Good product, but unfair price from MS,
This review is from: Xbox 360 Memory Unit 512MB (Video Game)
I purchased this memory card to move my profile and saved games from one Xbox 360 to a newer one, and it worked perfectly. The process of copying data from the hard drive to the memory card is simple and fast, and I may keep the card as a backup in case something happens to our new Xbox in the future.
4/5 stars, however, because I consider this product to be far overpriced for what it is. Since the Xbox 360 has standard USB ports, the only thing preventing you from using a standard USB drive (flash or hard drive) to backup your data is the built-in limitations of the Xbox itself. This feels unfair, as the only reason I can think for not allowing the use of USB drives for storage was to force people to buy overpriced memory cards and hard drives. This is just an inconvenience, and I can't complain too much since I did buy one. If you need a way to backup your save games, or if you are buying a newer machine and want to transfer your data, this is the best way to go, and I do recommend buying one for that purpose.

Vital for backing up profiles and important game saves. Very stable and much more convinient and portable than the harddrive.
Plus++ mine came with a free copy of Geometry Wars: Retro Evolved installed on it! It wasn't advertised as such on Amazon, but is was indicated on the packaging when i got it. The game is a tremendous amount of fun with a whole lot of replayability. Definitley a pleasant surprise!

Useful for backup and system switching.,

This is a great product and very easy to use. I game over at a friend's house alot and it was irritating having to recover my gamertag everytime. The process takes 20-30 min. With the MU you can put your profile on it and load it up instantly. Unfortunately it's way overpriced for a 512mb memory card. I was happy to find a copy of Worms on mine though which justifies a little bit of the price I suppose.
A lot of people seem to complain that you can't transfer all your saves onto it. I had the same problem with Eternal Sonata. Fortunately, there is an easy solution. Instead of trying to Copy/Move the files in the data management area on the console (which works for most games). Load your game. When you're in the game, save. When prompted to pick a location to save to, select the MU instead of the Hard Drive. I just loaded up my Eternal Sonata game, and went to the save point and chose the MU instead and it worked perfectly. I recommend this for anyone who spends time gaming on other's systems, as being able to take your tag with you and load it instantly on anyone's machine is a welcome respite from tag recovering. I gave it a 4 out of 5 because it does everything it's supposed to do, and does it well. Unfortunately though, the price is too high.

This larger MU is key for storing your profile and keeping difficult-to-replace game saves. Since the 360 dies quite often and needs to be replaced (by a very good warranty), this device removes the need to replace, for a example, an entire Forza2 garage.

This overpriced MS memory card is the only way to backup your game saves from your system's hard drive. Yet, it does a half job about it. It's not so much the memory card's fault but the overall Xbox 360's security features where many game saves (Dead of Alive 4, Forza 2, and many others) can not be copied or moved from the system's hard drive to the memory unit. Therefore, this card is nearly useless. However, Amazon does currently has a good price on it and it comes with Worms Xbox Live Arcade game preloaded, which cannot be copied/moved onto your 360's hard drive even though you own it. This type of security system is just so annoying and it was present in the original Xbox as well. Basically, you will have to replay many of your games over if your hard drive ever fails. 50-100 hrs of Forza 2 again? I don't think so. I might think about returning this item back to Amazon because it doesn't backup half of my game library saves.

Great for backing up profiles and important game saves. I bought this for my son so he had a backup when his game saves were accidently overwritten on the hard drive. Also, he has the portability to take his game saves over to a friend's house. Works great but pricey when compared to similar products.

I got this memory card (brand new) for $35 on Amazon with free shipping. You can't get a great deal like this ANYWHERE! This 512mb card usually runs around $50. My kid is very happy with it.

I would only recommend this product for people using it for the same purpose as I did. I use this in conjunction with Xbox 360 Xport 360 to copy my profile and a saved game or two off my hard drive. I only do this if the XBOX 360 I'm using doesn't have internet access and I want to use my gamertag for achievements. If the XBOX 360 does have internet, this is only good for making your saved games portable. This thing is good to have around in case you need it, but most of the time will sit in a box or on a shelf. If you are not trying to do anything I have mentioned, this is a complete waste of money to you. You would think with the advancement in technology, they would have larger sized memory units for much cheaper.
FYI, I get sent to the desert frequently for several months at a time. One deployment I was in Qatar, they had a video game room for people to play XBOX 360 and PS3. I had ordered a copy of Fallout 3 online and had it shipped to me. I created a gamer tag with the same name hoping that when I got home I could log into XBOX like and update my profile. I completed most of the achievements and when I came back home, I couldn't get the account to log in and update all my achievements. I wasn't about to invest all the hours I originally did to obtain the achievements. My second deployment I had the memory card with me along with my profile. I came back home and I was able to update my online profile.

I originally purchased this MU because I have multiple Xboxes and was tired of having to recover my profile every time I changed rooms. It was a poor product to begin with because of the 512MB limit and the restrictions that caused third-party MUs to not work. With the latest update to the Xbox dashboard it is an even worse option. You can now use USB thumb drives (limited to 16GB) instead of memory cards. This is a much better option for a few reasons:
1. At the 16GB limit, you have 32 times as much space to save data to. 2. You probably already have a thumb drive sitting around that is larger than 512MB. 3. If you don't have a large thumb drive around, they are much cheaper per MB than the proprietary card. 4. When schizophrenic MS decides to disable support for thumb drives (or enables external HDs), you will still have a thumb drive that is useful for other things. Skip this and use a thumb drive.

It made a simple process of moving everything over to my new larger hard drive on my second Xbox 360. The process was easy, but I wish it held more data. For the price, this small sized storage device should be larger. But that's Micro$oft for ya. What ya gonna do?
The product works for me. I just copied every saved game from one hard drive to the Memory Unit and then took it in the other room and moved the data from the memory unit to the new, larger hard drive on my second 360. It took hours and several trips to transfer my old 10GB hard drive. A slow, but easy process. Now, I have my non-Xbox Live gamer tags on the memory unit. Yes, when playing under those tags I will need the memory unit, but I can play my games in either room now without having to remove the hard drives. I simply take the memory unit and the game disc to the other machine. I do not play on Live. UPDATE Nov. 2010: You can now use a regular thumb drive. Microsoft did an update awhile back that makes it possible to use a thumb drive in the usb port as an external storage device instead of this overpriced, undersized proprietary thing. Although, I have yet to try the thumb drive thing yet. |
