1.0 out of 5 stars Warning: Does not work with new system update
Microsoft has announced that the new system update, scheduled to go live in November 2009, will disable all unauthorized memory units. This will be completely useless then, and even worse, any save data or profiles copied to it will be totally inaccessible. Microsoft's memory prices for the 360 are completely ludicrous, but unfortunately, now there's no other option.

If you plan or have the October 2009 Dashboard Update, don't buy this product because it no longer works. Microsoft has disabled its use supposed to keep out hackers and cheaters. Too bad for the rest of us that just wanted bigger and cheaper storage options.

I have one and loved it until it stopped working without warning. I will read the blogs next time before updating my xbox.

I just learned of this news today. I wondered why my games stopped prompting me to choose a storage device, as it always did prior to the update. This really sucks!

First thing I thought of is that it would probably only take a firmware update from Datel to remedy this. It seems they are currently working on an update. Screw you Microsoft! Make your accessories more comparable to these third party options and you wouldn't have this problem.

UPDATE 12-4-09

Datel Informed me to mail in my max memory card and they will mail it back to me when they fix this problem. They have been very responsive through email. they are aware of the problem and are working on a hardware fix. (Sorry, no user-end firmware fix, i asked them) I encourage you to contact Datel through email. they allowed me to send mine in to them without a receipt.

***UPDATE*** 6/22/11

Now with the xbox update that allows you to use a thumb drive, there is no need to use things like this. Who doesn't have a bunch of 2gig sticks laying around these days?

Of course I didnt read the reviews first or else I would have never purchased this product. I thought the first one I got yesterday was defective sent it back for replacement which I got today...still no go...through some googling found an article about this product and how its now useless. Not sure why Amazon is still selling this item. Definately gettin the refund and sending this back.

AMAZON you should remove ALL 3rd party memory units for the xbox 360 and save yourself and your customers a headache.

Don't use unauthorized Xbox 360 Storage Devices

When Preview Program members start receiving the Xbox 360 system update next week, one of the changes is that unauthorized Memory Units will no longer work with the Xbox 360. If you've moved your profile or saved games onto one to "back it up," you'd better move it back onto an authorized Xbox 360 storage device prior to taking the update. If you continue to use an unauthorized Memory Unit after the update, you will not be able to access your stored profile or saved games.

If you need help identifying officially licensed Xbox 360 storage devices or accessories you can read more about the licensed accessories program on [...]

So save your cash!!!

1.0 out of 5 stars Just avoid the potential headache and get a flash drive, January 9, 2010

Before the latest dashboard update, this was a great third-party memory card, offering four times the storage of the Microsoft card at the same price, and upgradeable to a whopping 16GB, 32 times more than the 512MB the Microsoft card touts. Its PC-end aspect was clunky at best, but offered a decent backup option.

However, the fall update to the Xbox 360 dashboard has locked out the memory card from being used. Although I have not contacted DAtel personally (as another reviewer has), they have posted a letter saying they are working on an updated card that will bypass the lockout, and current owners will be able to exchange this card for one of those. The letter reads in part:

"...Datel are aware of the changes that are required to remedy this problem and will shortly release a solution in readiness for this potential update. This will be made available to you and your retail / domestic customers shortly. In the meantime if you are holding any stock of this product you can, if you wish, return this to us and we will exchange / replace with new updated versions in readiness for the Microsoft Dashboard release.

These high capacity memory units were released in May 2009 and have continued to function well to date. These potential problems are entirely due to the actions of Microsoft and are beyond our control..."

Also, Datel launched a lawsuit around Thanksgiving against Microsoft claiming it is limiting consumer choice. If you search online you can find the filing fairly easily (unfortunately, the link will not translate correctly into an Amazon review, so I can't post it here).

As good a buy as this was at the time, avoid getting this memory card until there's a resolution to this mess.

EDIT 7/5/10: Datel has released versions of the card that work now, and users who still have their original receipt can send in their non-working units to Datel and get working units. However, since I last wrote the review Microsoft has added support for USB flash drives up to 16GB (maximum of two being used at once), so most people considering this item would be better served buying a flash drive instead. And since the 250GB hard drive has been released, prices have dropped significantly on the other HDDs, so for about $10 more than this card you can get a new 60GB HDD.

As of the new update, this memory unit no longer works with the XBOX 360 since it is an unauthorized product. Save yourself a headache and buy the official Memory Unit for now. It may be a pain in the rear to pay more but the MS ones are guaranteed to work.

Microsoft pulled support just before I bought this item.

Amazon gave me a full refund, but I imagine not for long in the future (unless the manufacturer can make a software update or something.) In the meantime, DO NOT BUY THIS!! Your X-box won't even recognize it!

in April 2010 Microsoft updated the xbox to allow USB storage media to work with the xbox 360 up to 16 gb. so any usb thumbdrive < 16 gb will work, and will be cheaper than this.
