimate solution. For people in warm to hot climates (Caribbean) like me, the problem of the Xbox 360 overheating is very serious, as i can testify that my first one went the way of the RROD, even with a fan next to it.
Nyko's new product does works as advertised, it gets some hot air out, but to my surprise it does have a mixed effect on the console performance. While playing Gears of War i noticed that the intercooler caused some noticeable lag that was not present before. In my opinion it is because the fans are under powered (low RPM) and to that you add that the intercooler blocks the original fans exhaust, resulting in a half way solution, or increased problems. What i am doing now is a combination of two imperfect products: The Intec Cooling Station(a cool base with a fan) + the nyko intercooler TS = the results are great, the game disc comes out at room temperature, and the console performs as good as ever (note that there is no air conditioning in the room). My recommendation is that if overheating is a serious trouble for you, dont rely in just one product to solve it. *****Edit Dec 6 2008****** Almost a month later the intercooler is working great. excellent purchase for any xbox 360 player ***2nd Edit Feb 3 2009**** As stated in the first two paragraph, the intercooler performs as advertised, but beware. IF you plan to use your 360 in the HORIZONTAL position, this product might not be enough. Given to the limited space inside the console, the motherboard and all computing components are sitting below the DVD drive. In the horizontal position the heat is not dissipated and therefore it stays concentrated between the 360 and the tv table, very problematic scenario. My solution was to get one of those laptop cooling fans and use it for the 360. Its compact enough and it looks decent. Just remember that the 360 is n known to have heat issues, take the necessary measures to prolong the life of your console.

I have had this product for three days so far as it says in the product summary it has a temperature control. Since it has a external ac adapter you do not have to worry anymore of the product ruining your Xbox anymore. i found that what it advertised is true. It doesn't turn off when you turn off your console if the console is still hot. I found this a very nifty feature. I think it is worth it for the old and new consoles since we know The RROD mostly happens when the console overheats i would say this product those its job.

A Must Have....,

First off, I have had my Xbox 360 for over 2 years now. I like many went through the RROD (Red Ring of Death) scenario (not once, not twice but 3 times). Once I got a working version, I had a helpful Best Buy employee advise me at the time to get an Intercooler for the 360. Thankfully the version I got was not the original one that melted around the plug-in. My version was the EX (the version with the metal insert). I have had to go through 2 of them in the time I have owned my 360 but let me assure you my console gets a lot of play. That being said, after my 2nd one went out recently I went to Amazon to see about purchasing a replacement. To my surprise I happened upon the Intercooler TS. Here is what I have discovered.
First off, if you have owned an Intercooler by Nyko, you will instantly see the difference. First off it is much smaller. Compared to the older versions it is about 1/4th smaller. It is still easy to install but took a little bit more shifting to put it into the holes compared to previous models. Secondly, it is clear, allowing you to see any dust or debris that might have gotten into the fans (and believe me it does). Another thing is, to me it is a bit quieter. It's not very evident but you can tell the diffence. One more vital change is that the Intercooler is now Temperature sensitive. What this means is that rather than running the whole time your 360 is on, the Intercooler lays dormant until your system heats up. Once it does, the fans kick on and proceed to cooling down your system. Lastly, and the most important change, is it comes with its own adapter. THANK YOU NYKO. You finally heard the cries of the many Intercooler owners. Up until this point the Intercooler had run on the power of the 360's power cord. This would not only cause it to heat on the connection but rob the 360 of precious processing power. This also allows the Intercool to continue to cool down the machine long after the power is turned off the 360. I found myself shocked by this one day when I heard the Intercooler kick on about 30 - 45 mins after I had stopped playing. This was a pleasant and welcome surprise. In closing, if you own a 360 you MUST get this item. While I am not happy with the price increase from previous versions, I can understand the cost coverage of the adapter as a possible reason. With the cooling effect this has on the 360, this is a necessity if you want to keep your 360 running for as long as you can. Pros: - Added Adapter (No longer runs on the power of the 360) - Efficient Cooling (System is much cooler with) - Temperature Sensitive (Kicks on when needed not before) - Small / Light / Easy to Install Cons: - Increased Price - Little Tricker to Install

I had already bought a cooler for my XBOX 360 when I first got after hearing about problems of it overheating and getting the RROD, but the cooler was so loud that not only did you have to increase the t.v. volume about 50% more but it sounded like you had a lawnmower in the back of the console after two months of the coolers use. My friend had bought this upgraded version and at first I was doubtful but after seeing how well it still functioned after five months I was convinced and got one myself. The biggest plus of this newer version in unlike the earlier one the console power adapter doesn't hook up though the cooler slot attachment which lead to poor power connection sometimes and actually causing temporary RROD until you replugged the power adapter cord, this cooler comes with its own ac adapter and doesn't block the consoles power slot which is actually a good thing as well since the cooler fan isn't taking power from the console either. The silence of the fan while on was incredible too after hearing that atrocious noise for so long I actually checked to see if the cooler fans were on which they were but it was so silent I had to make sure it was working after expecting to hear some loud noises from the cooler fans. So for hardcore games who play for long hours or just the casual gamer making sure that their console last a longtime here's a great addition for their system and at a very reasonable price too...
UPDATE 01-12-2011 Sadly what I first thought was a better updated version of the Nyko cooler fans turned out to be like most of the others, after about a month into using my Xbox 360 the fans from the cooler started grinding and making as much noise if not worse than the previous one I had. Though the noise did lower when the cooling fans were in use after five or so minutes and all you heard was a constant low mechanized hum but not as loud as when the fans first turn on. So far I bought another cooler but that one turned out to be no good, meaning its fans weren't rotating well enough to cool down the Xbox 360 like the Nyko Cooler fan was so until there is a much better solution I'll still be using this one I'll just have to learn to ignore the noise the cooler puts out for now..

I've always had problems with my 360 overheating, and I'd spend so much time worrying about the RROD from heating issues that I was afraid to play it sometimes. Once I got the Intercooler that changed. This fan is very easy to attach to the back of your 360 and it even runs off an AC adapter-therefore it doesn't take any power from your 360. What else is that it's temprature senstive. Once the internal temp of your 360 is warmer than the external temp, the device kicks in and keeps your 360 at just about room temp. It even stays on after you turn it off in order to bring the temp back down to normal.
It's amazing the difference I've noticed after I hooked up my Intercooler. My 360 is running so much smoother-and it's completly stopped lagging! It used to lag so much due to overheating. There's nothing bad about the Intercooler except for one thing. IT IS LOUD. But once you start playing a game-it's pretty easy to tone the sound out. It isn't much louder than the 360 itself. Think about it. A slightly louder 360 in exchange for longer console life! (Well, from overheating issues that is.) I'd reccomend the Intercooler to anyone who has overheating issues, or just wants to prolong the life of their 360!

This thing does exactly what it says it does. When your Xbox gets hot it turns on when it cools down it turns off, siple as that! It does a good job of moving air through the unit and can significantly reduce the temperature. I was told that nyko's coolers were garbage worthy but this unit has worked very well for me. I have many friends who have gotten red rings many times, so it is definitely a problem. To be safe you should probably get yourself one of these to keep it cool.

I bought this because, like most reviewers of this item, I live in constant fear of the Red Rings of Death. I got them once and it was about as much fun as a hangover. Anyway, I got this fan because I log in some long COD:MW2 hours and I wanted to make sure that I was keeping my console cool.
I gave this item 3 stars because it does seem to be working, but it has become really loud. When I first fire up the Xbox, the fan makes an unhealthy grinding noise, but then starts whirling and cooling correctly. From reading other reviews of the item on this page, it appears this is just par for the course. If you are a buyer just starting to look for a new fan, I would look elsewhere. There has to be a better functioning fan on the market. If you want a relatively cheap, somewhat unreliable fan - this one could be worse.

Poor quality assurance and short lifespan,

I've owned this little unit (white) for one year, and, as others have reported, the noise level is significant. If you use your XBox360 for streaming movies, then you will probably be disappointed like my wife and and have been with the extra fan noise. In spite of the increased airflow through the game console, our XBox360 still suffered a second red-ring-of-death (RROD) in its first 2.5 years of life. To top all of that off, this Nyko Intercooler TS unit has died an early death at one-year-old. The fans are fine. It turns out that something in the circuitry has failed permanently, and I am not convinced that the purchase of another one of these units is worth the additional (albeit small) expense.

I purchased this for my son's Xbox in hopes of preventing yet another RRoD. It snapped right on and very quickly started evacuating hot air from the depths of the Xbox. You can put you hand in from of it and feel the warm air being extracted. The Xbox itself is significantly cooler to the touch and disks are no longer hot when removed after being used for a while.
In short, this things is well worth the investment and Microsoft should incorporate something like this into future models. Be advised that the fans can be a bit noisy when the thermal sensor turns them to max. But hey, that's my kids problem... |
